Wow I guess this means I am no longer responsible for my actions. I get fat, sue the fast food industry. I decide to kill someone, video games made me do it. I want to use drugs, hey man I heard it on the radio. I am hoping that someday people will just take resposiblities for there actions.
I always thought they were Round to prevent streets from cracking. When they are round, the manholes are round, and there are no corners or structual weak points for cracks to appear.
You know, I was rebuilding someone's PC, and the only way I could load Windows 2000 on that computer was through the 4 floppy disks. They don't have anything yet that can replace the Floppy Disk. Plus the fact, that when transfering just a few word documents or a files at a time, nothing beats the floppy disk. They are one of the few things that almost all PC's have. When you are in a classroom enviroment, most of the time you have to use Floppy disks. Theres no other way to take the work to your own PC.
1. Installation, I think it is important that learn how to install the operating system. In this Microsoft World, where almost every computer you buy has a Microsoft OS on it, teaching them how to install the OS is important, maybe go over how to set up partitions, and how they can save there window partitions if they want to.
2. For a particular distrbution, I would recommend the one you are most comfortable with. Students lose faith in instructors if something wrong happens and the instructor doesn't know how to fix it. But let them know that there are other distrubutions out there like RedHat and where they can go to get them.
3. I would teach CLI first. I started out learning Windows 95 in my computer class, and when the only thing I could get when booting up my computer was a C:\ Prompt, I didn't know what to do. I eventually taught myself DOS, but I didn't make the same mistake with Linux, Learn the CLI First then the GUI. Or better yet, teach how to do functions with both. The command in the CLI to pull up Disk Space, and the GUI Tool to see it. That way they can compare things, and at least know there is a CLI command for just about everything in Linux\Unix.
4. I would give away copies of Knoppix, that way they don't destroy anything. Then tell them where they can obtain copies of Debian, and Red Hat, and Mandrake.
5. Try to make the class fun. Show the class all the neat things you can do with Linux. I like the suggestions about setting it up a game machine. Other then that, good luck holding there attention.
Wow..5 years, I never knew that slashdot has been around that long. I would like to thank slashdot though. This site, and the stories, and comments was what gave me the guts( for lack of a better word) to install Linux and give it a shot. Ever since I have installed it, I have it loaded on every machine at my house except for one. My Gaming PC, thats it. The majority of work is done in Linux, and I love it. Thanks Slashdot. Have a happy birthday.
Right, an NT box up for over a year, removing adminstrative accounts, removing root, sure.....your either being sarcastic, or you have never adminstrated a computer at all.
How did he delete the administrator account. I always thought that in Windows 2000, you couldn't delete it, just like the guest account, you could only rename it. With Windows ME, there is no such thing as Adminstrator, its a 9x based OS just like 95 and 98, no security.
Would I prefer to talk to a quickly accessible, well-paid, knowledgible, experienced trained human over a machine?
The problem is though that most of the time, they are shoved into boxes 2 days after they are hired and are expected to take calls, cause management feels that we need to cut training to make the numbers for a month.
That and with the Word Perfect Reveal Codes, you can find and remove strange formatting errors by finding the code and removing it. I loved that feature of Wordperfect, and wished that it was in OpenOffice.org, if it is there, would someone let me know where it is at.
This is the first time I have used Mozilla seriously. On my Linux Laptop, I think I prefer Mozilla over Opera, on my Windows Box, I Like Opera better. It just seems like Opera pulls pages up faster on my Windows PC. As far as my Linux Box goes, Mozilla is far more stable then Opera is.
My Favorite thing about it is the pop up stopper, far more intelligent then the one that comes with opera. Is there anyway to get all new windows to open up in Tabs, rather then a new browser windows?
Linux on a laptop is a great idea, I have Suse 7.3 running on a Dell Inspirion 2500, with KDE 3.0 on it. Had to do a little configuring with X though before it would work. Once that was solved everything worked except for the (win)modem. I love it.
You can't ghost the activitated version because you need to run sysprep on the system to change all of the sid's before you mass distrubute it.

The way I would handle the class is this.

I actually use Diet Mt. Dew Code Red. It tastes alot like a Cherry Limeade. I prefer the diet version to the regular Code Red.
