I went to the bloody Microsoft forums to discuss some of the shortcomings of Windows 7.
I told them X and Y and Z and mentioned why I don't like this and that. The response from the MVP's on the site was basically pedantic stupidity.
Most of the features I complained about were actually introduced in Windows Vista and have remained in 7. So because I was saying "I prefer it the old way" they were correcting me because "but it was like this in the old way, are you talking about XP?" as if XP users don't exist?!
I mean really, let's be serious now, Windows 7 is an attempt to convince the XP holdouts to switch to the new tech, Vista sheep have already been convinced it's all fine. So here I am saying "look I'm fine with breadcrumbs on as long as there's an option to turn the things off" instead you find 15 responses telling me how good the breadcrumbs are. I don't give a shit if you like them pal and I'm happy for you but don't go telling me I'm 'wrong' because I don't find them innovative, what HARM is there in having them turned off for me? Jesus the internet kills me this week!
I figure slashdot is the most likely place on the internet where the Windows users (if any) think in folders and paths - having the display broken up with stupid downarrows is annoying!
Eventually the MVP's told me to bundle my posts up and post them in to a single giant 400 page thread that the developers go through from time to time. What?! I want to debate and discuss the intracacies of UI design, if a single topic like breadcrumbs takes 3 pages to hash out a good solution so be it, not a single whiny post from me going "Hurr I don't like breadcrumbs" - what will the dev team think of that post?
I am a pedantic, whiny prick but I firmly believe I'm right (surprise surprise) and furthermore options are always good for the end user. I've made some massive Vista whine posts on slashdot and my general issue to this day remains, the core explorer and user interface is an abomination, XP isn't flawless but Vista is worse and frankly that's not good enough.
I can think of 2 positive things added in Win 7, one is superior to Vista, the other is superior to even XP.
1. If I hit Win & R (run) type in c:\windows\system32 and hit enter, the results are different on XP, Vista and Win7. Windows 7 now has without doubt the best result, it opens a 'full' explorer (with tree) interface and the tree on the left is expanded to the folder you are in (if you enable an option) under Windows XP you had to click 'folders' button (but it was still good) under Vista, it was an abortion
2. The default 'full explorer' the "name / size / type / modified" bar at the top, Windows XP is basic, simple, clean Windows Vista is an abortion a filthy disgusting abortion of cluttered UI and hatred, it drives me insane! (See this picture from my previous/. posts http://abrasion.shackspace.com/lolsta/whywhy02.jpg ) Finally the 'full explorer' in Windows 7 is a hybrid of XP and Vista and the dopey little intrusive downarrows are gone on those fields but do appear on a mouseover - absoloutely lovely.
I know these 2 points are so damned minor but for goodness sakes, most of us are techs / geeks, sure I don't run linux ok, forgive me but I do still work on a Windows PC and damnit if I don't want data, in my brain QUICKLY and NEATLY and having an interface full of, well rubbish doesn't help me do what I need to do. Check this thing out for an example of why Vista is an abortion in UI design and I didn't even circle every thing you can interact with... http://abrasion.shackspace.com/lolsta/wtf02.jpg
Movies were mediocre at best:/ The TV show had it's ups and downs but it was brilliant overall. I'm sure it's already been said but damnit if it isn't true, such a shame about those movies.
So my email address for my slashdot account is 'slashdot @ mydomain.com' It has a catchall on it so I have accounts for shacknews, hardocp, anandtech, techreport and god knows what other forums (Iamtrouble etc... oh god she's hot)

This is the same thing as these new 'overdraft fees' banks have been charging people.
If I accidentally withdraw extra money then STOP me and say 'insufficient funds' for goodness sakes, don't give me the money AND bill me, I never agreed to that.
(for reference, I've only ever got that fee once, but it was for 300,000$ overdrawn (decimal place issue) - long story)
I don't have much of value to add to your post, you're on the money but I figure since you're already +5 can I just give you a shout out to the entire "FUCK STREAMING" crowd.
We don't all live in Korea or the US, I want a file, on my drive that is fast and easy to work with, I do not want to bloody stream, my connection simply can't handle it half the time over here.
I for one have my laptop with Azureus (vuze) downloading using RSS, my XBMC (Xbox) connects to a network share and bam, I can see Top Gear, Mythbusters, Family Guy, BSG all less than 2 or 3 hours after they air in the states, over here in Australia.
The quality is more than acceptable (I'd love it even better but I can't afford to grab the 720p eps on my link) When my XBMC machine dies, I will be sad, I may replace it with another Xbox or I'll try to find a HD XBMC solution (Mac mini maybe, would prefer to use my PS3 but Sony hate me:(... )
Either way, to paraphrase Jay, fuck streaming, fuck it in it's stupid ass.
However he's right, it's lawsuit central out there now, the world is ridiculous, what can a teacher do? Call the principal, the principal can tell the student off, they still may not leave the classroom - period.
So the highest level of authority in the school still can't PHYSICALLY do anything if the person is being a little shit.
I hate cops involved in rubbish like this, I really do but this litigous (sp?) assholes have brought it on us all.
You can say nonsense and get a +3 all you like, the fact remains that several motorola models require a damn driver installation, I know this because I have to install it for half our damned users all the time.
Yep, I'm seriously considering 'going hackintosh' just to learn MacOS and try something different (I hate Vista that much and eventually I'll want 8gb, 64bit etc)
I can always run XP in a VM for any XP only functionality I need and then I can re-boot in to the XP install to actually play the games themselves, it's a win win overall.
