last week, Office Max had a sale on these Casio graphing calculators (usually about $80) for $5. I picked up one, naturally. I should've picked up more. You never know when you'll run into some problem that BASIC could easily solve. Unfortunately, I haven't figured out how to convert minutes to hours:minutes format with it... for the program I'm working on.
When I vacationed in Canada a few years ago, I took my TI-83 to convert currency and measurements for me. But, I found an even bigger need during the trip... converting CDN$ per litre of "petrol" to USD per gallon of gas. Things made a lot more sense at the pump.
I'm betting that they'll be quick and dirty ports of C64 titles, and most likely won't feature decent SID emulation. Just take a look at the Atari TV Games or the Namco arcade games... The Adventure easter egg is missing on the Atari TV Game, and the Pacman "patterns" are missing on the Namco one. Definitely not the original hardware... just ports that are good enough to fool you at first glimpse.
besides starroms, there IS a legal source of playing emulated roms... It's KIND of like iTMS... Check out Consoleclassix
They have snes, nes, sega genesis and atari. Someone figured out a legal loophole that allows you to "rent" a game online. They have original cartridges that they have backed up onto their server, and only allocate the number of copies they own to members. So, if 4 people are playing final fantasy, and they only have 4 copies, you can't play until someone logs off of that game. I believe the service is free for NES and 2600, and you'll have to pay for the rest.
Also, besides just roms, there are some new companies offering netflix-like services for older console games... if you still have those systems, anyway.
I had the pleasure of playing the original Atari controller, and I could tell, it was NO atari. They're ports. It's slightly entertaining, but I'd rather pay $10 than $20 for it. I don't know much about the first Namco one, other than Pacman's patterns are missing. (I kind of wonder how the vertical screen was handled). If the first namco one had Galaga instead of galaxian, it'd have been mine. They split up my favourites, I'm not going to get them both. All of these things are well emulated, so the only one I could make good use of is the paddle version (sold my atari collection).
Does anyone know what Megaman game is going to be on the Capcom controller? It'd be a crime to humanity if it weren't Megaman 2 or 3. The first is just masochistic. Are the other games arcade ports or NES ports?
I had the same problem (using win32 ver on XP), but then I found out the file needs to be in quotations and the directory MUST be specified (bad documentation)
example: playfair "itune.m4p" C:\
unfortunately, after all that... I still get: Couldn't get DRM key for user.
many people don't get that error, so it might help you
I don't have an ipod (they say you don't need it, right?), I unhid the itunes drm folder in application data (all users), and I have the first version of itunes (not sure if that causes a prob)....
so after all this trouble, I just recorded it to my Archos AV120 digitally. I can't tell the difference.
maybe a heavily modified bochs would work for the quiz game? =P
I'm a bit shocked the Raiden Fighters series ran off a 386... I don't see how they did it... considering it's leaps and bounds above any shooter I've ever seen on PC from that era. (anyone remember Kaeon or that shmup from Apogee?)
I've seen a lot of these games... I do believe it is the "Touch Master 5000" (possibly the 3000?) from Midway. It has a variety of games built into it. One of the best games on it is Quiz Wiz. Well worth the 25c. And if you get the top score, you get a free game. You'll find card games like solitaire, word games, chess, checkers, and weird mini-games...
I don't believe it's emulated... which is a shame, there aren't enough cool quiz games in English to play
Last year, I was trying to put together a sort of Wifi BBS a while back when I was living in a dorm on campus. This was to get past the "no server" policy at my school, and allow a place for people to post anonymous messages (about classes, teachers?), share files, and even a streaming radio station. Unfortunately, I couldn't pool any money for the project... and it never got off the ground.
I love some of the ideas on this site.... it takes it much further than what I was dreaming up.
I vaguely remember a videogame magazine article about two guys hooking up a game system to the Times Square big screen. They said it was really easy, had composite in and everything. They played a couple of rounds of Mortal Kombat (3?), they were 1:1, and then they got arrested.
Sorry about the sparse details, can anyone fill in the gaps? I couldn't google it...
yes, it is emulated. originally, it wasn't because they didn't dump the game properly (missed a chip).
they're available in goodsets nowadays, but if you have the properly dumped roms you can just:
