Is the only main difference between Moz and Firebird is that firebird has a smaller footprint? On my box mozilla loads in around 1 second. Of course, on the slower computers that I've used I can see why you would want a lighter browser, but Mozilla's size doesn't bother me.
"I would assert, however that it does make the case in cold, hard numbers that the RIAA's claim of digital piracy ravaging their sales must be taken with a rather large grain of salt."
Like a grain of salt so big that it causes you to choke and die because the RIAA is a bunch of liars?
Yes, I assumed that MS would want to charge for what they would be officially supporting, but developing something can often be very expensive, so all they would have to do is sell the stuff that is already out there.
But it does highlight the complexity of Microsoft's struggles to make its products more secure. Because Xbox has so much capability...
You'd think that MS would embrace this community and use thier advances as a selling point for the X-Box. Maybe they could make software of this type an official release. The whole idea of the media hub seems to be what most companies are moving towards today, so you would think that MS would want software of this type running on its system.
Well, I do play and I do see plenty of n00bs and assholes. However, I haven't even seen anyone and said, wow...that person must be cheating. Perhaps I have just been mistaking thinking that someone who had apparent skill gained that fairly. Whenever I'm dead, I usually watch the person with the highest score, and never have I seen anyone who was apparently cheating.
Cheating is now close to destroying entire gaming communities (Counter-Strike anyone?)
I normally play CS, DoD, and BF1942 online and I have not really noticed any cheating. I think that this quote is very much an exageration. I don't think cheating will destory anything. Cause headaches? Yes, but not destory anything.
Maybe this life that we live now is the 7th version of the matrix. And, I am a programmer so maybe I could be the next "One". And wait! I can see the code! Oh...um...never mind. That's just my packet sniffer:)
From what I've seen and read, I'm more excited about the new Half-Life 2 engine than anything else. I think that its more important for playable characters to interact with their world in a more realistic way, than to just look beautiful. I think Valve has gone a long way with creating objects that act like the things they represent. Also, does anyone know if Doom III or Half-Life 2 will run with full effects on a nVidia geforce 4 Ti 4600?
is exactly what the Merovingian says in French in that long spree of curse words. Any ideas? Anyway, this movie totally blew my mind, and I can't wait to be able to see it again today as well as play the Enter the Matrix game.
I agree with you here. I ordered a new computer with a gforce 4 ti 4600 card. While this is high end, it is not cutting edge. Often, people get caught up in all the benchmarking (i know that its easy for me to do as well) and think that their system will suck if it doesn't perform the best. What you have to realize here is that these benchmarks are often in the 100s of fps range (with the differences between cards being a handful of fps). To me, I rather save some $$ and have 40-60 fps. I think that around 60 fps is all you really need to enjoy a game, and if a card can get this with full effects on, then that is even better. Having a card that can't really be used to its full potential seems kinda pointless to me, but if you have the money to spend then go fot it:)
I don't really see what's so great about blogs. Sure, I like the idea of/. where you can discuss mutual interests, but as far as randomly surfing the net seeing what different people did in their day or what they have to think doesn't appeal to me. Maybe i'm missing something or maybe i'm not, either way I'm not really into blogs.
If Apple was really concerned about how this was used they could have simply limited this to one stream and employed some kind of simple password needed to access the music. Besides, writing on their website that it is to be used personally, does not mean that the actual software team designing it thought the same.
Actually, this is not a hole in Apple's software. It is an advertised feature. If you want to blame someone, blame Apple, not the people using their software in a way it was designed to be used.
I seriously doubt that the software industry is dead. Lets just look at things in a logical manner. First of all, no one as ever been able to predict economics acurately. Economics is a guessing game and far from an exact science. If people knew how to read the economy, everyone would be much richer right now. Secondly, computers and software isn't going anywhere. Programmers and software companies will always be needed to produce the stuff that makes computers work. Computers are such a part of everyday life, that I can only see more windows opening for future types of software that doesn't exist now. Third, I am going to be a computer science major so I sure hope that they are wrong and I am right;)
So now instead of looking through the my documents/history section on my computer for that paper on George Washington, I have to dig through all my old stuff to find his bust? Sounds like much more work with this "new" system. I think that if you organize your files in a logical manner, then it is very difficult to lose them. Personally, I would much rather have a faster/better search tool for Windows than having to dig up a physical object to look up my files.
taken the laptop in the bathroom before to continue by browsing on the Loo. Many people read on the toilet and the internet is just another source of news and information for me, so it only makes sense to want to read the internet on the toilet.
True, you can do things with your files, but only on Apple hardware. I guess to a certain extent, Apple users are used to being locked into a certain piece of hardware or software. As a PC user myself however, I am used to being given as many choices as possible and making my own decision on what to use. I just don't think its fair that Apple can say these files will only plan on Macs, the iPod and iTunes. I think that you should be able to do what you want with, save sharing them with the world. Also, you can only change the files to any format you want after burning a CD then converting the files that your rip from that CD to another format. I just think that if we keep giving up fair use because things tend to work out ok (I can see how only playing these files on your mac, itunes, and ipod would not be all that bad to a person who has and enjoys these things) that soon companies will walk all over us. Now Apple says that you can only play the files you buy on what they allow. Next, it may be only playing the files once for each pay. Obviously, this is the worst case senario, at least to me, and will probably never happen. But if we don't fight for our rights of fair use now, then soon the music and movie industries could move to this system incrementally without the user really noticing or caring.
that SETI is just trying to get free HBO for three days :-P

according to altavista's translation that string means: "Brothel of whore of shit, bores to death, screws his/her mother"
Sounds like fun.

but what about those of us that try to build the loudest box? J/K, but it would be a cool project.
He was right about one thing: "quickest Slashdotting in history". I bet his DC is on fire right about now.

If Apple was really concerned about how this was used, they would have limited the maximum streams to 1 instead of 5 as I believe it is now.
I hope Apple patches this hole...

Obviously the machines are smarter than you :-P
The laws of thermodynamics guarantee that you're always going to put more energy into a machine than you're going to get back out.
Unless it's a heat pump where Qh = w + Qc. In a heat pump, you put in the w and nature provides the Qc.

very true...I don't think I would want to touch a public keyboard in a public restroom. Could be very nasty.
