Its funny, they talk about how they want to be the leader in CG animated films, but most of the stills that they show on their website are taken from movies with CG/film composites. I think there are only three frames from animated movies. As far as I am concerned, ILM seems to be the leader in this field. Just look at Star Wars Ep. II or even more recent is the Pirates of the Caribbean. I would imagine that if ILM was to ever make a totally CGI movie, it would blow most others out of the water as far as effects are concerned. Also, they have years and years of experience in making movies, which is often more important than who has the fastest servers and the best pixel shaders.
"There is no legal way to buy unrestricted music:"
Actually there is. It is called emusic.com. Now, I haven't used the service but others are saying good things about it. Just try a comments search for emusic.com to see what other/.ers think about it.
i never said that I wouldn't trust the computer system flying the plane. In fact, I completely accept the fact that computers can do many tasks more accurately and, generally speaking, better than humans ever could.
yes...but the computer didn't decide this, it was the programmer who designed the system. An action of this type was most likely done through some kind of if statements or what have you, not through a thought process of the computer.
a store called WaWa that is around my area has the same thing. You can use it to create your own kind of hoagie or just pick one of the pre-configured ones that they offer. Of course, the hoagie is still made by humans (at least I think they are human).
but what I think the key difference here in what you mention and in the type of stuff the article is talking about is that machines in the future will be thinking. Right now the computer that controlls the throttle doesn't really "think" about anything. It just says "where is the position of the throttle lever? At 2/3, ok adjust whatever mechanical parts to cause the engine to run at 2/3 speed." It doesn't say, "hummmm...this pilot doesn't know what he is doing, I'll put the engine at 0 instead."
is their slogan "get loaded". Does Buy.com want you to get drunk while downloading their music? Is that the only way that people will actually use this service?
I so very miss the AOL Progz scene. Before, if someone on AIM or AOL pissed you off, you could do something useful to get them back (kick them off or annoy them somehow). Now, all you can do is "warn" them, which is almost pointless.
Thats ok, neither does slashdot. You can try to just link to/. from that site but for some reason it is 403 forbidden, so I just copied their html and ran the test on the file hosted on my own server. Turns out that it was not valid HTML 3.2 and had 155 errors. Try it for yourself...
And the lines they do have access to are more likely than not to be noisy as hell and not able to support a 28.8 connection. I live in New Jersey and my line was so noisy that it couldn't support a 28.8 connection...
I think that this quote might be true, I remember learning about this quote in history class from a history teacher that is a total history freak. If there was any doubt about the validity of this quote, I'm sure he would have researched it to find the truth.
Now, I'll grant you that there isn't a whole lot of innovation in Linux either.
I agree with this totally. Just look at the window managers that are popular with Linux. They, mostly, resemble what you would find if you used windows. I think that in today's world, many good ideas get "borrowed". I'm sure that at one point, there was only one company that had a cell phone that was capable of browsing the web. Now, you are hard pressed to find a cell phone that can not browse the web. Even in other industries, good ideas get copied. Look at cars. At one point, cars didn't have automatic transmissions, four wheel drive, or on-board navagation systems. Now, these are all features that can be found from just about any car maker. "Borrowing" is the way that this industry works. Linux "borrows" many of the ideas and features that people liked about UNIX, but just offers them for free. I like Windows XP and enjoy using it. I can't say that I always agree with what Microsoft does as a company or the ideas that they support, but looking at windows solely as an operating system and not considering the company behind it, it is a great os.
Henry J. Ellsworth said, "I assure you that my resignation from being commissioner of the U.S. Patent Office, is really of no great concern. Mankind, has already achieved all of which it is capable. There will be no more inventions requiring patents."
wow...its refreshing to hear a comment that doesn't start with "m$ sux0r". I think you are absolutely right in what you have said. Linux has its place and Windows has its place (like on my home desktop). I can't see Linux ever being replaced, as it really has found its niche. Windows, on the other hand, will probably always be used in the majority of businesses and will probably continue to dominate the home market. Perhaps it will gain some ground in the server market, but it has much more competition there. I can't really imagine the operating system market being that differnt from what it is now 5-10 years down the road.
I actually like Windows better than Linux for what I need to do with a computer. As someone who plays games on his PC, I pretty much dont' have any other choice. However, I also like the fact that Windows XP works so well with my Pocket PC as well as my digital camera. For an office environment or a PC that is for work and not play, then Linux would be much better than Windows. And yes, I have used Linux (Red Hat 8.0) and am not just guessing what it would be like.
would like to send my $6000 to buy a top end G5 as well as a top end PC, I would be glad to perform independant, unbiased benchmarks on productions systems:) Anyway, I think that all this crap about arguing over Mac and PC is really dumb. Use what appeals to you. I think that OS X is probably a great os, even though I have not used it very often. I use Windows XP every day and I can say it is also great. The one thing I can say is that I think that Windows has a much better way of managing individual windows, even with the new Expose system mac has devised. To me the way OS X switches windows seems like something akin to what I find on my pocket pc (at least the old way, I'm guessing Expose is a huge improvement, but still not as good as having the task bar.) Anyway, this is just my opinion, I think that everyone should just save their energy when trying to argue that Mac is better than PC or that PC is better than Mac. I use an Alienware box, and I must say that I absolutely love it and I'm sure that Mac users feel the same about their purchases.
actually Pocket PC doesn't suck. Almost everyone will agree that it is much more advanced that what you will find being offered by Palm and their OS. I think that changing the name is smart, as it will reflect that this is a windows product and PPC will not be confused with a type of processor.
Hummmm...sounds like I have a hope. I am not really worried about program compatibilty, as I mostly just use the included programs, seeing how I haven't had much time to find 3rd party ones that I like better. Can you please keep me updated? Or at least send me a link where I can remain self updated. my email address is dfj@comcast.net
Sorry, I meant years of experience making digital effects and animation for movies.
Remember, Apple's CEO == Pixar's CEO.
Free G5s, anyone?

wouldn't it just be easier to run windows?

there was a way to download music and pay the artists and not the RIAA.

that sucks...any clue about a good free browser? or perhaps even a very good cheap browser?
also...if anyone knows of any good free browsers for my pocket pc that would be great too.
