This new copy protection doesn't sound like a big deal. Like some people hame mentioned, it sounds like you still will be able to amke direct copies. And if that doesn't work, you can still decrypt/decode audio and video streams from the vob files and join them to create the complete movie.
As far as I am aware, DMCA covers only digital media and encryption. Wo what the hell has that got to do with VHS. It's not digital, nor it contains encryption.
You are forgetting that we are talking about politicians. That money us not going anywhere! They would rather spend it on more confortable chairs and new cars. Most of it will go into administrational costs...

Like many people who have said the some thing, you seem to be making thesome mistake.
How are you protecting your "investment (Time, effort, energy, money, employees)"? If for whatever reason the person who would use a pirate copy of you product was not willing to pay for it.
I don't like the idea of potential profit. And yet everyone uses that to justify copy protection that gets in a way, even for paying customers.
Face it. There is a percentage of legal copies and illegal copies. However, that doesn't mean that the you are missing out on profit.
Lets have a look at scenario:
Version 1 of a products is little or even not protected against copying Version 2 comes out with serious copy protection. What do you do?
As i see it, only very few people will buy a legal copy(if any). So what happens?
Small group successfully hacks it and before you know it there's still people using it "for free".
People move to other things that they can get for a more attractive price (or free).
This won't change anything, the people who for whatever reason were not willing to pay for a legal copy are still unlikely to pay.
I still fail to see how this benefits "your" company...
There is a benefit to having people use your software for free. These people help you expend your market. They may not pay for the OS, but they may pay for a game. Indirect, but you still get paid some ammount. In many cases they still report errors, so they help you improve your product.
Having some ammount not pay for the product may still be beneficial to the company. Especially if they were not intending on paying for the product in the first place. It's better they are on your side then using someone elses products.
In this case they are causing more harm to themselves.
Evil? Maybe...Maybe not... I don't know how to answer that But i do think it's stupid!
M$ is having problems, that why they are looking for some of that "potential income". But, that will cause them to loose in other areas. As people turn away from M$. M$ will sell less of their developement software because more will consider other platforms.
There are actually a few good reasons to have the stand by mode on electronics. Without standby you wouldn't be able to use you remote to turn the device on or off. Granted, it does consume some power to light up the led and keep the infra-red working to receive the on\off message from remote, but that can't use that much power. Not 100 watts that a good tv or hifi needs to run. Some menufactorers claim that their devices use 2-3 watts on standby. True, it's not as good as zero but it's better then 100 watts or more if the device was to be left on. and lets face it, who wants to walk up to the tv to press a button when you have a remote.
Moving a little off topic now. Consider the 100 (as much as half a kilowatt fot a plasma tv) or so watts and then consider the "quality" on the tv, better off not owning a tv...
Another reason to have standby is to reduce the damage done to hardware by sonstantly turning it off and on all the time. There a big spike each time an electronic device is turned on, electronics need a little time to stabilize each time they are turned on. Components fail after continuos exporute to that spike.
What's wrong with the internet as it is now? Video, for what reqason? Do they mean more like flash? With interactive animations, or something different?
What i can see happening is animated or even worse, video adds. And I'll tell all of you, i'm not looking foreward to that. I think that's a reason enough to be negative. Wasting bandwidth for damn stupids adds.
I guess it wouldn't bother me so much if we still had unlimited cable. This "unlimited" cable shits me, all because internet service providers want to promote their own content delivery.
I'm for one looking foreward to modular X. I know that the changes don't mean much at the moment, not to the end user anyway. I'm curious how will this affect the developement process, if more developers will jump on the X.org wagon as the article suggests. Will we see releases more often? I'm also curious how will this affect video card menufactores, and ultimetly their curtomers. I don't know what about the rest of you. I see that there's a bit of mixed feelings about all this but, I'm excited about this. I can't wait to see what kind of an affect it fill have say... 2 year from now
Is this the end of the internet as we know it? End of free speech. Begining of people being labeled terrorists for speaking out their mind about thir government that should REPRESENT them, and paranoia?
I know, a lot of people will say "If you are not doing anything wrong, what have you got to hide?". That's not the point! If you do feel like that, i wonder how you would react to be forced to strip. Expose things that you can keep private to yourself and expose to persons of your choosing.
A little while ago i was supprised to findout that Foxtel (One of Australian Cable TV Providers) digital box will require a phone line (adsl) for some of it's features to work. I found that strange as foxtel is owned by Telstra (Australian telco) who olso own Bigpond (Telstras internet connectivity department) who use thesome cable as Foxtel for their cable internet.
If you are wondering what the hell this got to do with Media Copy protection, I'm getting to that.
Some time after that i found out that Optus (Another bit telco in Australia with their own cable tv and cable internet services) has different plans, that they actually intend to use the same cable to provide content and send information upstream from the decoder box back to Optus.
Now, there's a lot of people here saying that people will not buy a player that requires a permenant internet conection. Someone here said that the forum had decided against permenant connection which doesn't rule out a connection.
Most of us who have cable internet, already do have an internet connetion where the tv is. So it's not that much of a problem to connect a player to the internet.
And remember, not all people are/.ters. In fact I'm said to say, a lot of people are sheep. And they will buy a player like that and won't think much of it until they have a bad experience, untill their movie collection is blacklisted. When it's too late.
I might as well have read a post titled "Terrorists use the phone to communicate". You and I might call them terrorists but, they are still people. And people generally tend to use any piece of technology around them (assuming they are aware pf the technology and they are skilled enought to use it) to achieve their goal. They should not be underestimated and thought of as primitive because even they will adapt and develop new means and methods if need be.
Is it really an exploit considering it's intentional and has a purpose, it's almost like a featuse isn't it? In which case, can someone be prosecuted for using a feature of a product within the scope it has been designed to be used.

People make more and more software for the unix like. Nicer looking with more eyecandy, it also helps to keep up with Windows looking more and more like a toy then an operating system. The point is, people should install more appropriate software for their older hardware. Software that is less demanding. Because some idiot complains that kde 3.4.1 doesn't look nice on his 386 is not a fault on the pingiuns behalf.
More appropiate software and components make more specialized Operating System.
Considering an operating system can be exploited using bugs in the operating system, I'm curious what other exploits exist in other drivers. Possibly network interface card or firewire drivers.
With limitations to how much you can clock one core, it was only a matter of time. AMD is also trying to get ahead of intel as they have trouble with their architecture and get too hot.
How long will a drive like that last? Last time i know, Flash storage had a limit on the ammounts of reads and writes. It also slows down as it ages too.
I see flash as a short term solution in a notepad. If you run windows, or any operating system for that matter. The OS will hit the drive when reading data, hit the drive when writing data and then ofcourse we have swap space as well.
Somehow i feel like this nothing but a gimmick so menufactors con tell you about how fast it runs and how little power it uses...for about a year from purchase.
I don't think it's worth upgrading free software in entorprise.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Specially with linux, newer package versions may cause more problems to someone who wants a stable and/or secure system. Unless the new packagas have some new features you cannot live without, or has bug fixes. It's not worth touching. Entorprise value stability and security over almost all alse.
...Firefox will be hacked more and more now. Mozilla is getting some seriaous momentum and that will make them a bog target. Maybe bigger then IE with time. I hope that they respond quickly to bugs and flaws to keep it secure.
After all, that is why majority of people are using firefox.
