If its a real pest repellant, it will disable Windows Update and stop Internet Explorer from wanting to be a default browser, and de-integrate media player
JPEG cuts the image into 8x8 pixel blocks, then compresses them. JPEG2000 uses streaming wavelet compression that can decompress and increase resolution as the file is transferred. The current patent doesn't affect gif/png, but it might make someone think they can announce a patent on png just like Forgent did with jpg.
If TRL is a direct reflection of what's on record store shelves, the net would be the only way to get decent music performed by the song writers with real intruments and non-synthesized voices.
Come to think of it, I don't think I've learned anything from a laserdisc/VHS in school.
You say they should be more interactive? Like a machine that could read and play Flash movies off a VCD? a solution might be to put them in a computer lab so everyone could use interactive software. Except all educational sooftware sucks, and they wouldn't trust students with today's internet. I guess Macromedia Flash will have to be our ubiquitous saviour...not
Reminds me of wasting money on Memorex's 'Music' CD-R's. they're not specially optimised for music, they just cost more for a liscence that enables the stand-alone recorders. I think I would have to overclock my CPU to run an overclocked CD RW without buffer underruns.
better yet they are allowed to announce it, then the patent is immediately destroyed and the company sued for patenting something they don't even own anymore.
look at investor relations->News. also, the article was posted a week ago. something I noticed from reading it is that it's not patented in satellite broadcasts. Hey, lets all use satellite internet! Or maybe DirecTV, etc. actually uses jpg for transmitting video?
I never even heard of Forgent until just now! well, maybe more software will start to support JNG now. unless 'jpeg network graphics' is a copyright violation.
they wanted 98's integrated internet explorer, but not integrated media player like XP.? wait a minute, they would want you to use a microsoft sound system... so it still makes not sense!
If you press Ctrl-Alt-Delete, or maybe Clutch-Downshift-ParkingBrake will the car instantly freeze and display a 'close program' dialog? press it again and you will reset, losing unsaved trip odometer, radio presets, and fuel comsumption?
sounds cool. but how well will it work (speed, hi-res)? my system runs slowly on a 1600x1200 desktop, so how well will the XboX work on 8 million x 6 million?
Comparison of different win32's win95: first 'home' version. buggy, slow winNT: 'network' version, different kernel, more reliable. win98: only 'good' home system. faster than 95 winMe: worst system! requires approximately 1 millenium to start win2k: enhanced NT kernel, better GUI. best system. winXP: micro$oft has lost it. NO DOS!

They probably wouldn't think of using the GPL. RealNetworks is definitely not 'free'.

with today's internet clogged by AIM lamerz, you can't survive by just downloading

Anyone can sue anyone after announcing they own a petent on something that has been in mainstreamuse for years.
1 cable - It's the epitome of Apple.
Pretty soon even the power will be USB.
new technology is developed that could lessen USA's dependance on foreign oil, except it only works with cars primarily used in Europe.

Even slashdot has given in to number-phobia?
Seriously, they should put something explaining about the word-karma in the faq
so essentially you will see 1 meter square pixels
