Given the definition of Low Earth Orbit and the size of Australia (the country in which I live), I regularly get more bizarre 'local' contacts than this.
Until my contract ended, I was recently working for a large IT company (50K people worldwide).
The company did a sales demo recently, and one of the main concerns of the client was that 'we don't use open source in any way'. The client was shit scared of anything to do with 'open source' because they believed that if any were used for anything, suddenly they had to give away all their proprietary secrets to the world.
I tried to explain the differences between the licenses to my boss (BSD vs. GPL vs. Apache etc) and what the GPL really meant (If you don't distribute you have no problem) but since it was my leaving do and people just wanted to drink beer, I don't think anyone was listening.
Stories like this about Telstra just pander to the FUDists.
though I've bought an iPad for my mom because it really is the most pain-free option for her.
Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a WINNER!!
That right there is the reason why Lion is going to succeed.
My mum uses OSX (I gave her my old iMac) and my dad sticks with Windows. They both get confused by multiple windows overlapping each other.
The only reason I haven't yet replaced them with iPads is that the iPad screen is still to small for them see easily.
Place the iPad functionality behind a large screen and I will immediately replace both my parents computers and never again have to answer silly questions like 'why is half the writing off the screen?'
If Apple lock it down entirely, I won't be pissed off, I will just quietly move back to Linux (maybe running in a VMWare session on my iMac. Aaah, you didn't think of that did you?)
You could make that assumption and then type up a post discussing the confusion that would result.
Or you could RTFA (I know, new here etc...) and see the bit that says... "The lower row omits the AMD logo, so PC makers shipping Intel-based systems will be able to avoid the oil-and-water combo of Intel and AMD branding, if they wish." ... and save yourself all that trouble.
I'm waiting for some political scandal to surface that somehow involves an actual gate (maybe a property boundary access dispute or something).
All the commentators harping on about 'gategate' should be worth a few laughs.
50% worse is 50 times 1% worse, which is what gp was referring to by "#2" (and presumably what his Royal Steveiness was hoping people would misinterpret his statement as.)
This irony is actually quite well known in another context.
Giving anti-depressants to suicidal people makes the suicide rate go UP.
The current thinking is that many depressed people are simply lacking motivation to do anything, including suicide.
Giving them pills that increases their sense of 'self-determination' and 'will' actually gives them the motivation to finally getting around to committing suicide.
I have a bunch of hard drives formatted with ReiserFS, with movies on, from ~2002.
They are now basically unreadable.
Don't use a format pioneered by an axe murderer.

Argh! A snake! A snake!
Snake... Snake...
Oh, it's a snake!
That's six times you have used the words "lock-in", and now you also mentioned DRM!
What exactly is it that you are talking about?
It has always been possible to put your own MP3's on an iPod and it would play them just fine.
The iTunes Music Store used to put DRM in downloaded songs, but they stopped doing that ages ago.
Are you referring to the fact that you have to use iTunes to get stuff onto an iPod? Well cry me a river. Every iPod comes with a copy of iTunes for either OS X or Windows. Granted that this leaves Linux users such as yourself out in the cold, but Linux has what, 2% market share. I hardly think catering for 98% of computer users could really be described as "lock-in".
This is an honest question. What do you mean when you keep going on about lock-in?
Maybe in 6 months when normal people get a look at one they will see it as the same 'magical' do-nothing-special device that the iPod and iPhone turned out to be.
Yeah, and then the iPad will be a dismal failure and sink into obscurity just like the iPod and iPhone did!
Wait a minute... which alternative reality are you from again?
I think it would be more accurate to say that it's a gigantic iPod Touch.
And yes, I believe that an iPod Touch is fundamentally different from a netbook.
I used to have a netbook. I ended up giving it to my Dad. It now sits on his shelf collecting dust.
I have an iPod Touch. It is plugged into my stereo and in use playing music even as I type this.
Not sure what you mean by that - I've been using USB3 external drives since last year,
And "last year" was like, what, 3 months ago? I have a USB3 port in my latest laptop, but I've yet to find anything to plug into it.
Unfortunately, the first EU-UK radio 'pictures.' it delivered was this.
That said, Egypt has a decent sized Christian minority (15%) that I think does OK
True enough, given a fairly liberal interpretation of OK.

Or just right click and 'open in new tab' which is what I did and why I didn't understand what blair1q was talking about.

No! Iron Condor asked for the list! (I think, I still get confused by /. layout)
Unfortunately yes. There are still morons waiting to be fleeced

The irony of this article amused me :-)

you go and shoot one off.
Badum-tsch!
Get a brewery to start giving them away with every case of beer sold.
Nice one!
You've made my day
(pronounce it like you're coughing then spitting)
That's usually how I pronounce "Windows".
FTR, the correct format is "Sir Tim" or "Sir Tim Berners-Lee"; Knights are referred to by their First name or Fullname but never just their Surname.
Captain Pedantic approves of this comment, and is reminded of this.

That's a bit of tautological recursion.
Don't blame /. This is exactly how it is written in TFA (I know, I know.. I must be new here etc).
Although since the article author is Michael Cooney and the story was submitted by "coondoggie" I suspect they are one and the same.

It's a gigantic iPhone without the phone.
I think it would be more accurate to say that it's a gigantic iPod Touch.

See the difference?
Before, the situation was simple.
Everything not binary-represented-information related used base-10.
Everything binary-represented-information related (computing related, bandwidth related etc) used base 2,
According to Wikipedia, big bandwidth is measured in base 10.
I guess it was not so simple after all.
