I think if you ask around a bit you'll find that people are ardent supporters of various car companies. There are entire Ford families and Chevy families that won't even think of using something else. Add the legions of Honda, Saturn, and Toyota faithful and you really can extend the anology.
In this case, however, most people I know genuinely like Google and genuinely dislike MS. YMMV but to me that describes a barrier which MS must overcome before it can overtake Google.
Those are both very cool. My personal theory about the singularity is that progress, technological or otherwise, can only move forward so far before the pull of those left behind pulls it back. In essence, I think we are far more likely to enter the second "Dark Ages" than to jump into hyperspace. Not that I'm not pulling for the hyperspace option;-)
I know that we are becoming mroe dependent on the internet, but I can't help but think that if it dissappeared overnight we ought to some how manage to survive. I mean the human race developed civilizations what, 8,000 years ago? The masses have only been using the internet for a decade, the ubergeeks for two or three. If we are so dependent on it that its failure would lead to such wide spread damage than aren't we pretty much already screwed?
I would think that anything that has become irreplaceable to 8,000 years of progress after only 30 odd years is bound to doom us, regardless of its guise.
We all knew the federation was just a pale imitation of the galactic empire!
That's why Han Solo had to dump his load of Romulan Ale when the the Enterprise tractor beamed him, thereby causing Jabba the Hutt to lose his bet with bet with Harry Mudd;-)
Because, no matter how you cut it, freedom==responsibility. We, as a culture, are trying our utmost to avoid responsibility, be it at a government, corporate, or individual level.
My guess is that a lot of them have drunk the punch, so to to speak. They probably really do believe that all of those external sites extolling the virtues of freedom and democracy really are bad, and so they probably enjoy the challenge of blocking them. Intelligent and educated doesn't always imply open-minded and tolerant; it just ups the odds.
At the end of the day, scientists are people too. They have the same weaknesses and vices as the rest of us, and often times the concrete (a job) will override the nebulous (the integrity of science).
That would explain the new DVD my wife got, "Jane Fonda's Fragging to the Oldies."

And the Space tourism boon gets another boost.
Good luck with that. They have to first overcome the problem that people like Google and don't like MS.

I guess it depends on how you define Civilization. Maybe "thousands of years" would have been vague enough to be accurate;-)

I know. How would we read slashdot during lunch?
Why? Dunno. Just typing the date that popped into my noggin;-)

How about El Paso?

We all saw what happened to Pee-Wee. Aint't no way that's happening to me again.
C'mon dad its Episode 34, you know Darth Maul's Revenge Part II.

That's just what the 'net's noise to signal ratio needs: MetaBlogs.
That is all.
That is some trust you're putting into the average slashdot response;-)

That they're going to use BASH instead?

Just doesn't have the same ring to it. I bet it's a trap.
Yes, but you won't get the $10 mil until you debug it;-)
His son - George W. Bush
Now that's just hilarious. I certainly hope Matt Groenig reads this;-)
