I you sell a $50 item, ebay gets at least $5 of that, paypal gets another $5, and soon your profits are down the tubes.

That's why you sell a $50.00 item for .01 cent, and then charge $50 + cost for shipping. No pickup allowed. Lot's of sellers do this. This reduces your ebay fee as they do not take a cut of the shipping (yet). Of course you're still SOL on the paypal end.

I've heard it's made alot of money, but how does it hold up to the novels? I am sick of novels I love being destroyed by two-bit producers who can't invest the little time and energy it would take to do them right.

The story followed the books very closely, much more than (for example) Peter Jackson did with LOTR.

The movie is what it is - a children's fairy tale. My 9 year old daughter absolutely loved it. But if you can't check your mind at the door, you won't like the movie.

The Christian allegory is unmistakeable as well. Aslan = Jesus is pretty obvious. Being a Christian myself, I had no problems with that. But the typical more secular slashdotter might not enjoy the movie if they don't ignore the religious parallels.

Seems to me you just contradicted yourself above. What are 'rights'? Who defines them? What makes them innate? You see, if there is no God, the word 'rights' has no concrete meaning. It is eventually defined by whoever is in power -and that's bad news if someone like Stalin is in charge. Human life has no unique value or meaning if it comes only by pure chance. I don't see why this bill (or free speech in general) has to be a partisan issue. In fact, Harry Reid (Democrat Senate Leader) was a co-sponsor of this bill.

The New York Times wrote in an editorial this week that "the Internet would become a free-fire zone without any limits on spending.

Seems to me that the NYT has a conflict in this issue too, as the blogs are in competition with the NYT. Keep in mind also - that under current FEC rules any editorial can be considered as an 'in kind contribution' to proponents or opponents of a bill. So the NYT would be wise to watch their back on this one.

Green, a senior fellow at the Pew Forum, said he was surprised to see that teaching both evolution and creationism was favored not only by conservative Christians, but also by majorities of secular respondents, liberal Democrats and those who accept the theory of natural selection. Mr. Green called it a reflection of American pragmatism..

So...Teach it all, and let the kids figure it out. Public School is not just a 13 year long science class.

Teach evolution as an explanation of natural selection in science class where it's appropriate. And teach creationism, ID, and other theories (including evolution) in other classes where it's appropriate. A well rounded education includes exposure to history, religion, literature and philosophy.
