I do realize that this is a business/job decision. I would say "Hell no!" quickly as my personal life is infinitely more valuable to me than my work life. However, for all the people here saying crap like "optimum productivity" or "studies have shown that the best work comes in..." or whatever blah blah I'm reading, I would like to remind some of you who grew up during the BBS days and watched Slashdot (or Linux when it was still primordial) to think of all the great software written by very passionate coders who are "legend" for "staying up drinking Mountain Dew for 20 hours to find the solution" or whatever the hell nostalgic memory you have. Seems to me many people here will brag about doing this as if they had seen Nirvana, but would resist doing it with petty excuses when they are asked or paid. Hmmm.

I haven't been on Slashdot for almost 2 years. I took about $3,000 and came to Germany. I was going to move at that time and decided to leave all in storage. Sold it 6 months later. Started learning German. Realized I could have done this in many countries many times and I missed alot. This money was only enough because I had made some friends locally, but at times I realized just how alone, poor I was and that my life WILL change tomorrow if I stop paying attention. People sometimes thought I was crazy, but I realized I could go back to America any time, work a few months, and do it all again, somewhere else if I wanted. Funny thing is, I didn't need the friends either, or maybe just for the small time we shared. Life can really kick your ass if you're not paying attention, constantly. I still live there as I write this, I live in Sittard, Holland on the border of DE by Geilenkirchen NATO base. Been a cook, house cleaner, and now my language is good enough to jockey a register. Many paths to the top of the mountain.

I believed the ending, when Neo is taken away, actually represented the "great vessel" of Mayahana Buddhists. Of course I see where that part has a crucified feel to it, as did the "birth" scene to me in the first movie (when they pick Neo up from the sewers with a "claw" and his silhouette again appears crucified).

I wasn't totally aware earlier, but you get it just fine. That's my problem with many of the Libertarian beliefs as well (it's simply too "rational" for raw, fuzzy, organic life). I applaud them for their idealism, but it doesn't take too long to find the cracks in the vase, so to speak, when inspecting their politics. As a philosophy, I can sympathize with Objectivism on some level, but as a political base I don't trust my fellow man enough to see it implemented :) Thanks for responding to my late post.

  7. just catching up on your rant on Anti-Muni Broadband Bills Country Wide · · Score: 1

Sorry I'm a few days late. Everytime that you bring up Libertarians/Objectivists, I have noticed you seem confused. Their philosophy can be summed up as "I swear by my life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine." If you had read any of Atlas Shrugged/Fountainhead (and I doubt you have) you would see that the corruption you speak of probably wouldn't exist. Of course, the books are quite idealistic and utopian, but that doesn't change the fact that you would still be wrong with you assumptions. In fact, the antagonists in her books are politicians and business owners that corrupt the free market she dreamed of, much like the issue you're ranting about now. That is, people misusing the law (or lack of it) for purely selfish bloodsucking reasons, i.e. asking another to "live" for your sake. You could open your mind, but I feel you're too sure of yourself to do that now, but check out this excerpt from Atlas Shrugged, as I think it may be an eye opener for you: http://www.atlasshrugged.tv/speech.htm

  9. Try this mindset on for size.... on 3dfx Unveils Info Regarding Voodoo 4 & 5 · · Score: 1

    2 points to make here....

if T & L are not that important in a product, then
why are other manufacurers now adding it to their
consumer/gaming cards (yes I know that it has been
in professional cards for some time)?

    Also,
3dfx has now gone OEM. They are thinking WAY TOO
corporate for my tastes, great products notwithstanding (still pro Nvidia here). The
numbers may be just a bit off, but you'll get the point:

the same year that the voodoo2 sold 5 million units, ATI sold 25 million of their crappy little
cards through OEMs, and yes, ATI is under the impression that their cards can play games well.

Starting with the TNT, 3dfx has been thinking of new ways to get your money with only small
increments of innovation/features in their products.
Is there anyone left anymore that cares just a bit
more for the respect of the community/public than
how much profit the quarter brought in?

3dfx is a great company, as is Nvidia, but people,
you must know that you vote for something in the market everytime you spend your dollar.

    Thanks for your time.

Understand that I have not used OpenBSD yet (when I can get all my fs's to mount in the ftp install I'll be okay:), but must say that FreeBSD is truly as fast as they say. I have seen much testimonial to OpenBSD's security, and just as many comments saying how sluggish it felt. I have spent about 2 years toying with RedHat (until my switch to FreeBSD), and I only feel right in comparing RH with my FreeBSD experiences, but FreeBSD feels as if there is alot less
overhead....not as encumbered. Definitely give it a try if you don't feel the absolute need for strong crypto and that secure out-of-the-box feeling, although you'll find much of this in the FreeBSD camp also.
