    the adams series is the best intro on photography (albeit focused on analogue technology) - and the above mentioned 'the camera' is an excellent resource.

    okey, i lied. i don't actually have an IBM Mainframe, but i do have a NUBUS card that fits into my Mac IIsi (and the IIcx) intended for hooking a mac up to a one.

    since i don't own one myself, and the only people still running those here in sweden might be the army or some old banks or insurence companies, i havn't been able to test it. but it's in its original anti-static packaging and has a manual and a floppy with (i guess) drivers and terminal app.

    i don't have the card here, so i can't tell you brand or make, but i got it as a souvenier when i quit my mac-tech job; when the card was new, it cost around 70'000 SEK (around 6000$). now it's a souvenier...

    other than that, i still play prince of persia on my SE, as well as Deja Vu and other stuff that keeps crashing on my iMac.

    it senses your wanting, and stays far, far away - hidden in the forest like a wild dog which only approaches you when the camp fire is out and you are asleep.

    to have the spam come to you, you must learn to put it out of you mind. fill your mind with good and happy thoughts, and let those thoughts cloud you intentions, much like a straw mat hides the bug from the birds that hunt it.

    then, and only then, will the spam come up to you.

    oh. and my 2 : if you intend to use cds for backup, except using the good kind, also make sure you are not writing or sticking labels on the cds, keep them in plastic covers intended for storage (not crystal boxes, since they give off fumes that damage the cd), and keep them in the dark with some moisture absorbing stuff alongside.

    i have in my mind a more of less perfect setup of a workstation. it goes something like this: alien.

    that's right. i'm gonna build a room covered in pingpong balls, and use voice-commands for everything on my comp, using 'mother' as the trigger.

    all the stuff that i need, like books, misc papers, scanners, coffee, phone, blah blah, would be tucked away in one of the hidden drawers, that extend to where i sit on voice command while, get this, it puffs out small clouds of smoke going chk-tsssssss .

    you think i'm kidding? i'm not. oh, and for a chair, i'd go for that ceiling mounted thing from event horizont, so that i could just rotate in my room at leaisure. so when i'm bored, i'd be weeeeee.

    now that's a good setup. not those wimpy designer tables that look good only when not actually used...

    so if i know anything about any human history, and found it intriguing, i'd be a hypocrite to object to the game?

    titanic and saving ryans privates don't matter. they're fictious, and are not made more real because they are using historical events.

    the critique of this game, as i see it, is basically that it will be showcased as a "real" simulation of events because it will be so closely integrated with what's shown on the tv that those kids (or adults, for all i know) playing it might not see it as the piece of shit propaganda it is.

    i guess i'm just appaled of the stupidity of some people, and the gull of others.

    assuming wallclimbing doesn't require being bit by a radioactive spider, it would be kinda kool to make a couple of those and let them climb around at random at home. if nothing else than to entertain the cat.

    besides, couldn't you build a human wall-climber using the same principle?
    does this tech scale (sorry) well?

    well, not technically, but considering that Quark is the industry standard for delivering something to print (here in sweden at least), someone doing layout is bound to use one of the big formats (quark or pagemaker); a very useful feature (for any app that tries to out-do another app) would be the ability to export to that other format "Scribus > Export as > Quark 6.0".

    then graphics designers would actually have a choice between using Quark or not (and of course, decide for themselves if they need the extra functions Quark offers and don't mind paying for them); until then it's not so much as holding a gun to their heads, but stating "use quark or change buisiness".

    or: it's concerns about compatibility, not cheapness, that would hinder professionals to use scribus.

    althought i havn't tried it yet, i'd recommend checking out netfone by haxial.

    it's available both for mac & pc (supposedly works across platforms), and if the quality of this ware stands up to their other stuff (specially kdx server/client) it must be good.

    i've noticed lately that caffeine makes me feel normal; not in the sense that i haven't woken up yet and need a coffee, but in the sence that my mind becomes free and un-clouded after 200mg of caffeine. i get more creative, i learn stuff faster, my memory improves.

    since i hate coffee, and only drink it if pills aren't available, i usually start my day with 2x100mg caffeine, and maybe top it off with another one or two after lunch.

    one really neat trick i learned while studying in iceland (where the perpetual darkness was quite a pain) was to set the alarm-clock to 30m before i should get out of bed, swollow two pills, reset the alarm to when i'm supposed to get up, and presto (!) i'm awake enough the next time it rings.

    but if i'm dependent on caffeine? nah, i'm not caffeine to caffeine, i just caffeine caffeine whenever i need to focus on caffeine.

    f64 : too much coffee and no sleep makes f64 go something something...

    baggins, did you see any socialist, class warfare mantras in my post?

    don't be a moron; if all the media was controlled by a communist state, of course that would have a huge impact on what people thought, and of course that would be equally unjust.

    i'm not criticizing the message of major media, i'm criticizing that it is controlled by a small number of corporations, which OF COURSE limits the discourse possible.

    this is beyond left/right politics, it's more along the freedom/slavery lines.

    we're not cattle, but well suscepteable to mass marketing, which is what media outlets are being used for.

    it's not a lack of free will, but it's well funded persuasion. and it works terribly well.

    in short: any deregulation of any market, leads to monopolies, and a deregulation of the media market leads to control of a majority of people.

    stuff that's considered benefiting a 'greater good' should be invested in communally - thus ensuring (a somewhat) democratic control of it.

    and in this time and age, i'd say broadband connections should be considered at least as importand as libraries or museums. 'cause, like, you know, it's, uhm, information?
