  1. Re:Limiting Internet Access on Is Wi-Fi Ruining College? · · Score: 2, Interesting

You can't just block the internet all the time. The only way to fix it, is to automatically restrict wifi access to the local intranet during the times you are scheduled for class. Although it would also mean no wifi if you skipped class. Honestly I think no tech solutions are best. In one of my classes anyone with a laptop had to sit in the 2nd to back row so their screens wouldn't annoy anyone else, and a TA would sit in the back row watching them to make sure they were taking notes and not surfing the web. It worked flawlessly.

  2. I can't believe a politician would speak out. on Stiffer Penalties for Copyright Violations · · Score: 1

How can anyone recommend jail time when a lot of the situations of copyright violations are young kids using an internet connection paid for by their parents or grandparents. Its bad enough that they fine these people, but jail time is absured. As long as the typical copyright violator is a regular person or child that doesn't know better, its wrong to do anything to them. I wish politicians would worry more about the people who steal the material, or host it through more technical sharing programs than those that host it on programs a 6 year old can use. You shut down one easily used sharing program and two more popup in its place. The real culprits are people on IRC and newsgroups, as these people know full well what they are doing is supposedly wrong, especially when they take something they got through irc or a newsgroup and post it on a bittorrent site or another sharing app. Basically what I am saying is go after the providers of the illegal content, not the downloaders. Yes bittorrent uploads when you download, but somewhere along the line there is someone who didn't download it, but just uploaded and that person is the violator.

They said they ask these questions: "Is it new?" Quinn asked. "Is it useful, which means does it work? Is it nonobvious? And is it described in such detail to enable someone skilled in that technology to make and use it based on the description that must accompany the application?" The bolded questions haven't been followed in any of the controversial concept patents. And those questions came from the patent office itself. Our patent office must be a bunch of dopers.

  4. Re:What ID is actually about on Using Copyrights To Fight Intelligent Design · · Score: 1

ID isn't a theory. A theory is a well tested hypothesis with actual proof supporting it. ID is just a hypothesis which cannot be tested and therefore can not be called anything near a theory. ID supporters like to generalize the meaning of theory to confuse people into thinking ID is reasonable. But in a scientific sense ID is a joke. Theories can be proven. They are not laws because they cannot be proven 100%. In science 99% isn't good enough to call something a law.

"Given the money we have available, you could really go on the cheap and get one of those case/PSU combo bargains - but we would advise against it." Because those combos come with cases, and their gameing rig is just going to sit on a table, because its a l33t gaming rig. Also what is the point in a 20 dollar dvd-rom when a dvd burner is 40 bucks.

Over at Purdue Lafayette, I used the IR ones in my physics class. They never had a problem recording answers and worked really well in my opinion, but now they are migrating to radio devices that do that same thing. Lots of other classes are starting to use them also. To me they suck because teachers only use them to force students to go to class. I am paying the tuition, If I can get an A and not go to class, owe well for the teacher.

I have mounted a fan at the front of my case right in front of three drives. For those with cases that have front fans right in front of their hard drives, they already get this improvement. My case lacked a front fan mount, so I made one. But lots of people have cases with front fans in front of hard drives. This kind of improvement I'm sure has been done by many people. Nothing new, except using an L bracket rather than mounting the fan in the front of the case. I guess this is a solution for those with cases that lack front fan mounts.