Copy/b s&k.bin + s2.bin = s2k.bin
I would hope that they include all of the possible lock-ons for Sonic. Sonic 2 and Knuckles was my favourite.
I haven't seen a Genesis clone from them (or from anyone as a matter of fact), but maybe you're confusing it this? it was the first completely legal Famicom/NES clone (patent expired on system, games licensed from Color Dreams)
the latest incarnation of Geos for x86, New Deal Office, is still not released for free =( it's a neat OS that's very win95 like... even has a MS Office clone, web browser, irc, and instant messaging software. all this, and it runs on a 286! supports all kinds of graphics modes from hercules up to svga
I think they went outta business... they were charging way too much for it. might as well buy a new computer with win95 than pay for what they were asking for.
they had a demo avail on the net... I could never get the web browser to work. expired in 30 days or something, but that was extremely easy to turn off. I think the evaluation version was crippled (or was missing files), nonetheless.
forget it, the game is a mess... it's just plain awful.
it's just overhyped by the person who posted the article. it's not really controversial, and it's not a decent adventure game by any standard. it's not even an interesting experience. the author of the game should have at least made SOME effort in selecting better images to steal.
the game would have made a much better text adventure. even then, it'd still just be a really cheesy game done by some goth wannabe.
maybe next year if they group together another bunch of bad games, and have a category named "most controversial"... maybe a pokemon game will win for being the most violent
this game sucks, don't download it, don't touch it... it's not worth your "30 minutes"
Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of a Sierra AGI interpreter for GBA... but I think it's too early to dive into a game of Space Quest on your GBA. The save game feature does not work properly... the whole screen is glitched. Some games it just freezes outright when you try to restore. Also, in SQ, it seems to be missing the "you think you hear footsteps" warning... and it becomes much more frustrating when you have to start over from the beginning. I also couldn't pick up the "gadget" in the left closet.
It certainly does bring back memories, though. I haven't really played this since I was a young child. I really missed all of the subtle humour that was in the games. I first experienced the Space Quest series on my Tandy 1000 in its 16 glorious colours.
Personally, I think these Sierra games would have never sold in their current state. However, I believe that the VGA remakes of these games would probably sell much better (as they had a point and click interface and much better graphics)... and would fill a gap in the adventure game genre that we have today.
I believe a point and click adventure game came out early on for GBA or possibly GBC, does anyone remember the name of it?
what was that obscure system they used to give away at the end of Legends of the Hidden Temple (gameshow on Nick)? It used to be sold in the Johnson Smith catalogues in the early 90's too... it was a gameboy clone
no one I've ever talked to knows what the heck I'm talking about
setting aside the stereoscopic possibilities... and the VBoy references... will the system kill 2d gameplay? was GBA the last stand for beautiful hand drawn, 2d graphics?
I think 2d games could be so much more advanced on our next generation consoles, and even on pc. Now we can rotate sprites without nasty pixelation. Now we can create high resolution 2d hand drawn graphics. Now we can use real time lighting effects. But do we use any of them? no...
I'd hate for the next Nintendo portable to abandon 2d for really crappy and primitive 3d graphics.
the problem with most pc joysticks is that the plastic for the arrows is shaped into one big circle. the innovation that nintendo came up with, the plus pad, is the only way to go. look for those kinds of gamepads. accept no substitutes.
btw, who was the guy who invented the plus pad? and what was the original name given to it?
how DO you opt out? I have some music that I was planning to remove from their site, but they went under before I had the chance. I'd like to cut off any relations with them. I DON'T want to be receiving royalties or be making any money off the music.
that's the problem, can't find the equivalent =(

it's been farked, slashdotted, AND penny-arcaded! anyone got a mirror?

does your tamagotchi get an std for mating with random strangers?
just tried it, it works great! I'm going to try and conquer Space Quest, now...
still doesn't warn me when I'm about to get shot, though =(

the belkin one isn't the same... it's still circular externally.
note that the dreamcast has the plus pad. read the page further that you linked to. someone even mentions that the patent expired.
