They say that Florida was the other alternative. Being someone who builds and launches payload with NASA on a regular basis White Sands is really the only launch option for a recovered vehicle. A row of launch facilities built and ready and a large area already isolated from civilization for recovery (or cratering). I know for our recoverable payload that White Sands is really one of our only choices in the U.S.
On top of that I live in Florida. The cape is really a turn-key operation and isn't setup to easily handle new payloads and rockets. Florida also doesn't have any large barren areas, it's either trees or swamps.
I don't think anything but White Sands was ever really an option, although playing that Florida might be an option might be a good bargaining chip to ratchet up the price that NM pays.
I wonder if I can schedule my next launch to coincide with this.
Only if you're continuously sucking up water. it's the 33ft column that's difficult to maintain. If you're pulling 5ft of water up a distance of 33ft it's not that difficult. If the straw is small enough or you suck fast enough it can be done.
> I refuse let low-life scum dictate how I can use my address.
I'm the same way. There's always people out there willing to do anything with any information they can get ahold of. I'm not going to let low-life scum dictate how I can use my credit card number and social security number. It's just not worth the hassle. I've had times where someone has come across my credit card number in my signature on an old message and they've charged me over the years after coming across the number, and I've helped out by paying their bills where possible.
I worked as a computer tech when I was in college. The job paid well but was very stressful. The boss would get mad at people and wrestle with them. A wrong guess would have this 250 lbs man lying on top of you in front of other employees. He made fun of every person he could, constantly. Eventually you just stopped doing whatever he made fun of. He would yell at one employee for doing A when they should have done B and then yell at another employee for doing B in a similar situation. He'd leave the rules vague so he could change his mind, not explain his opinion, and yell at employees for not doing their job right.
Some people say that putting up with horrible bosses is something you have to do. There is nothing you HAVE to do, and some bosses just aren't worth the stress. My fiancee at the time also worked for this guy. We're no longer engaged but the psychological issues she has to this day she blames on working for him. He would literally torture her when he was upset at something. I finally quit the day he slapped me in the face when I forgot to pick up something from one of his stores off the clock.
Now I have a much better job. I rarely see my boss, I have to hunt him down. The job is quite stress free, lots of benefits, incredible freedom, flexible hours, never on call, lots of travel, good pay, good benefits, and I have a bunch of employees working under me.
Jobs are different. If I would have stayed with my old job I would have jumped eventually. I gave up that job for something that paid quite a bit less but it eventually led to something wonderful. If you don't like your job there are plenty others.
You'd be amazed how much you could enjoy a significant pay cut for much less stress.
Manual labor? No problem, I'll be glad to work an extra 10 hours of pay sitting here thinking about the program I need to write. Want me to move my mouse or type? Sorry, that's manual labor.
I would give this a month or two before someone reverse engineers the program. Once the specs are out it will be real easy to remotely shut down entire computer labs at universities that are stupid enough to implement such a system.
Once the worm is released that jumps from computer to computer, using the MPAA software to disable it (after spreading of course) the university admins will have to weigh the cost of fixing all the computers against hiring a lawyer to fight the MPAA.
It's a crime to give a false report to the police but nothing about a false report to the MPAA. This could quickly be squashed if everyone calls and reports one person in a theatre and the MPAA sends the cops out on a wild goose chase a few thousand times.
This is news? This is the equivalent of posting, "My AMD processor is better than your Intel processor!" It's a quote designed to ignite a fact-less argument on who has bigger ones.
Now, if the CTO of Cray Canada started talking about your mother than I think you're morally entitled and required to respond.
I currently am a member of an organization that survives off of donations. This is a absolute gold mine of data. Take, for example, the following mail merge:

The wages on that website, what currency is that? Is that a decimal error?
I know of lots of job openings here in Florida that we have trouble filling. Lack of skill / motivation in the labor force maybe, but certainly not a lack of jobs.
When my $50,000 education can land me the same pay in India as my ability to speak english can at any fastfood restaurant here, there's no reason to ever consider moving.

