    I managed to get a Job programming Java while i was in the last semester of my Master of Technology (Software Enginering) mind you it was $AU20K less than what i was getting in my casual fill in job and $AU35k less than what i was getting before being made redundent from my IT support role. A year later I more than double my income when I applied for a new job.

    In both cases I took along Assignments from my degree and a sample (screen shots, discriptions) of projects i worked on in my Master and as private projects. The employers where impressed by some of the past work, even though it was not commercial experience.

    Also if posible do some research on the technology that they use, so at least you can show that you know what the technology is, and that you have taken the time to find out.

  3. Big Car, Small Car on Fuel Efficiency and Slow Driving? · · Score: 1

    I Have a Big Holden Acclaim V6 3.8l engine, my wife has a Small Holden Barina 1.6l engine. We both use E10 (10% Ethanol) from the same pump. Now here is the surprise she gets 10L/100Km I get 12L/100km (I have had it as low as 8.2L/100km on a 1 hour 100km/h all the way trip) and I mostly do city driving (short trips to take our son to his carer then the station).

    Now you would think with an engine over twice the size of my wife's car I would be using a hell of a lot more. Well at 100km/h my engine is doing only 1700-1800rpm while at the same speed her engine is doing 2400rpm. Taking off from the lights at a reasonable speed (not smoking the tires up) I push about 2200-2400rpm, to do the same in the wife's car your pushing 2500-3500rpm

    On a flat road the smaller car is ok, but through some hills in and the bigger car cruses up them easy in top gear, the smaller car drops back a gear (or 2) and uses more fuel than the bigger one.

    So a smaller car doesn't mean better fuel economy.

    Some simple tips;
    1. don't over accelerate (rev engine more than the automatic can transfer to the wheels).
    2. find the optimum torque to revs and don't go over it.
    3. Use the highest gear you can, but don't short shift, it puts too much strain on the engine and reduces its life.
    4. Use cruise control where you can, some cars have special shift zones for cruise control that reduces fuel usage.
    5. Where possible take longer to slow down/stop your breaks turn all that energy you used to get to speed in to heat and wastes it.

    Other tips;
            Here in Australia we have a price rise cycle, the price is lowest price is the morning of the day before Pay Day (when most are paid) where it can be $AU0.15 / litre cheaper than it is that night. So find your cycle and have a credit card or the money to get it at its cheapest.
            In Australia we also have E10 (10% Ethanol) which is 95 Octane compared to 91 Octane for regular unleaded. I have found in my V6 3.8l I get about another 50km per tank city or 100km per tank in country.

    Hi

    I am actualy a Software Developer and i specialise in User Interface Design and Programming (mostly in Java). I have done Userabilty Engineering, this is the study of how a UI will be used, how to evaluate an effective UI and how to compare UIs. It go through how to recruite a sample of users and test their reactions to your UI. Using paper based examples, proto type interfaces and such.

    But the answer boils down to, 'Ask the Users'.

    Also you should remember that most western languages read top,left to bottom,right so if a UI flows in that direction users find it easier to use. Also try to reduce the mouse milage (eg. last thing you need to do on the page is at the bottom, but the ok button is at the top). Having a table row you need to click, but there is a hyperlink on that table row that takes you somewhere else that is wrong (people will click the link, even when they have done it some many times before).

    If the laptop had wireless and you could write something to get the MAC Address of all the Access Points in the area and strength, then send this info back to you. If the theift had an Access Point in their house and it was listed, then you would be very lucky.

    I actualy use BIOS passwords, yes i know its a pain starting up but if you also use the facility to put personal info into the bios such as a name and phone number, then you might be lucky and they ring you for the password.

    Where i use to work some brand new laptops were stolen, they didn't know how, but they were factory set with works details and a bios password. The idiot who stole them rang me for the password because he know i was a tech and knew the password, he gave some story that he got it at an action house. Of course i knew about the stolen laptops and he was arrested, apparently he had keys to every door, and had been taking stuff for years.

    What a load of crap. Ok, you pay the medioca programmer the 2 hrs to do what takes a superstar 10 minutes, your deadline is 1hr, with the superstar, you have 50 minutes to test it and you still met your deadline.

    The reason why superstars get the big money, is because they do it faster, better and in most cases without bugs. They write it, they test it, they give it to you and then go make coffee while the other guy is still trying to work out what you wanted in the 1st place.

    From what the original poster said, he doesn't care about the $s, he wants someone that can work on problems that someone with experience and the ability to look at problems from different angle and solve them without fuss.

    I have been programming for 20 years before i actualy got a Master of Technology (Software Engineering) I and another guy graduater at the same time, got a job in the same place doing slightly different projects, he last 1.5 months and could not compleat his project, they put me on it and 1.5 weeks later i done more than he did in the 1.5 months. Needless to i kept my job (well up untill i left for one that paid twice as much).

    so paying for a superstar may cost more by hour, but it could save you money and reputation in the long run.

If we follow the line down then the whole of the internet must go as it also contributes to Copyright violations and if we didn't have the internet then we wouldn't have file sharing and then the problem will go away. The true fact is that RIAA wants to shut down anything it cant make money from, it's got nothing to do with artists or copyright, it's all about money. If they were smart enough they would work out how to make money from it and all the huu harr would stop. One way I could think of is to let people send in a small amount of money for each song they have on a CD and for return they send out a holographic stick with serial number embedded in it and you stick it to the CD and then that CD is legal. They get their money and you get a CD that you actually want.
