  1. is it possible... on PocketPC 2003 Reviewed · · Score: 3, Informative

to upgrade the os on an older pocket pc? I just bought a new Dell Axim and would very much like to install Pocket PC 2003. Also, I would settle on just being able to install the updated version of IE, cause the one on there now sucks.

Well, it looks like how you view the world always depends on your experience. I know that my XP box, and the two other ones that are around me daily, don't blue screen, ever. I have seen the Macs that I use somewhat at school lock up a lot. I'll admit that I've only seen OS X do it a few times, but OS 8 or 9 was really bad. I'm guessing that if we both used Mac OS and Windows daily, then we would probably see eye to eye on stability.

I love how every Mac user brings up Windows crashing. That is so old. Sure Windows 98 and ME crashed like there was no tomorrow, but then again OS 8 and 9 were just about as stable as their comparable MS products. As far as applications are concerned, they are dependant on the company creating them. I would say that companies like Adobe who make programs for both Mac and Windows don't crash on either platform. I run XP and I have never seen it blue screen. The only apps that really crash on my system are the beta downloads that I sometimes run. (Mozilla 1.4B crashes often.)

I would imagine that worms and other viruses are not really a problem to most Windows users that you would find on this site. I know that a vast majority of the viruses are spread using holes in Outlook, which is probably unpopular with this crowd. Also, people here know enough that you really need a virus scanner for full protection. I use Windows XP, and haven't had a virus yet. I also use Mozilla mail instead of outlook.

See...that is exactly what is wrong with the system. I believe it was Henry David Thoreau who pointed out one of the major flaws in our system of government, and when I say major, I mean major. That flaw is: voting is a joke to make you feel like you have power. Think about it. The people who run for the two main parties, the only ones who will realistically get voted into office, are first nominated within their parties. The normal voter has no control over this. Then, the final party candidate is chosen by primaries, in which the first two or three states usually dictate a winner long before any of the other states get to even vote. Then when the "real" election finally comes around, joe schmoe voter is left choosing between two men who, more than likely, they don't want in office. How is this democracy? To me, democracy means that someone would ask me what I think about every piece of legislature that gets passed through office. When was the last time a politician asked what you thought, even on a local level?

As I will be going to college as a freshman in the fall, I just recently made this same choice. I talked to people that I know are in college now and the result was almost always the same. I was told to get a desktop. Students said that a desktop gives you more bang for your buck and its not easy to steal. I've heard that the only time you really need a laptop is if you commute a lot, either from college to home every weekend or just to college everyday. Most colleges have computers anywhere that you really need them (ie: library, labs, etc.) Also, one of the professors at the university I will be attending in the fall said that hardly any students use laptops to take notes with. Well, I said that I just made this decision, and I think I made a wise one. I ended up getting an Alienware desktop. I just came less than a week ago and I love the thing. Sure it might be a pain to lug to the dorm, but I think its well worth it. Go desktop and I'm sure you won't look back. A laptop might seem cooler or whatever, but even people with laptops said they would get a desktop if they could make the choice over.
