I tried combining the Back function with an Up function. Every time I pressed the new Back-Up button, though, my computer would just start making beep beep noises.
One of my history teachers taught us that the Greeks used to have a phrase something along the lines of "Those whom the God's would destroy, they first make proud."
My own $0.02 is that M$'s hubris will eventually provide the catalyst for their decline and eventual demise.
Last week, Secret Service agents in New York arrested three men and seized 35,000 illegally copied music discs, 10,000 movies on DVD and 421 compact disc burners that are used to make the counterfeit products.
Seems like some of these are actions would be legitimate. The problem, of course, is where to draw the line. Personally, I think as soon as you start burning CD's for profit then you are pirating. Burning for your own use? That's when the overzealousness kicks in.
My own personal theoary as to why CD sales are down has to do with local bands. Your local garage band can now make tonnes of CD's of their music fairly cheaply, by-passing the usual media outlets. People buy the music they want from the concerts they go to, and the particular bands that interest them.
Until the record labels realize that, however, they are going to continue to bleed green.
the judge told jurors that in order to find the company guilty, they must agree that company representatives knew their actions were illegal and intended to violate the law. Merely offering a product that could violate copyrights was not enough to warrant a conviction, the jury instructions said.
I think that this is a key reason why much of DMCA will fail in court. Providing something that can be used illicitly is different from providing something that can only be used illicitly. A gun can be used to commit murder which is illegal. It can also be used in an Olympic event, which is legal. There is no legal use for crack cocaine, so having, providing, and using are all illegal. So as long as there are legitimate uses for the code, it should be legal.
My humble $0.02 on a complicated and tangled issue;-)
They were taken down shortly after I was pointed to them, but a group of folks did these amazingly funny reviews of Bil Keane's the Family Circus comic strip collections.
The reviews, that I recall, spoke of how the comics confronted the uber secret freemason's and so forth. I believe there were quite a few Kafka and Nietsche references as well. Hilarious.
Now I have a new google project for the day. Somebody somewhere must have saved 'em!
I think the problem you are going to run into is that studies cost money. Not all that much of an insight, I know, but it does mean that whatever study you find was probably paid for by someone looking for a specific answer. You can find, I'm sure, most of the raw data through various state and federal agencies. I think if you really want to know, then you probably need to get the raw data and crunch the numbers yourself.
Personally, I think that gun violence in America is more symptom, than cause. I also don't happen to think that the "cause" is any easy one to identify and/or deal with. Else, in another breathtaking stroke of obviousness, it would have been dealt with already.
Apologies for all the obvious statements, but it seems to me that on polarizing issues such as this, people tend to forget such little self evident tidbits in an attempt to push their own agenda.
I didn't get to read/. late yesterday. Damn. I just had this talk with a friend, and I am wondering on this, if the meter were the exact same length as a yard,do you think that the metric system would have been already adopted in the US?
Thanks all for your replies. I have always thought that there is elegance and beauty to be found in just about anything- depending on where you look. Its nice to know that code is not an exception.
I am not a programmer, and have minimal programming abilities, so this is an honest question out of ignorance.
What makes code good or bad?
Is it the resultant way in the program runs? Is it the effeciency of the code?
Finally, is it possible for two different programmers to look at the same source code and have strongly differing opinions about its quality, or is it a pretty much agreed upon criteria?
While I honestly do not think that an idea such as this will ever come to fruition, I cannot help but wonder at what the standard of judgement will be should it occur. If code is deemed to be good or bad based solely on subjective criteria, then I think the whole idea is doomed from the get go.
But Time Inc. has concluded that its free Web sites hurt circulation and Web-based advertising is too meager to make up the difference.
Maybe what has really hurt Time is that it has a lot more competition on the news stand these days coupled with the growing distrust of large media conglomerates. The web is also a source of competition with the "traditional" news outlets in that anyone with the time and willingness, ala Matt Drudge, can provide content.
I just really do not see how further restricitng your audience to that of a dying company is going to help you out. Maybe this will see the final demise of AOL and Time Warner.
The article mentions one of the working group members being Arbortext.
Dyslexia helped me read this as Abortext, and so my first reaction was that regardless of what M$ decided to do, the project was probably doomed anyway.
"Abortext- we loose the information, so you don't have to!"
I think you're right in that it could get excluded as irrelevant or non-responsive, but it would be great for the scenario you describe. A truly wonderful visual as well;-)
I think the distrust started with Watergate. It turned a lot of people off from the government and that distrust has seeped into the current generation as well.
I agree that capitalism is all about what getting the most money as you can, but I think it is being abused by a lot of companies these days. This may be overly simplistic and/ornaive, but I think the idea behind capitalism is that to succeed you had to do your best. If you wanted to sell a product it had to be better than everyone elses to compete. An excellent theory at that.
This may be part of the distrust showing itself, but it seems companies have stopped going by what is going to be the best product to a theory of how do I sell this to people and get them to buy it on the highest margin? It may not be stealing, but it certainly would seem to utilize a shady area surrounding truth.
I guess the question would then be what "earning" means. If you can get someone to buy an inferior product with slick marketing, does that mean that you've earned it the same way that someone who has sold the superior product has earned it? Frankly, I don't know. I see a good deal of positives and minuses to both argumetns along with a whole google of extenuating circumstances.
I think that this will help the eventual court case against DMCA. The more ludicrous uses that it is put to the more exhibits that can be brought to bear in getting it overturned.
Till that day happens, of course, it will continue to suck.
We are actually looking into getting the kids a PS2. We thought about the gamecube, but the PS2 lets you play DVD's through it and their friends already have a ton of PS1 games.
Yeah I got caught thinking either handful or about a half a dozen. Came out about a handful. I'd to blame it on working in a law office- no one wants to get tied to what they say- but my brain just works that.
I'm sure I have many more exciting spoonerisms to share with the world;-)
Thanks to RollingThunder as well for understanding the point of the initial post;-)

So they did up the fuel on the new ones. I had a feeling they might have but I wasn't sure.
As for the bottom line, you are absolutely correct. A 172 with full fuel can carry about 1.5 passengers. I'm lucky because my fiance and her kids are light.
I wonder if they can get around the non-glide thing with the parachute system utilized by the Cirrus?
Point one is that in reading the preceeding comments it would appear to me that the majority of the posters find this idea to be somehwere between misguided at best, or downright dumb at worst.
Point two is that in my overall slashdotting experience (which is still limited granted) I have found that slashdotters care about technology and will support something merely because it involves technology.
The final point would be that due to the fact that slashdotters tend to embrace technology ( a generalization I know, but bear with me), and that their reaction to this technology is negative, I have a hard time believing that this is going to work as well as the marketers may believe.
Since its double coupon day, I'd say that this is my $0.04.

I have not had the chance to fly one of the new production 172's yet, but I know the older ones cruise closer to 100-110kts.
The useful load does include fuel, which is typically 42gal of fuel max (there are some that have extra fuel tanks, but I do not believe that those are standard on the newer production versions). At 6lbs/gal, that comes to 252lb of fuel if you top it off, leaving 585lbs of pilot, passenger, and luggage to play with;-)
Now I have to find my ol' misleading history teacher...
Never try that again.

Did anyone else notice the irony in this quote from the bottom of the page and a story about new construction?
"Commodore hired engineers, Apple hired marketers."
And you know, only one of them is still in business. Its not what you sell, its what people think they are buying.

Interesting thought problem at the least though.
I think the distinction is clearer to me now. I could sort of see it before, but it makes better sense. Thanks!
