Beg to differ. The British Empire was a physical entity and sure it was MUCH bigger than the US's physical empre has ever been. The US Empire is a cultural one and basically encompasses the globe. The similarity between the two is that they are/were both driven by commerce.
The major difference is that the British felt they had a morale obligation to look after the people in their empire: in a paternalistic manner. In contrast the US feels not even the slightest obligation, moral or otherwise, to its Empire.
I had a quick read of that article and the two sides can be summarised as:
GNU/Linux: "Credit where credit is due please" and "Linux is inaccurately applied".
Linux: "It's the term commonly used therefore we shouldn't change it".
Have to admit Linus' quote did make him appear a right little shit.
Tsk, tsk. AAC and MP3 are open: anyone can license them. Just because you have to pay doesn't make a standard not-open.
Now if you said that none of them are Free as in speech and Beer you'd be right. But let's face it the only free audio codec is Ogg Vorbis and that's basically limited to a tiny niche. Adopting Ogg really would mean Sony's new player was doomed to be stillborn.
If ignorance is bliss you must be incredibly content.
iPods play MP3 and AAC. The only time you have to use DRM encumbered AAC (PlayFair) is on tracks you buy from iTunes Music store: and even then it's straight forward to convert them to MP3 or burn them to a CD.
So your comparison is completely false. Perhaps next time you should ask your Mummy to check your facts before you post?
Are you a moron? You quote "becase they can be mistaken for numbers or another letter" and then ask which number U can be confused with? Well duh U and V (V being a letter) and Z and 2.
"Yeah we invited the local neighbourhood watch over so they could let us know whether they had issues with us burgalirising a few of our homes. Boy were we pissed when they reported us to the Police and we were all arrested. That's the last time I invite them"- Bill "Respect" Moroney.
If something is a illegal (and causing radio interference is and the BPL companies know it: they've been told often enough) then it's a crime: the fact that they invited the people affected along to watch doesn't change that fact and they should expect to be told to stop and be punished for it.
I'm incredibly glad to hear this. BPL has the potential to kill ham radio (and actually lot's of other HF radio services) as it uses HT powerlines that were not intended to carry HF signals and act as really excellent antenna (in fact the US Navy uses them to transmit extremly low frequency/long wavelength signlas to its submerged subs! So we know they work as antenna!)
I'm also glad the FCC isn't actually as big a patsy of the BPL industry as it first appeared. Cheers to the FCC and let's hope this is the first nail in the coffin of a truly bad idea.
As an aside: I hope this discourages the power industry muppets in the UK from trying the same thing.
Oh for crying out loud- you're the one that needs to get your facts straight!
First- MacOS had this feature LONG before Konfabulator was even a twinkle in Arlo and his fellow whingers' eye. So in fact Arlo ripped-off Apple: how low has he sunk: not only does he rip Apple off he whinges about it!
Second- It's an obvious piece of functionality to include in the GUI (in fact so obvious Apple did it a long time ago). It's not like, say, a Web browser which is separate.
Third- konfabulator sucks. Sorry to all you fan bois but it does. I've used it on my 15" PB and a) there are only 2 useful widgets (weather, which isn't actually that useful) and UK train information (which will be useless to me come tomorrow when I start a new job that does require a train ride). But the real killer is the amount of screen space these marginally useful chunks of clutter take up.
Fourth- Widget is an old name, both in general parlance and specifically referring to pieces of GUI. It's certainly not something invented by Arlo (Christ his ego must be truly over-inflated if he thinks so) in fact it wouldn't surprise me if tha's yet another thing that the konfabulator team stole from Apple!
If it hadn't been him, it'd had been the next one to bother mentionning(sic) it to an ignorant journalist
you're right! And damn that Einstein the over-rated git: I'm sure if he hadn't mentioned relativity someone else would have: and people think he was a genius tsk!
It's only common knowledge and common sense once someone has said it!
I'd second the recommendation for Space Empires IV. I have a copy still sitting on my PC and I play it occassionally. It reminds me a lot of the really early Star Trek games: you know the ones where your ship is an asterix! But the depth (technology tree, colonies, space stations you can build etc etc) is much greater. A good game. And doubly nice because it doesn't require the CD to be in the drive to play.
Good grief! Do not touch Hearts of Iron or EU (I or II) with a ten-foot barge-pole.
EU was a good strategy game (it's based on a boardgame of the same name) but the implementation was appaulling and it is incredibly bugged.
EU II was a marginal improvement (really an expansion for which you had to pay full price) but even more buggy and the game balance was even more screwed: and don't get me started on their historical events. These "happen" regardless of what's going on in the game. For example, playing Spain I had several bouts of hyperinflation brought on by the "Spanish Armada" event. This despite the fact that not only had I not launched the Armad: I wasn't even at war with England, in fact they were an ally !!
Hearts of Iron though is the crowning pile of crap. EU at least had the advantage of some play balance as a result of basing it on an existing board game. Hearts of Iron is just awful, it is so unbalanced and unplayable and plain silly. For example it is easy to get an event, playing as the USA, that sees the USA suddenly switch to Communist. Yeah right.
Medieval:Total War is just so much better than any of Paradox's offerings.
Yeah blah blah blah and I bet your Pinto is as good as any S-class Mercedes and flying Economy rather than First is just as good because you get there at the same time. Heard it all before and it doesn't wash.
By that logic, an MMORPG is glorified IRC with graphics?
Oh no, it's much worse than that: you get *groups* of hormonal-teenagers acting all important because they are the deputy-assistant-junior-under-vice-leader(acting) of some uber-1337 guild

But why would anyone want to?

Tell Howard Stringer to make the cheque payable to CASH.

$5 ? Was it even worth bothering to bring such a "succesful" site back up ?
I was going to moderate this but I couldn't find "-1, self-righteous" in the list.
Yeah and tell that to Stac, whose disc compression software Microsoft literally (not just the idea, the actual code) stole.
Are you a moron? You quote "becase they can be mistaken for numbers or another letter" and then ask which number U can be confused with? Well duh U and V (V being a letter) and Z and 2.
Fuckwit.
THIS is one of the reasons I'm prepared to pay a premium for Apple kit.

The article got it right: Our beloved slashdot editors didn't RTFA (or even the headline which contained his age) before posting the story!
... and poster rants about others not having a clue.

Ha ha ha! Which moron with to much political-correctness stuck up his arse modded this troll??
Or maybe it's targeted at Queers: they have more style than us straight guys.

There are 3rd party add-ons that allow you to record voice on your iPod. Check any recent Mac magazine for the ads or even the Apple store.
And the kicker? You have to re-activate it if you plug in a different set of headphones.
