I wonder if the RIAA's 'cost of piracy' numbers fall under any of the new Sarbanes/Oxley rules for Financial Reporting. I would love to see the proof of those numbers.
A relationship is about comprimises. Knowing what I can or can not get away with is vital. I know which battles to fight, which not to even bother mentioning, and which to sink back into my cave in defeat before they even start.
Funny thing is that it also applies in my job. Being a system analyst and project manager takes the same set of skills. Seeing things from someone else's view point, explaining your view point, and shopping for something better then what you have if it doesn't meet the basic needs.
I solved this issue with my wife by being sneaky. I left out my gba sp with a certain game in it that happens to rhyme with hokemon. She is now so hooked, that I had to buy myself a new gba sp and am looking into getting a gc with coliseum on it.
Thing is, she is into horses. I do not ride - something about two bad experiences with horses. Therefore, normally I get to sit and watch her ride; watch the horse eat grass, etc... I just game then. I helped the owners hook up WIFI (with WPA thank you very much) all over their land. You can pick up a signal any were. Therefore, I do my gaming in the middle of a grass pasture watching a horse eat grass.
If you get a woman that wants all of you free time and will not give you any 'useless' gaming time, you need to sit her down and talk with her. It is your hobby. Point out her 'useless' hobbies that she drags you along on. Be honest but fair with her. If she still throws a fit, I would guess it would be time to start shopping for a new one.
Let us face it. There is no security advantage from the average induhvidual setting anything up technology wise. My neighbors that run WIFI are all open, only one uses a different SSID then the default, and it is the family name.
Configuring security is not easy. Given the fact that the networking vendors have been all for wireless in every home, they have to target the lowest common denomiator in setting up thier technology. It is the nature of the beast. This is why viruses are so prevelent in this day and age.
Maybe Fedex Ground could use this to find out what my house looks like. They keep delivering to the wrong house, even though I have the street number over the door and on the curb. They probably wouldn't be able to find my house to take the picture though.
Easiest solution is to keep a fence around the base at a significant distance to protect security. Then post a sign on it that reads 'If you cross this fence, you will be shot and killed.' People will cross the fence and the average iq of the US will go up a fraction of an iq point.
This use to be a big IRS tactic. Go after the guys without the funding to take you on. If the recording industry sued someone with the money and the inclination (sp?) to take them on through a significant series of appeals, then I think that the laws would be changed.
Also, Congress needs to hold hearings on this. The General Accounting Office [GAO], the investigative brance of the Congress, helped get the IRS inline. Now, my personnal feeling about anything being done is that it would be unlikely. (I mean, come on, we call them Congress instead of Progress.) But, just maybe, someone will get a clue.
The RIAA is trying civil court because they know that they can use the 'perponderance of the evidence' to thier own advantage. If they think they are right, let see some criminal charges. Gutless wonders
By creating this paper trail of responsibility, the work on Linux will be externally auditable. This will help reassure big business that they will not legally shaft themselves.

Remember, free is only free when you consider support and hardware costs.
You can have the project manager that is fresh out of school. I will take the 50+ year old who flew attack helicopters for the army and was a divisional training officer, with 10+ years IT experiance, an MBA, and having ran his own successful business.
Let's see who's project will fail first. I can train techical know-how.
Microsoft is well known for their great hiring practices. I know quite a few of thier employees and they all are some of the best in the fields they specialise in. MS is pretty good at weeding out the chaff.
Disclamer: My brother is a senior manager at ipswitch
We use What's Up Gold in my job to analyse and diagnose the network. It diagnosed a looping issue that was taking down the network that our network admins said was not happening. They had a router incorrectly configured. It is a very good tool to cover all of the network monitering/auditing tasks.
Sun's biggest mistake was killing Microsoft's JVM. I work in application support and Sun's JVM sucks. Each vendor requires a different version of a JVM and older java applets are not compatable with the newer JVMs. All Sun did was convence more programmers to adopt.NET.
Sun isn't very stable as a company since their stock is now JUNK_FLAG enabled. Hopefully 2B will help their stock, but Sun is famous for screwing that up.
Sincerely, Nathan
Remember, if IBM wrote JAVA it would be called C++
Let us be honest here, even if this RFC seems to have the BS_FLAG enabled, it is a real theat due to the fact that many of the actions of these organisations lact due process.

I understand six languages. They are English, L33t, Hex, Binary, ASCII Code, and Dumbass.
It probably has to do with the amount of money Lucas is spending on Episode III. He must have a significant burn rate. It also could be an attempt to generate interest after the abysmal response to Episode II.
It depends on your company. You might of signed a form that states that the company owns whatever you write, even if it is job related or not. Depends on the company, usually the larger companies are more draconian about it.
On the reverse side, my company does not require any such statement to be signed. So, technically, I own all my code. Should make any layoffs fun around here.
'What? No severance package? I will make you a deal on my code. Either that or you remove it.'
It is an extream example but entirely possible to happen.
It is an interesting problem that faces IT. The hospital I work at uses a mainframe on another site. We are planning to return it to on-site because we had downtime because the company moved their mainframe 'just because' from one side of Atlanta to another.
There is also the fun of who really owns your data? If the site just gets shutdown, how will you get data? (I know they should give it to you in tapes, but then you must find something they will work on.)
NPR has a serious fault. It is run mostly by Universities. Our local university is the home of our NPR station. Since the cheep administrators are unwilling to step away from a very long standing rule that is attached to funding, no rock and roll. The kids who run the station can't make anything towards their taste.
Of course. Also because of the Academia bent of NPR, their other programs tend to be so into left field that none of the talk radio heads around here really likes listening to them. (We refer listening to NPR as listening to the Enemy) They have few jazz listeners, a few classical listeners, but not much else.
The school could use it to have maybe a weekly local show, inspiring new talent, but then they would have to find other funding. That job is done by the local Radio Network, and let's not get into thier proclivities.
Since DeCSS is an implementation of a mathamatical concept, and is not the ONLY way of ripping data off of a DVD, isn't this a way of squashing one's competitors? Main purpose of DeCSS is the viewing of the DVD, not the copy of it. So, if DeCSS is not permitted by the Courts, doesn't that setup a monopoly? Where is the FTC when you need them.
Only way this would be a valid argument if the equation was copyrighted and it was a copyright infringement case. (Which makes me think of copyrighting A + B = C.... Hummmmm)

No, no, no. It needs to be more clear.
'Use of deadly force authorized...' Hell, it should say 'We will give the guy that puts two in your head a promotion and a weekend pass.

Profit increase by prosecuting law/Cost of prosecuting law = Fiscal benefit of law
I would love to see if the MPAA/RIAA groups profit off of these laws, or if the morons just make fools of themselves.

The MAC is owned by Belkin. Seems to be related to wireless routers.
The phone is a Siemens Model S55 S30880-S5720 approvial for sale Finland.
Got the VIN on the car? ;-)
Reminders that I am that old... Rush, the band not the guys, released their first album and I turn 30. Hand me my cain.

Not like they have screwed traffic enough around Augusta, GA.
They are working on quite a few roads in the area. (Anyone who has driven on I-20 around Augusta would understand)
Still, they can't seem to figure out the flooding in front of my work. Oh, well. I guess I can swim to see the new robot.
