I can't tell from your opening sentence if you're agreeing with me or not but yes that's right FF is a bit slow.
I realise I'm being greedy but honestly, I run between 5 and 80 tabs at a time, normally I'd say I hover in the 15 to 20 range. I don't care WHAT resources are used, I do not care at all, the fact is, the HDD is not thrashing, yet it's still slow
So it's CPU, GPU, internet link or memory bandwidth. I don't care which one needs to be tweaked, fixed, cached or patched, I want 5x the performance, I'd love it. Seems web pages scale, when I had a 56k modem, my browsing was always 30 to 50% too slow for me. Then 256k adsl, same and 512 and 1.5mbit and now 18mbit, I think the latency here in Australia might be half the problem (that being said Chrome really did blow away FFox)
Either way, just make my browser fast, stupid ridiculous, insane fast, I will throw the CPU at it but give it to me.
I love firefox, I can only thing of ONE problem with it. Performance. That's it, functionally it does precisely everything I want it to do, EVERYTHING, the keyboard controls, undo close tab, the ad blocking, everything is how I could possibly want a browser.
The only thing I'd like is 5x the speed, I'm willing to throw hardware at the problem but I think it needs to support multiple cores first. I'd like to see it use disk cache far better (it simply doesn't 'feel' used based on the speed it works at) I'd like to see memory cache used better, I want the whole experience much much quicker, I'd like some better DNS caching too.
Chromes performance is mind blowing, I'll pay that but in my mind it's un-usable, if I were to make an analogy it's an Ariel Atom vs a BMW M3 - one is much quicker around the track but the other is substantially more functional.
There is no doubt in my mind from reading your post that you're one of the people this article is talking about. The 'I deserve' generation is really going to be royally burnt by this recession a nice dose of reality for all of you (and sadly me too)
Is the correct term "cure" for removing a software virus? The first 10 seconds after reading this I was trying to figure out "what's the conficker virus, who is it killing?" etc.
I would've thought fix / solution / tool / patch / antivirus routine would be better than 'cure'
I could be wrong though, I've been using PC's for 18years now and despite plenty of piracy I've never had a virus, so I've never had to cure one.
Sorry to yell but Firefox is damned near perfect for me, bar 2 minor issues.
1. a crappy web page which locks up a tab, I want to be able to ignore that tab / process and continue browsing, without locking up the entire browser. Full honesty: I'm not a coder so I can't appreciate how difficult this might be, but I don't care - I'm an end user, I feel this would be a very very welcome addition to Firefox. 1a. performance increases from 1, ideally also
2. Applications and plugins 'stealing focus' of firefox keyboard controls. Control W Control tab Control shift tab Control shift N etc etc Some of these awesome and handy keyboard controls simply don't work properly when using FFox on pages such as youtube and other flash based pages, the plugin itself 'takes focus' of the keyboard and for all the ALT D, ALT TAB or any other combination of keystrokes you simply can't get the browser to listen to the commands, you HAVE to click the current tab up the top and re-highlight it / select it (try it now, you'll see a faint outline circle the tab)
I really wish that could be addressed as I'm a 'high end' keyboard user and it really gives me the niggles to have to go up and click on that. Anyone know a way around it? I tried to document the issue on youtube but it's hard to put in to words, or visually. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLk0MBSxb-A
Comments like this and the functionality that is mentioned in the post really makes me wish linux took off properly like it should have.
I only know a little bit about it, have used it for maybe a few months alltogether but that is just brilliant and powerful. Such a shame it's where it is.
Having now delt with Nokia's support people for their products, I can assure you their phone could shit gold in to the palm of my hand and I wouldn't want it.
Fuck that company, they've entered my permenant shit list, I will tell friends and family to avoid them as much as possible and I myself will also, I doubt it will amount to anything but those scumbags do not deserve my cash.
Norton disk doctor and norton speedisk where both fantastic compared to the Microsoft alternatives under DOS 5/6/6.22 (my era) speedisk used to do a real, thorough defrag of the drive, sure it took a hell of a long time but it totally sped things up, especially logging disks in ztree.
Over the years it became worse and worse, I think the first one or two windows revisions were somewhat decent but it's been a good 6 or 7 years since I'd ever even consider installing their stuff on my machine anymore.
