Take design advice from the people who brought us "magic quotes" and a configurability that makes it such a pain in the ass to write websites that will work the same on different servers? No thanks!

Maybe it won't make sense if only a single person is viewing it, but with hundreds, the gain could be very useful. Not just to the readers, but the writer too - if 100 people view the doc and 75% of them are able to understand it better thanks to this, that's much less questions the writer will have to waste time answering.

I also did page loading benchmarks using FireFox in XP and IE7 in Vista. I found IE7 rendered pages at least twice as fast in most cases.
That is hardly a benchmark of Vista - Firefox (on Windows at least) has always been *much* slower at rendering compared to IE.

    1) Does this matter? I don't need Microsoft being big brother - why can't I get the choice to turn it off? The very people who would actually care about signing are probably smart enough to be sure what they are installing is safe!

    2) You don't need to pay any money to develop on Vista - all the tools needed are free.

    3) Signing does not mean code will be stable. It does not mean it won't be malicious, or that it won't have hidden backdoors ie Sony. It just means you will be able to verify something is from who it says it's from. Saying that you trust some random company with your system because they payed $500 for a license is just stupid.

    4) I do not hate Microsoft. I have a few friends who work there and in fact I like Vista very much. This is the only thing that bothers me about it, both as a user and an Open Source developer.

The fact that you can't turn this off is proof enough that Microsoft didn't make it because it cares about its users. It's all for DRM.

DX10 is supposed to have an entirely different API so maybe I'll give it another chance.

If someone did make an Open Source implementation, I wonder if Microsoft would pounce with patents. I feel like they only tolerate Cedega because it's far from perfect and in a way helps put out a message (be the message true or not) that Linux isn't ready for gaming.

I'd say it is much different from copying files because it has to test for all kinds of hardware, generate a lot of configs and other file structures.

The alternative to the image based install? Up until recently the betas have used the traditional installer and it was like watching paint dry - literally, it took 2 to 3 hours (with a non-working progress bar to boot). The latest beta took about 20min to install and an extra 10min to do first boot configuration.

Compared to XP's install, Vista takes maybe 10 minutes longer and that's not bad considering the astounding 12GiB (for the x64 version. I think x86 takes 8GiB) it copies to the HDD.
