Praise Cid! I quit FFXI some time ago because of many the issues others have stated, for me it was waiting for hours as a RDM/WHM or WHM/RDM for a group and not being able to keep up time commitment wise. But these fixes are things I wish would have happened while I was still playing. That level cap (and the associated item limit) kept me from finishing a few quests because I simply didn't have the storage.

Again, the difference in behavior is striking. We spend all of our time trying to get the girls to stop being polite and actually GO GET THE BALL. For the boys, we spend all of our time trying to keep them from fighting and to actually GO GET THE BALL.

At that age, they KNOW how their gender is supposed to behave and they've been taught that behavior, either intentionally or subconsciously. Kind of like if you take a kid, tell them to play sports all the time with their brother and never hand them a book or encourage them to read on their own, they simply won't be much interested in reading. In school they'll be the kid who's favorite class is recess and gym, who can't sit still, and who has to be forced to read.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out that some, but not all transgendered folks have some kind of IS condition that's enough to "mess with" the biology enought to "mess with" their gender identity, but not the sort of thing that makes ambiguous genitalia.

In geek speak. I think some transgendered folks are the equivalent to the "Planetouched" in D&D, but in this case "IS touched". But I am careful where I say that, because relations between the Transgendered and IS communitys can get heated.

However what layman oriented info from the scientific studies I have seen on this sort of thing has been inconclusive. I personally believe that Nature and Nurture play a role in gender development.

    Sponges, kids are like sponges.

Suppose you give a boy and a girl a doll, which child is more likely to be taught "how" to "properly" play with the doll, whether by intent or not? Which child will be rewarded consciously and subconsciously for "properly" playing with that doll?

How does the little girl in your example "know" how to use a bottle, because she saw it being used and was probably encouraged to learn about how it was used. In a similar way, the little boy might have been subtly or not so subtly encouraged to hang around with Dad while the dad is watching the History or Military channel while the little girl is encouraged to hang with Mom, while she is baking a cake.

I don't think your crazy, but I do think you're not seeing the subtle ways society "trains" gender, or how you might have done so without even realizing it.

I'm not saying it's all nurture though, I'm a "Nature + Nurture" kind of person.

My first exposure to Linux was on the Playstation 2. I remember one time of needing to edit some HTML for some reason, which I normally don't need to do that often, I'm not a coder of any kind. So I was wondering how to easily do it and was resigned to doing it in vim and testing the HTML in whatever minimalistic browser I was using for most of my browsing on the PS2 and then I remembered the Mozilla Suite composer (by that time there were community builds of the Moz Suite for the PS2). It made what I needed to do easy and got the job done. It was useful enough that I kept a Moz Suite (and later on, Seamonkey) build on my PS2 just for the composer. Thanks for reminding me of that, because I memory was jogged enough to do a "sudo yum install seamonkey" on my YDL6 install on my PS3.

If you're looking for a WYSIWYG HTML editor other than Seamonkey composer, there's KompoZer (a fork of Nvu which was supposed to be the HTML editing accompaniment to Firefox/Thunderbird), which I haven't tried.

The MGS4 80GB PS3 bundles that you can still find on the shelves are backwards compatible. That's the one I have. I've played PS1 and PS2 games on it. There's a fuckton of good PS1 games, though you can't find them in the usual usual used game haunts anymore around here, don't know why since any PS2 or PS3 can play them.

    Here's a short list:

MegaMan Legends 1/2 and The Adventures of Tron Bonne: 3D Mega Man games totally unlike the 2D Mega Man's. They're like DOOM + Tomb Raider + RPG elements + Mega Man.

DOOM: The PS1 version (which is basically DOOM 1 and 2 combined) is graphically enhanced and has slightly different levels than the PC version. The downside is that the music is ambient and NOT the traditional DOOM music.

Diablo: Slight graphical enhancements, but the animation is choppier, probably because it runs faster. The Daddy of all those PS2 Diablo clones. It's the same as the PC version except for the controls and lack of online play, but the same screen multiplayer rocks. I find that the comfort level of this version is better than the PC version, I can play this version for much much longer without hand fatique compared to the clicky clicky PC version.

X-COM: I couldn't get into the base management stuff, but the turned based combat is very fun. Supports the PSone mouse too.

Quake II: probably the best FPS on the PS1.

Final Fantasy foo: games 1 and 2 (Final Fantasy Origins) 4 and Chrono Trigger (Final Fantasy Chronicles, 5 and 6 (Final Fantasy Anthology) and 7, 8, and 9 are available as PSone games. 9 is best played on the PS2 anyway because it seriously benefits from the PS2's ability to texture smooth and fast load PS1 games.

    Final Fantasy Tactics

Azure Dreams: a monster raising/breeding game crossed with Rogue/Nethack of all things.

Spyro the Dragon 1/2/3: Easily the best 32 bit platformers simply because they have a much better camera and controls than Mario 64 does.

Caslevania Symphony of the Night: The first Metroidvania game, also available via PSN for the PS3 and PSP.

Persona series: These games are probably a bit more PC RPG influenced than other PS1 RPG's. They're set in the modern world.

Future Cop LAPD: a simple but fun shooter in the "Strike" tradition

Darkstone: Yes it's a port of a PC Diablo clone, but since it's fully 3D it is probably better suited to the PS1 than diablo is, even if it's not as good of a game. It also hugely benefits from the PS2's fast loading ability. Don't play it on anything less than an S-Video connection to your TV, because the fonts will be hard to read otherwise. Haven't tried it on my PS3 to see if it benefits from the PS3's smoothing and upscaling ability.

Crash Team Racing: best cart racer on the PS1.

Few people are going to buy keyboards for their consoles - as is already well demonstrated.

Demonstrated how? I had a keyboard/mouse hooked up to my PS2 and the moment I got my PS3 that keyboard/mouse was moved to it and stays connected. There's only two console MMORPGS, Final Fantasy XI, and Everquest Online Adventures and I've played them both. It was rare to see someone without a keyboard and when you did encounter one, they always said, "Yes yes, I know, I'm getting a keyboard soon." People interested in playing MMORPGS on their console know they're going to want a keyboard so it's a non-issue.

Of course, in ten or twenty years, the difference between PC controllers and Console controllers will be negligible.

10 or 20 years? there's no difference now, and hasn't been for years. I remember when C64's used Atari 2600 joysticks. I remember when the first NES/Genesis/SNES style PC gamepads hit the shelves and then later on the Dual Shock clones for PC's. The current official Gaming for Windows controller is a wired Xbox 360 pad!

It's not all that on the PS3 either. I'd have liked to have more hotslots for spells and stuff. A smaller typeface size since I play it in 720p. A few of the tweaks I hear BTMod provides for you folks, like that enhanced map. The ability to delete spells. And the ability to use the keyboard for things other than text entry. Did you know that any game that uses the PS3's standard text entry API, which oblivion does for naming spells and items, can use USB keyboards for entering that text? Would have been nice to assign certain functions to the Function keys, or more hotslots! Heck even usng one of the shoulder buttons as a "shift button", most likely L1, would have helped.

That said, I do enjoy the game.
