In the next stable kernel (2.2.14), supermount will be introduced. This will allow for the auto-mounting of removable media, ala windows.
click on some icon to install
While the website is down right now, there is a Linux Standardization Effort which is pushing for a standard package system, and a standard linux installer, ala windows installshield. This would allow for the one click install which you speak of. Personally, I think that it is a good idea.
If there were more support for projects like this, Linux would be a lot more ready for the desktop.

No-one cares about you. There are MILLIONS of other quake players out there for ID to get video card data from. People who realize that information regarding if you're using a Viper v770 or a Voodoo 3 card doesn't matter.
This is NOT a serious offence. When there is a program that is actually stealing serious information about you, no-one will care. Why? Because of people like you crying about dumb little things like this, making amockery of privacy.
How dare they steal information from my computer without compensating me for that information?
How dare they? How dare ID Software be one of the first companies to port a major product to an operating system which had been previously unknown as a gaming platform. You should be greatful for the fact that there are companies like ID and Loki making games for Linux.
My advice, wait until there is actually something to complain about. Until then, shutup and be greatful. ...
And while its not yet the optimal solution yet, Sun is developing (and is in beta testing of) StarOffice for Java. And the Linux JDK/JRE is available for -
x86 PPC Sparc Alpha ARM and mkLinux
I'm still hoping that Corel LGPL/OpenSource WP 2000, although I don't exactly see it happening.
While I am interested in Intel catching up in the Mhz field, I'm more interested in the fact that we will soon see 7th Generation x86 processors hit the laptop market.
I'm curious how soon AMD will release laptop versions of the Athlon, seeing how AMD based laptops have been significantly cheeper in the past.
...and then someone will code an emulator (which will run trivially on the computers of the day), and people will play vintage PlayStation games on their computers, downloading them from the Net.
Bleem and PsEMU Pro already do this. Bleem claims that it only needs a p166.
With any luck, downloading a 650Mb PSX disc image will be as much a matter as downloading a 40k C64 tape image is today
People with cable modems, DSL, at schools, or any other place with decent bandwidth can already download a playstation game in 1 or 2 hours (less depend on where you are).
As for the companies caring.. they still care. But maybe in a few years:). ...
My high school just got a generous donation from sun consisting of some Sun JavaStations (thin clients) and an Ultra 5 server. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with Sun thin clients.
The Sun website says that the thin clients load JavaOS and the Hot Java web browser.. and it doesn't seem like they load much else. I'm wondering how you do word processing and spreadsheets on the thin clients. Apperantly you can load other Java applications on these machines, but how long does it take for boot if it has to load extra applications.
Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated, it seems like an interesting topic.

Is not very hard to install, although it does involve making some sacrifices (either re-installing MacOS or buying a partition resizing tool), it would be very easy to install after the partitioning. LinuxPPC comes with a graphical install program, and is very user friendly. Maybe you should help your friend with the install of LinuxPPC.
In response to your question about LinuxPPC Lite, read this. ...
The dozens of other upstart linux distributions which attempt at making the install process easy. You have mandrake with their new Panoramix/DiskDrake based install, EasyLinux with their totally KDE based install, and Caldera OpenLinux already has a VERY easy and graphical install process.
I saw about 10 other things like this at the Linux World Conference. I think that people are realizing that there is outside demand for easy to install linux, lets hope that some of these projects can merge.. not contribute to the looming fragmentation of linux.
There is all ready some basic USB support in 2.2.x and that will be greatly improved in 2.4. You could also go and use 2.3.x if you want more USB support, last I tried it was pretty stable. Anyhow.. it's coming along.
