Why not Skype? License access to MSN, AIM/ICQ, and Yahoo! and extend the Skype client to support them. Put a tiny AdSense square at the bottom of every IM pane to pay the licensing costs. Voice chat (that includes SkypeOut) is ad-free.
From Skype's Terms of Service 8.1 Further, as stated in the Privacy Policy, Skype and/or its local partners may need to provide such data to designated competent authorities upon request, or may need to enter into further activities due to local regulations, for example with regard to the interception of communications, if requested by such authorities. So, if you're using Skype for the privacy features, dump it and switch to SpeakFreely. Skype CAN wiretap you and never said that it wouldn't.
Soule is amazing. I will definitely by buying his Guild Wars music expansion when it is released. However, I must admit that I'm not a big fan of his choice to use DRM'd WMA for the soundtrack.:P Just ship me a CD, Soule!
Who? China? Russia? North Korea? I doubt they have the resources. In fact, I'd say there's probably only one nation in the world that could pull it off effectively (coincidentally, it's the only nation on the warpath at the moment).
Hey, aren't you guys trying to defend yourselves against terrorists? How would nuking something from space stop a suicide bomber, anyway?
John Markoff is a hack who will write anything that will get him published. Now that Mitnick's out he's trying to find a new source of revenue - that means attacking anyone operating "in the grey." Remember in Takedown when Mitnick beat up Shimomura? I'll bet that we'll be seeing a best-selling novel by Markoff in which Clarke is a heroin-dealing child pornographer. Just give it time.
No need to lower ourselves to their level. There is no magic bullet for removing all spam. We are winning the war, but it will take a little while. Filtration is getting better every day, and I'm sure that we'll start finding uses for it outside of removing spam from our inboxes. We're starting to drown in information and I'm sure that a set of mature filtration algos will come in very handy later down the road. Education is something we have to work on, but it's getting better. It seems like most people understand what to do when faced with spam. There's still that last >1% that will buy from spammers, but we'll get to them soon enough.
Laser Challenge v2 is one of the best systems ever put out. They have some newer stuff and some older stuff but I'd recommend going for v2 (or v3/"radar" in a pinch). If you can find it, it goes for about $15 CDN for a vest (with front and back sensors) and pistol. You can also get a sniper rifle and a "shotgun" for $15 each. We've fitted our sniper rifle with a cheap hunter's scope from Canadian Tire and it works great. The v3s are nice because they can be set for team play but IIRC you can't get a back sensor for them. Friendly fire is more realistic anyway.:) Each piece of equipment takes 3 AAs and lasts forever. It's really durable, and teaching new players how to use it takes about three minutes.
Why is it that they got Metroid Prime so right (twice!) but got Hunters so very, very wrong? I've played the demo. A lot. It's not fun. It actually reduced my desire to own a DS. Nintendo should include the original Tetris with every portable it sells. Turn it on without a cart: Pictochat or Tetris? That would convince me to buy one.
Goldeneye. Don't give me that Rogue Agent crap. Put the original Goldeneye for N64 on the DS. Multiplayer is a must. Single cart multiplayer for bonus points. Online optional (but encouraged if you can do it right). Look, it's not hard. Cut-down Timesplitters engine + original Goldeneye textures, maps and models. It's super-optimized, plus the online multiplayer code is already there.
Ha! Come to Canada and watch them do it with our health care.

The DS has WiFi, a headphone jack and a mic. Where's the Skype cartridge?
Hey, I bey Skype could make some money by making a really small libSkype and licensing it to DS developers to provide voice chat in game. "You don't have to run a server like with TeamSpeak - our network does all of the work for you!"
Syncing with iCal - the DS has got WiFi, and I'll bet that your Mac does, too. It could be as easy as standing by your computer and waking your DS from sleep mode.
Too bad the source isn't available - we could have continued development! What we need is a web server running as a Tor hidden service that allows hackers to submit the source code of controversial proprietary software. Then if the project is taken down, the server immediately starts offering up the source.
Local data layers... sounds nice. Restaurants? Honestly, I don't really care. How about bus service? Seriously, lots of people take the bus. Many of them own computers. How about showing me the most efficient bus route, based on either the time I leave or the time I plan to get there? Bonus points: let me define a list of "regular trips," then e-mail me if there's going to be a schedule service outage or a route change that will affect any of them. "Phantasmo, the TTC has added route ###, which will make your trip to school ten minutes faster! Click here to get the map!"
The PSP and the DS do not exactly target the same market. The DS has two primary purposes - as a special controller for Revolution and as a handheld console for people who don't normally play games. That's why a lot of the upcoming titles are puzzle games and things like Animal Crossing.
Online capability: strange, even though X-box has Live, that didn't stop Gamecube from completely owning it in terms of worldwide sales... and Microsoft just started to turn a profit on X-Box??? Remember that Gamecube's primary customers are parents looking for family-friendly games. What if pedophiles started hanging out in Pokemon Online? The American media would eat it up and Big N would be dead in the water in a month. Definitely not something to be rushed into.
And as for those saying that Nintendo will stop making hardware: have you ever played with a Gamecube? Ergonomic controllers. Next to no load time. Sharp graphics. All in a small, light, durable box. $99 CDN. Sony and Microsoft wouldn't know how to pull that off, even if they had any interest in doing so.
If I want to play Ultimate Online Gorefest 2005 (complete with five-minute load screens before each level) I'll go play on my computer. However if I have some friends over and want to jump right into a really fun game, nothing beats Nintendo.
Here you go. No force feedback, small, ergonomic, and lasts over 100 hours.
Oh yeah, and I've dropped mine plenty of times and it still works great.
Dear Slashdot,
Please help us think of ways to blame this on piracy. We're really stuck on this one!

Why not go up north to Canada? You can buy fireworks on any streetcorner in Toronto before Canada Day.

Fido and Rogers in Toronto have had this for some time, too.
I'm guessing it's just MusicBrainz hooked up to the cell network.
Maybe the solution isn't "stop Tor" but "replace IRC?"
