Why would Apple sue over this? On what grounds? There's no copy protection being circumvented, no cryptography being broken, it's a plaintext response. Also remember when that when Apple suggested legal trouble for Palm, Palm suggested that they wouldn't hesitate to strike back with their own patent portfolio. I can't see either party taking anything to court.
I have been working in the field for almost 10 years now
Things are different now than when we started working. What happened during the days of 1999-2000 (the time preceding the tech crash) just doesn't happen anymore. Your "accelerated course" (offered by companies like Devry in the United States) would be worthless for people entering the field these days.
Any sort of software protection preventing this will likely be broken in short order...
True. My buddy installed a program on his jailbroken iPhone that tells the Skype app that it's connecting via wi-fi when it's actually connecting via 3G. He lowered his monthly plan down to the minimum number of minutes, saving $30, and is now using Skype for all his calls.
Dubious speed claims is right. I've heard from friends that have "Optimum Boost" (30 Mbps down) that they're not getting anywhere close to that. It all depends on whether your neighbors sign up for the service - then everyone's speed starts to drop.
How bad is it that you're actually considering changing jobs in this economy? IMHO, you'd be a fool to give up a paying job now for something uncertain.
I had to help someone clean up a popup problem and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (which is free) eliminated not only the adware but also identified and removed a trojan that an up-to-date Symantec Anti-Virus didn't even find. I was really surprised.
So I was building a website for a local organization and I decided to use Wordpress, which is generally known as a blogging tool. Installation took a few minutes, browsing through the themes to find something really cool took about an hour. Then I found that when I created a page, it would automatically get added to the top menu. When I added subpage, it would automatically create a dropdown menu, with the subpage. So not only do you get the best blogging platform out there with Wordpress, you're also getting an easy to use CMS.
I read this comment here. I sent it to a buddy who's a pharmacist and he confirmed it was pretty accurate:
I've cured six people of lactose intolerance, but unfortunately I have just failed to cure one. It turned out she was actually allergic (as opposed to *believing* she was allergic, like most lactose intolerant people do).
So I'm modifying the recipe. First, apply whole milk to your skin for several days in the same place. If you get a skin reaction, you are really allergic, so stop now.
If not, eat yoghurt with live cultures every day for two months. It will be unpleasant at first, but then you will be cured and able to enjoy such delicacies as baked brie and milkshakes!
Humans cannot digest milk without the aid of intestinal bacteria. It's just a matter of having the RIGHT intestinal bacteria.
So what exactly the direction is Microsoft taking?
Samba will never be as good as AD. They're counting on organizations to install Samba, get used to the AD model, and eventually upgrade to the *real* AD. How can Microsoft lose? They're getting more and more users hooked to their nonstandard protocols.
I don't see any licensing issues as long as Roku doesn't try to block commercials. After all, it's just another web client, relegated to a niche audience.
I wanted to know what Google Notebook was so I went to the Wikipedia entry. It says, "Google Notebook was announced on May 10, 2006 and made available May 15, 2006. As of late 2008 however the service is a candidate for being terminated due to lack of demand[1]."
The citation is missing. Can someone verify that this is true? Why is Microsoft competing against a project that Google is dropping?
P.s. Can someone who knows more about this topic fix the Wikipedia page? Thanks!
don't be a teetotaler either (moderate alcohol use does NOT kill brain cells, contrary to the old story about "every drink costs you 100,000 brain cells". NO hang-over, no damage, and the other health benefits are worth it).
Cut down on alcohol, or avoid it altogether. When it comes to breast cancer, studies have been pretty consistent: there is no safe amount of alcohol. Even one glass of wine a day can increase your risk slightly, and the risk climbs with each additional drink. "This is something you can control," said Jasmine Q. Lew, a student at the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago who recently completed a National Institutes of Health study that is one of the largest on the subject. "Women can choose not to drink."
I've had the same experience. Our.Net 1.x code runs seamlessly after importing it into the latest Visual Studio 2008. There are couple of clicks to run the conversion process, but that only changes the project metadata, not the C# code itself.
Archival organizations like ProQuest will survive thanks to copyright. No way is the New York Times going to let Google host scans of any Times issues still under copyright.
Libraries will survive because few people go there for this kind of stuff anymore. As long as people prefer paper books over digital ones, libraries are safe.
The Canon 570IS as of a few months ago. I bought my 570IS from Amazon for $152 after reading about CHDK and verifying that it was compatible. My favorite feature is the exposure bracketing. Using it, I've created some great HDR shots.

IBM, where's my $8,000???? I have a 25 Mhz CPU I'd like to trade in!

Gordon Ramsay has a Slashdot account???

I realize that this sucks for Ireland but Poland is in far worse shape and needs the jobs just as badly if not more.
+1 Funny to the submitter who paid with a debit card and then whines about losing his privacy.
...he faced many difficulties in obtaining specific metals such as aluminum that are not allowed into Gaza

Terrific article indeed. Thanks for posting it.

I'd just like to thank you for posting the first intelligent comment in this thread.
Not if you're a woman. From the New York Times:
Not one comment? Looks like AIX on the Desktop is going out with a whimper.

$3/month for 10 GB. Enough for my TV downloads.