FWIW I found a tool called "Ultimate defrag" it's got a ghastly interface and looks like it was designed by someone with 'my first developement toolkit' but the underlying defrag technology it uses is actually pretty damn slick, it really will do the old school Norton style "full with file re-order" and actually does move what you want, where you want it, scope it out. (No I don't work for them)
Is this a recent edition? I had mine until about July 08 and it did no such thing, it only used that filthy DLNA rubbish which shat me to tears.
I am not aware of this addition at all, I have several windows file shares setup for XBMC to work with and it works fine, the PS3 and 360 simply could not use them (in July) ?
The point is the PS3 is constantly derided by un-informed people who seem to enjoy exaggerating the point or following the status quo, despite having never owned or used one. It's hip to pick shit at the PS3 - very lame.
Actually there's an incredible CPU and a run of the mill GPU.
Who knows what will win in the long run, the 360 has an inferior CPU but better GPU and memory design. The PS3 has an incredible CPU but a weaker GPU and totally dopey memory design (256/256 split, not shared) The PS3 does have some monster bandwidth, guarunteed hard disk though.
I think you'll find 'those crazy japs!' will pull some interesting games on it, like the people who made SOTC and ICO.
(FWIW: I adore my PS3, I really do, best impulse surprise purchase I've made, thought it would suck until GoW3 and instead I ended up selling the 360)
Yep, the PS2 was supported for a long time after it game out by Sony, whereas MS dropped the Xbox 1 like a bag of crap basically. That being said, the Xbox 1 was costing them money and had the lower marketshare.
Now the reverse has hapenned, the PS3 has the lower marketshare and it costs Sony quite a bit of money. I'm hoping that the PS3 slowly builds up sales over time with more and more decent games.
What Sony specifically needs is to have some more developers onboard with EXCLUSIVE games only. One of the most stupid things Ken Kutaragi ever did was allow GTA4 to go to the 360, they were offered it and refused to pay the exclusive price. One of the dumbest moves a gaming company has made in the past 20 years. That alone would have gained 2 to 5 million marketshare for Sony, right there.
Graphics still do play an important part in gaming. The Wii is appealing to a mainstream demographic, children, grandmothers and general non gamers. The Wii is basically right now a replacement monopoly set for the family to rally around at xmas.
There is a use for the Wii in the casual younger 'party' gamer type, people come home after a night out on the piss and just wanna hang out and Wii bowl and that's fine. Ultimately though the Wii is NOT for your traditional gamers and we single player, storyline focused gamers ARE still out there and we do spend money. Many, many a Wii sits idle due to lack of use by my particular, geekier demographic, the online is bad, MOST games don't focus on SP or good, linear, narrative driven SP.
So now we get to me and my demographic, I don't have a lot of time to game but when I do, I sit down like a good book or movie from start to finish and sorry but graphics DO matter, there are limits to what I will put up with. Now they don't make a game but they help - do you think God of War 1 and 2 would be as fun as they are with stick figures? They'd still be fun but it would be not as good.
I am more than happy to drop some coin on good storyline games, with good graphics, good gameplay, good online etc. I'll pay the extra for the graphics and depth.
This Wii fad WILL eventually stop, or perhaps when they try to introduce "HD Wii 2.0" see how many people don't flock to it. There is many many an idle Wii out there and there's many people who have bought it and maybe they do use it but they sure as heck aren't going to even consider replacing it any time soon and they probably don't won't buy any more than the top 3 to 5 games over the lifetime of the entire system - they buy on trends and marketing.
Meanwhile us 360 and PS3 "hardcore" or "hard-casual" gamers are buying between 2 and 10 games a year. I already have 10 PS3 games and I've had it for 13 months, all of the games 80$ AUD each - and I'm an ex pirate who would only download before for goodness sakes.
Long story short. GOOD DEEP single player games DO need decent graphics and audio and gameplay - waggle controls and simple gameplay simply doesn't cut it.
The 360 does not blindly have 'the better games' in any way at all. This is firstly a completely and utterly subjective thing.
Secondly, something which 360 gamers seem to blindly forget (time and time again) is that NOT EVERYONE OWNS A 360! So right now there are PS2 / Xbox1 / GC owners who are looking for a new console, don't blindly assume they have a 360 and the PS3 offers no value.
About half of the 360's good games are ALREADY ON the PS3, as they are cross platform. About half of the remaining half are coming out on the PC also....... or already out The remaining 25% of the 360's good games are truely exclusive to the 360.
