Yes, servers that work on J2EE specifications are a pain to eliminate, but I live on the other side of the wall compared to you. I don't administer the J2EE server but write apps for it. I think Java is a very secure, professional replacement for PHP. I have written web apps in both and I think Java is the better solution for large projects or an web server used by an office or company. I would still probably use PHP if I need to code something for a personal website, just because it would probably be quick and dirty and I don't need all of the framework that J2EE provides. One of my favorite things of Java is the error handling. Exceptions, IMHO, make web development much easier. Also, Java seems very secure to me. I don't have to worry about my variables being overwritten by http requests or anything like that. The creators of Java also say that the JVM has been proven, mathematically, to be secure. You can take that for what it is worth. PHP is good but I wouldn't want to write anything large in it. But then again, I have not read up on the latest developments with the language, so I am probably a little outdated.

I thought that when scientists studied those ice corse, one of the first things that they learned was that climate changes seemed to be cyclical. In other words, we go from a relatively hot period to a relatively cold period. From what I have read, this seems to be a natural occurance of Earth. I don't really think global warming (or cooling) is something that we can stop. It seems to me at least, that this is a natural part of the homeostasis of earth. Sure, we might affect this cycle by some amount, but then again I would imagine that every life form on earth has some affect on it.

  6. Re:How good is OS X, really? on Apple Offers Mac OS X 10.3.7 Update · · Score: 1

Ok here are my thoughts: I linux unix/linux for its stability, its approach to being a multiuser system, its security, and many other things. I like Windows because I don't have to go through too many hoops to install something, many devices will work just by plugging them into a port, it has many important apps that I would like to use (Photoshop is one that comes to mind), and other reasons. Mac OS X definetly combines what I like best about both approaches and even improves on some areas. The best thing about OS X is that I can still do all of the geeky unix stuff that I want, but when I really need to get something done or I just don't want to be hassled, I don't have to touch any of the things that many people find turn-offish about linux/unix. I can use Photoshop natively and even use MS Office if I wish. To me, OS X is the only *nix that I feel comfortable using on the desktop on a daily basis. Recently I just started playing around with a version of X11 released by Apple. It really is amazing how simple it is to use something that I've often run into problems with under linux. Last night I found that you can completely forgo Aqua and have OS X boot to the console (try typing >console as the username on the login screen). From here you can start the X server and load KDE if you wish. I'm not sure if Gnome has been ported to OS X or not, but I would imagine that Gnome would be possible to have in the future. Another really cool app taking influence from the Unux world is Fink, which is a package manager that allows you to install apps ported from unix/linux by using an apt-get like syntax. Very cool. It really is hard to appreciate OS X until you use it every day. As an operating system it is great. I can't really say to much for all of the Apple apps that come with it. The only ones I really use are safari, mail, and iTunes. Safari is cool and I think it has some really nice UI features. I use Firefox at work and on my windows box at home and so far I haven't felt the need to use it as my main browser on my Mac. Mail is a good app for simple email reading. It does a good job with spam and the interface is nice. Can't really say how it does with more advanced things as I don't really have a need for them at home. iTunes...well I think everyone knows about this program :). I have only used iMovie on occasion and iPhoto, while a nice idea, doesn't seem to have enough features for me to really want to use that to organize my photos over finder. One of the beautiful things about OS X is even if you do end up using all 3rd party apps, you have a wonderful base to run them on. I'm not going to say that it Just Works, because no system is perfect and you can run into problems (although I never have) but it definitely comes closer to Just Working than any other system I have used.

Regardless of what you think about defense spending and the missle defense system, it is just being nieve to think that simply treating other nations with respect and kindess will prevent a major war. I think one example that has probably poped into many minds is that of Hitler. We can even go back to World War I, when America had a "let's keep to ourselves" mindset. However we were drawn into the war by various grievances. I'm not saying that it is right to treat other nations poorly or waste billions on faulty missile defense systems, but not thinking about defense with the hopes that humanity will be amicable will quickly look like a mistake when a power-hungy ruler begins to invade the nations around him or trys to committ large scale genocide. It has happened in the past, so who is to say that it will never happen again in the future? I have faith in humanity--faith that humanity is capable of committing acts of good as well as atrocities.

I think what it will really come down to is what games get developed for each system. With the exception of Mario 64 DS, I am dissapointed with the launch games for the DS. Now I haven't played all the games, but going on reviews and my own tastes I don't think it is very great. However, it does seem like some great games are in development for the DS, but I don't want to judge a system on games that don't exist yet. So far, the PSP doesn't seem like it has a great list of games for launch either. I don't really think either system will be completely handicapped by its hardware (although I would give the DS a slight edge), so it seems to me that games, and rightly so, will be the deciding factor.

I suppose that this is because OE wants to automatically select the email at the top of the list of the inbox. Even if this weren't the case and it could be simply fixed by not clicking on it, I'd rather install something new than cover up what appears to be a deeply seated bug/error/corruption that is sure to cause problems later.

The way I see it, the os is a tool. Moral and philosophic arguments aside, I think someone should use the operating system that best suits the needs that they have. If Linux isn't able to provide a platform that easily allows you to do your work, then you should probably consider buying a liscense for Windows or buying a Mac. Linux excels on many fronts, but I don't see professional digital photography as one of those. Often, there are some industry standards that clients or customers will expect you to adhere to, whether it be file formats or color management systems. In the end, a computer is simply something that allows you to do work or create something that would not otherwise be easily and/or quickly possible. If you take out the making things easy and quick, then the computer really loses its usefulness.
