socialism is not contrary to freedom. Socialism is in fact designed to be freedom, freedom from poverty and medical expenses as well as personal freedom.

That may be the way socialism is designed, but it rarely works out that way in practice. I prefer having more personal freedom, and less government interference in my life, thank you. The freedom to choose what doctor I want to go to without a 6 month wait. The freedom to develop land that I own, the freedom to keep the money I earn instead of being mandated that I give it to someone else.

If you had to chose to live in North Korea or South Korea, which one would you pick?

Note that the 9 billion dollar credit is how much they got in 3 years.

FTA: From 2003 through 2005, TIME estimates, the synfuel industry raked in $9 billion in tax credits. That means the lucky few collectively cut their tax bills by that amount, which would be enough to cover a year's worth of federal taxes for 20 million Americans who make less than $20,000 a year and pay income taxes.

So while this tax loophole sucks, it's $3 billion a year not $9 billion. That means it's a year's worth of taxes for 6.6 million people who make 20K, not 20 million.

If someone invents something for which the barriers to entry are too high - why shouldn't they be able to license it to the existing companies. Instead of the existing companies just waiting 3 years and then using the invention anyway.

The problem is that it is not some guy tinkering in his garage that is getting and stockpiling patents. It's greedy IP firms. Maybe a compromise would be to allow individuals to sit on say X number of patents, but make it illegal for IP only firms to do the same thing. This way the little guy with no start up money is protected, but the IP firms (aka NTP, SCO, RAMBUS) can't just randomly patent ideas and sue manufacturers.

Another reality is that if a company actually manufactures a product, they are less likely to agressively enforce their patent portfolio --- because they are usually vulnerble to a countersuit for some other product they produce. IP only firms have no scruples in this matter since of course they produce nothing except lawsuits.

Part of the problem is that the refs were actually bending over backwards trying to *avoid* penalizing Seattle

You must have watched a different game, or you're from PA. That 'bending over backwards' cost Seattle 2 TDs and 161 yards. The game I saw Pittsburgh was outplayed in every category except officiating. Less yards, less first downs, less time of possesion, more turnovers. The great Stealer defense gave up almost 400 yards. The officiating kept the Steelers in the game, dispite them being outplayed. Lucky for them they had a 12th man wearing stripes every time they were defending in the red zone. Even that pinhead Madden pointed this out. The only thing they had going for them was officiating

Officiating in the NFL is either terrible or tainted. My personal opinion was that ths game was thrown. Maybe they wanted to give Bettis (who wasn't even a factor in the game) the ring, who knows. And the Steeler fans that are apologists now, were screaming blody murder in the Indy game (and with good reason).

  8. Re:Who Really Won The SuperBowl? on Who Really Won the Super Bowl? · · Score: 2, Informative
Not really. ESPN had a poll the day after the game, and the majority (like 70%)from 48 states said the refs threw the game (exceptions being WV and PA). These results are despite the liklyhood that there are way more Steeler fans than Sehawk fans.

The Seattle 'big chance' plays were pretty much all called back on questionable penalties. And the Pitt big plays were given to them (the qb getting tackled on the 1 yard line and them calling it a TD comes to mind).

Geez, first time I've discussed sports on Slashdot. :)