That being said, of course half of the PS3's great games are cross platform and also on 360, logically of course.
I am tired of having to defend my purchase of the PS3 to people blindly assuming 'everyone has a 360, why get a PS3?' I am getting a perfectly satisfactory experience on PSN for free, some may argue the 360's cost of live is cheap but as a 'hard-casual' gamer (less than 30 hours online a year but I do play mainstream blockbusters all the time) - why the heck should I pay 50$ a year for online?
Also the PS3 is SIGNIFICANTLY quieter than the 360 is, before the option to load to HDD (NXE) the 360 was frankly, a god damned abomination of noise in my loungeroom, I was glad to sell it.
Overall I'm very very happy with my purchase and if anything, Microsoft need to woo me in to re-buy another 360. Gears bored me senseless, why I don't know but it did, it's a shame as I'd heard so much positive about it. I loathe Halo as one of the most over-rated franchises of all times. Fable 2 they completely stuffed the movement, animation and camera code compared to the original >:( I found this not fun either (damnit!) Finally Forza 3,... well this is something I want pretty bad.
I'm sorry but this is the most apple loving bullshit response I've seen on slashdot EVER.
For goodness sakes the man is in Japan! Do you know about the telephones they have there, seriously? Do you have any concept of the features, functionality and low cost?
Take your damned apple blinkers off for a moment, what an insulting suggestion "less is more! it's from apple" Good lord.....
If I know your telecommunications companies in the states, you work it out to about 23cents a month they will see that as $2.30 a month.
Only country I've ever heard where you PAY to receive calls or text, good god I would go on a machine gun rampage if I lived there:( (That being said, I am in Australia and we do have hellstra keeping us down here so I can't complain too much on your behalf)
Correct to a point. The PS3 and 360 are for the 'guys' between 14 and 44 (older is fine of course you older gamers)
The Wii is MARKETED towards children, housewives, grandparents and extremely casual gamers. It does have some use in a purely casual party environment with the hardcore demographic too, it's a social console if people are around, yet online, it's FAR from social.
The Wii doesn't appeal to the 'normal' gaming demographic and frankly the fact that large amounts of gaming development budget is starting to be put towards developing for it frankly makes me sad.
The thing has gimick controls, it SHOULD have had motion plus at launch, it won't even play a DVD it doesn't have fcking optical audio output or HDMI (low res or not, no HDMI out in 2009!?)
This isn't just anectodal evidence, I genuinely know several people who literally have the thing under the TV collecting dust, the device is mainly a replacement for monopoly or a pack of cards at xmas, which is pulled out once a year because 'hey, remember that year granny won at bowling! haha'
I despite it even more, knowing nintendo is milking the shit out of the system by releasing peripheral after peripheral but offering little for online connectivity or storage solutions for the few who do donwload (OVER PRICED) old games on it.
This is about un-necessary gimmick accessories for the sake of consumerism. Sure all the consoles are just like htat but the Wii takes it to the next level with bullshit accessories for frankly bullshit games.
How many stupid bloody plastic toy accessories are going to be released for this fad of a console? You've got the Remote and Nunchuck. In 12 months you'll have "remote 2.0" which has Wii Motion plus built in (AS IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE FIRST PLACE) You've got your dopey plastic guitars. Balance boards, classic controllers now this controller.
This thing is an excuse to sell cheap plastic accessories with 1 game. Soon it will be a 1:1 ratio of games to controllers available for it, all the while your consumers snapping them like wildfire.
Sorry people but I owned one of these things and my god amd I glad to see the back of the thing, I'll stick with my PS3 and maybe buy a 360 again when Jasper Elite finally comes out.
I can't tell from your opening sentence if you're agreeing with me or not but yes that's right FF is a bit slow.

What do you mean the 360 has SMB support, as in accessing windows file shares?
Never owned a PS1, didn't 'sow' anything, not a blind PS3 fanboy, you're welcome to try and label me as one but you'd be wrong.
The point is the PS3 is constantly derided by un-informed people who seem to enjoy exaggerating the point or following the status quo, despite having never owned or used one.

I've been gaming for 18 years and my hands aren't cramped, sore or any such thing.
My forearms are a bit weak because all they do is hold a mouse, controller or a twinkie (or 3)
I've had marathon gaming sessions, no sores on my hands.
BLAME THE VIDEO GAMES :/
Next.......
