I don't know if he intentionally uses well-used names, but it sure can be a pain to search for Freenet info because free ISPs keep popping up. I expect Locutus will turn up a bunch of Star Trek fan sites.

At any rate it seems like a shuttle breaking up returning to Earth would only fall in the Pacific Ocean or the USA due to the return path.

Columbia broke up during the point of highest stress, which would be the most likely point for a breakup, and it was dead center over the contenintal U.S. Coincidence or design?

I wonder about a shuttle taking off, though. It seems to me that it might fall into another country if it exploded farther up than Challenger did.

Don't know how serious you are, but first off carbon nanotube fiber is the only thing known that would be strong enough and light enough for a space elevator.

The elevator will have to be carefully deployed; You can't drop it down from the space station because A: at that speed gravity is counterbalanced so the 'rope' won't fall; and B: the space station is not geostationary and would drag the 'rope' through the atmosphere and burn it up.

Read the High Lift Systems web site thoroughly on the proposed deployment procedures and the forces that will complicate the process.

I've read that that the ext2 filesystem can support ACLs but not many have implemented them.

A quick Google search brought me to this patch for ACL for ext2 with mention of POSIX ACLs, so I'm not crazy.

I've worked with Novell and WinNT in a production environment and find that fine grained access controls are an incredible pain in the ass. If I can maintain a tiered inherited simple structure then my life is much simpler than if this group wants to share one file in their folder with person A in city X but this file is for person B in city Y but they shouldn't see the rest.

Then later on a stupid coworker gives person C read access (or worse yet full access) to the root volume because of rights confusion. That happens too frequently: a lazy or hurried admin just gives full access to get the production issues smoothed out at great risk to security. (No one's deleted anything, but has a worker noticed at some point that he was able to view his senior manager's sensitive documents before I caught the error? I hope not.)

I avoid the convoluted ACL situation where possible and keep separate folders for separate ACLs/permissions and try not to subtract from inheritence.

After you have Cygwin installed you are left with a desktop shortcut that launches bash in a windows command window. The rest is up to you.

GNUWin II appears to be aimed to offer Windows users free alternitives to their proprietary applications, and perhaps to inform them about some free softare / open source political ideas.

The difference is largely the user target, and I assume GNUWin II's installers will be friendly for those used to cliking "Normal", "Next", "Yes" and "OK" and will place icons in the start menu and/or desktop.

By the way, GNUWin II guys, I went to the site, saw the link for Pingus next to Lemmings on the "Free Alternatives" page, but there are no stable versions available to download for any OS. The download page is full of "don't use this" comments. The last news item dated 12-22-02 said that a working release might show up in a few days.

I actually used Yahoo! for quite a while; for some reason whenever I needed to search it was for a company's web site or something that Yahoo! was likely to have cataloged.

I used Google Groups after they bought out DejaNews, but I didn't use the Google web search until I started reading Slashdot and it seemed the de facto geek search engine. I love it now.