Even if these people make a sustainable power source of some sort using solar or wind or waves, ultimately it's not sustainable due to population growth. Ever more people will demand ever more power, until we curb the people count we're stuffed.
I may have bitten the bullet and switched to LCD for convienience but it's still a disadvantage for extremely high end video gamers in competition.
If you go to a proper starcraft tournament or a CS tourney the 'pros' are still using CRT's Here's an example of input lag and this is LCD vs LCD - so there's even some lag on the left display http://www.newswheel.com/files/IMGP2146.jpg
Interestingly I was playing quake live the other day with some people and one particular guy (who I will admit was bloody good) killed me at least 2 or 3 times whilst running around a corner, I was dead before I could even see him. We both had the same ISP and ping and I asked what display he used and he still had a CRT. (He would've beaten me anyhow but none the less it definitely cost me a few lives)
In 1 month I got over 100 hours of play and I don't normally even like online multiplayer games. This is co-op as it was meant to be, just how we envisioned it as kids before we even knew Doom could hook up via a serial cable.
Ever since those have been released in this country (Australia) and very strict laws and fines on speeding it's been more dangerous to drive. They changed the speed limit from 60kmh (suburbian sts) to 50kmh (37miles to 32) The problem is the threshold for fines here is 3km over the limit or ONE POINT EIGHT fucking miles an hour.
So if you're doing 104kmh you're elligable for a fine, so people religiously look at their speedo or go under the limit (which in itself causes frustration) Furthermore the red / speed in one combo cameras cause people to lock up their wheels HARD because they don't want fines.
These things are designed to make money, that's it.
Great game. I purchased it on steam in a 4 pack for about 35$ US - I felt 50$ US was too pricey but at 35$ this is excellent value and incredible fun in co-op. I really hope it breathes new life in to the game with the SDK
I'm a bit more curious about 64bit drivers rather than Windows 7 / Vista drivers.
We will ALL be going 64bit within the next 3 years, I myself have a 5 year old HP printer, back from when they actually made them half decently and with some metal in the body, not all plastic. The thing works fine and is barely used, it's a good little printer but I keep hearing stories that many older printers are simply being ignored for 64bit support.
I'm not sure what to think of this, one side of the coin, I can see that HP shouldn't need to write drivers for a 5 year old printer. The other side of the coin, is this is a perfectly good printer, it's in good order and I bet there's many more like it, infact as most of us know, the majority of changes in a series from one to the next are very little, Deskjet 920 / 930 / 932 / 935 / 935c / 935cxi these are all extremely similar products.
It was a stupid idea in Vista and it is a stupid idea under Windows 7. It's all fine and dandy for the sales and marketing people to whip up this fancy idea and the beancounters but the real people affected by this are us, the tech people supporting, implimenting or cursing it - plus the coders at Microsoft having to fix up all these versions too (yes, believe it or not, some of the poor programmers in the Windows team are humans too - poor bastards)
XP had it right, there should be 2 versions, 'crappy' and 'the worksburger' the crappy version should still have all the visual wank the end users want but be missing say the ability to attach to a domain, remote desktop fucntionality, that kind of thing.
(ideally, there'd be ONE version but I doubt they'll ever do that again) Any more than 2 versions is lunacy. Sigh.
To my knowledge it's bloody expensive in Australia, let alone over there. That kind of money, I'd damn well want to keep my notes, incase I need to look on them one day 5 years in the future.
I mean you're 'buying' this education at this establishment, they should be kissing your ass for going to their class. I wouldn't call the police nor would I headbutt a teacher - but I'd at least grab their hand or something if they started rummaging through my bag - fuck that noise.
Tell me, how do you find the noise the keyboard emits and most importantly, how is the 'cold aluminium frame' - I keep hearing it's unpleasant to work on in winter if you're a bit of a pussy (that would be me) I'm under the impression it should help your WPM though.
As for a laptop style smaller keyboard - you may want to look at the logitech dinovo edge - it might be just what you're after.
I wanted to get out of bed and clean then you people post this, lovely - I'll be here 20 minutes typing this one up.
So anyhow I'm in the process of hunting for a new keyboard myself. I personally feel one of those most important things to focus on first is the layout of the keys themselves on the board, if you don't have a layout you're happy with, what's the point?
You've got several varieties, I'll show several here and my personal opinion on them (and also why you may like or dislike them) http://img.clubic.com/photo/00351428.jpg First up the enermax aurora keyboard. This is absoloutely 100% standard US key layout, every key is exactly where you would expect it, the only slight change is slimmer and closer function keys to the number keys, I think likely quite acceptable and my favourite layout.
http://ak.cdiscount.com/pdt/0/0/0/1/f/PCK8000.jpg Here is the Samsung Pleomax Zen edition keyboard, this also has perfect and standard key layout, with NON intrusive multimedia keys at the top, aesthetically they look simple (cmon, I'm a slashdotter) but they also don't look like they will get in the way.
https://ssl11.chi.us.securedata.net/miccomputers.com/merchantmanager/v4/images/microsoft-keyboard.jpg Now this is one of the ones a lot of you should be paying attention to. I used to use a similar model to this, you will note the multimedia keys are again mostly non intrusive, not in an area you could likely hit them accidentally, HOWEVER! This is one of those new keyboards where MS have opted to well..frankly fuck up the delete key and the function keys (3 grouping not 4) - look at that abomination - it's a disaster, I don't know why they've deviated from the norm but I've accidentally hit delete many a time on one of those things.