With Kodak's business model failing expect to see a round of lawsuits in your future. Did you take a digital picture without paying your royalties to the Film Industry Association of America?
Remember, photographers need that income generated by you using their artwork. Everytime you take your own picture you're effectively robing from another professional film photographer who could have taken that shot for you and charged you for it.
P2P networks are notorious for allowing pictures to be traded illegally. When you use your digital camera to take a picture of a tall building you're commiting piracy. Since that angle has surely been photographed by someone else in the past you are killing their lively hood.
Expect new laws to be passed where taking a digital picture of a building is a $280,000 fine. That one gig flash card you're toting around with pictures of your feet could cost you millions of dollars in fines to the FIAA.
Taxi drivers will be fined for having pictures of their children on the dashboard - that's an unauthorized broadcast! Twelve year-old girls that take pictures of themselves dressing up like whatever pop idol they like can be sued for every piece of candy they get until they're 34. Grandmothers with pictures of their grandchildren!
I advise everyone to go pull out their film cameras and take some pictures. If the FIAA feels threatened they'll sue everybody. If they FIAA falls apart then there will be no more pictures in the world.
Expect Apple to open up an iSee store selling DRM'd pictures (only one view per day).
Have seen my share of weather problems with the DirecTV. The whole picture goes out and you get "Loss of Satellite Signal" for a few minutes until the storm passes. Annoying but still better up-time than cable.
I myself had a similar problem. During my college years I was doing about one 2-liter bottle of Coca-Cola a day. I never drank water, just downed coke when I was thirsty. If I went for some time without having any it would give me a nasty headache but drinking it wasn't friendly on my stomach either. But, living off a few hours of sleep per night for a few years straight will do that to you.
One day I just made the decision to stop. I went through about a week solid headache but after that the craving was gone, it really wasn't hard to get rid of.
A year later I couldn't find anything to drink but a coke so I tried one and couldn't stand the taste. At this point I don't think I could ever drink Coke again, the taste is just nasty.
Over time I finally moved myself to mostly water. Being a sugar addict also it took a little while to get used to drinking water. Water works well as an appetite suppressant as well as keeping you well hydrated. Your headaches may not be due to lack of caffeine as much as lack of water.
The downfall is that you run to the bathroom more than anybody you know. But to trade that for less headaches, a happier stomach, and overall better health was definitely worth it. You'll find that drinking water instead of anything else will make you feel better. I found that feeling better was a big contributing factor to me being more productive, both at work and at home.
Take a week and make sure you are well hydrated. WELL hydrated. A glass an hour. If your urine is almost clear you're doing well. If you get into too much water it may be good to replenish yourself with a sports beverage once in a while.
That's another issue. When I drank coke all the time I thought Gatorade was too bland and didn't have any flavor. After a few months of dedicating myself to water a glass of gatorade tastes like pure sugar to me. Suddenly I don't crave sweets as much. Cakes, cookies, candy - they all seem a bit overpowering.
All these positive things just from dropping the sugar and drinking water. Everybody was stunned when I first went to a restaurant and ordered water. Even I felt odd. Now it is just the obvious choice, everything else tastes far too sweet.
Give it a try and let me know how it works for you!
> would you please flip the batteries round so that the probe works?;)
You know my boss wouldn't find that funny at all. A few years ago he worked on a joint project between the US and the USSR - a satellite named Skipper. Russians didn't believe in testing their flight hardware, only shadow building an identical one to destructively test. Skipper's solar panels were wired reverse of the battery so every rotation of the satellite the voltage would drop significantly and never quite come back up. Within' a minute or two the craft had shorted the batteries to the point the electronics no longer functioned.
He says it remains in its 800km orbit, mocking him every 45 minutes. According to my calculations it should only mock him every 101 minutes.
When I got my Dell laptop it came with a blue and black backpack. Normally I wouldn't expect much for a case that came with the laptop but this backpack has lots of padding (not only around the laptop but also in the straps making it comfortable) but also lots of pockets.
I usually carry around the laptop with the essential cables (s-video to coax adapter and 25' extensions, audio cables, etc), USB cable for my cell phone, headphones, a joystick, my external floppy drive, my extra battery, telephone cable, 15' network cable, 15' crossover network cable, an AOL CD (we all get desperate sometimes), an optical mouse, and my external WDC harddrive WITH its separate padded carrying case.
This case usually just gets tossed around like any other backpack. The laptop is well protected and I feel confident dropping the bag onto a table. I don't feel that I have to baby the case wherever I go.
On top of that I live in Florida. The cape is really a turn-key operation and isn't setup to easily handle new payloads and rockets. Florida also doesn't have any large barren areas, it's either trees or swamps.

Wait, Larry Laffer is choosing the ads for us? I hope they have a PG version.
I'm sure most of the software I use would be different if I actually had to pay for it.

Man, I was so ready to post this as an ideal quote from the RIAA. Glad someone else sees a connection.
Actually I use Ephpod to upload music to my ipod. I have itunes but have never been able to get itunes to recognize my ipod.
The hotel room was given to him free, he was quite broke.

Sure, just send me a cheque and I'll be glad to purchase the laptop and forward it on to you after my cut. Much cheaper than a flight.
