Yes, back in the days when a bad web page would crash your browser this was bad, but I have not seen those crashes recently. If the browser is stable, what benefit do multi-processes have? Multiple Firefox processes seems like unnecessary overhead. Also, and maybe I should read the details, but if I am authenticated to a website in one tab, does that authentication carry over to other tabs using other processes?
If you enjoy management, then I would try for that. You will benefit from your experience and age much more than trying to keep up as a tech. Personally I like dealing with computers over people as they do what you tell them to (most of the time!) and don't have special needs or quirks. I also don't want to go to a ton of meetings.
It depends on your work environment. Where I work, the average age of the coders and sysadmins is over 40, so older techs fit in and it's generally a good place to retire. If you work for lets say, Google, like my fiance does, you will struggle to keep up as a tech as all the people are generally very young and don't give much respect to the older crowd.
I have a Summer Best View baby monitor
http://www.summerinfant.com/categories_products_view.php?id=322
that I found at Target and as much as I love this little device, it brought my wireless G network to a crawl. I could no more longer stream movies across my wireless. The camera end does let you choose between two frequencies and I found that if I change the channel on my router to 1 from the default 6 and changed the channel on my baby monitor, I have the speeds almost back to normal. I did have a problem with my wireless devices reconnecting and had to reconfigure most of them. I was really surprised that these devices were permitted to use the 2.4GHz frequencies, but at least I found a way to cope with it.
I have a Dell 2001FP and if anything, this is appraised for its fast response time - 16ms if I remember. I have not seen a noticable delay on any flat panel monitor.
I do however, see very noticables delays when using a wireless mouse - one of the reasons I choose not to use one.
I hope the submitter isn't getting his monitor and mouse confused!
It doesn't really matter how fast computers get. If a system only allows you a few wrong password attempts and makes you wait between each attempt, a simple password would take years to get cracked. The audit logs should be sending off alarms before that anyways.
You can't compare what the user has to remember to an encrypted password hash. Of course, someone with root or administrator privs can grab the shadow/SAM file and perform offline hacking with a powerful computer and crack the password quickly. If this is a problem trusting the sysadmins, then the password encrypting would need to become stronger, not the original password.
Can someone explain to me how an IE vulnerability can lead to a Sasser like virus? I thought Sasser was a worm that spread automatically through open ports of unpatched Windows machines, whereas IE vulnerabilities seem to have to be user initiated.
Scan Line Interleave was used in the 3dfx Voodoo products (that they aquired). nVidia seems to be calling it Scalable Link Interface as the article mentions in the second paragraph
I was paying $59.95 a month on their old plan, but after hearing about the deal from my friends coworkers, I just called them up and they switched be to a faster speed for much less.
Your basic DSL for $26.95 for 384kbps - 1.5Mbps. I was getting 1.2Mbps. Now I have the "pro" package for $36.99 a month and am getting 2.5Mbps download. I used to have some service outages because their PPPoE server would be down and not authenicate me, but it been quite reliable so far this year.
I noticed that flash does not work. I have even reinstalled using flashplayer7installer.exe which recongnizes Firefox0.9, but after I restart, it still is not working. It might have something to do with the fact that I had the flash "click to play" extension installed on.8, or something to do with Adblock that I just installed.
I have been using Pheonix -> Firebird -> Firefox for a while now which much adore, but I am skepitcal of this release. I do not like the new theme so much but changing to small icons is better. I not so sure about this new "Software Update" section under Tools -> Options -> Advance. "Periodically check for updates"? No thanks.
"Allow websites to install software"? Is this now another IE? No thanks. Well, maybe it's much more secure.
"Select new tabs opened from links" What does that mean? Oh, I think it was the old "Open new tabs in the background" option which was more intuitive.
Well that's just what I see on the front end so far. As long as they fixed some of the bugs, like "the page / can not be found" when hittting the back button. I also hope mouse over text for the tabs no longer gets in my way of pressing a tab. I have seen many websites freeze the browser which is very annoying, so hopefully those bugs are fixed to.
Ok, so they havn't explicitly said so, but have been hinting at it
Ati's Terry Makedon says: "Something big is coming for CATALYST in the next 2-3 months. It will take graphic drivers to a brand new level, and of course will be another ATI first. It will be interesting to see how long before other companies will copy the concept after we launch it."
Hmmm... just in time for PCI Express and it's not something specifc to Ati's hardware.
It is similar to fatwallet and I have found some good deals there, like a $5 motherboard with processor from tigerdirect posted. Unfortunately, most good bargains make you deal with rebates. This site will give you coupon codes for sites like Dell and Amazon, and let you search by catagory or store.
1. Nice to see an AMD64 directory on the CD instead of the old I386. There still is an I386.
2. EXE files seem to still start with the MZ initials and contain the text "This program cannot be run in DOS mode."???
3. Click on a.exe file on a P4 produces filename.exe is not a valid Win32 application - expected
4. Docs/XP_AMD64.TXT, system requirements contains:
* 1.5 Ghz Opteron(TM) or Athlon(TM) processor
* 512 megabytes (MB) of RAM (minimum)
See how many people try to install on their 32 bit Athlon. Suprised to see 512MB minimum.
5. Suprised to see this bit about the relatively new.NET framework:
Applications dependent on Microsoft.NET Framework version 1.1 are not compatible with Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition; Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition; or Windows XP 64-Bit Edition releases for AMD Opteron and AMD Athlon 64 systems.
Because Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1 is not supported by any 64-bit products,.NET Framework is not included on the 64-bit CDs.
The 32-bit version of.NET Framework is also not supported by these 64-bit products and cannot be installed on 32-bit applications running on 64-bit Windows operating systems (WOW64). This restriction applies to the current and previous versions of.NET Framework.

How about compare boot times. It would be hard to beat a C64 1 or 2 second boot up.

Geez with everyone doing it now, I had to check to see if there were referrer links to freeipods.com in the article summary.

I had uninstall Firefox AND delete my profile and reinstall flash. Lost all my settings, but now flash works.

I'd also wonder about the two port hub. Would they return with a rolled cable, an ethernet cable coupler, or something else?
