While I'm receptive to what you're saying I have a certain issue with the same person who praises OSS and Google praising Apple and their known anti-competitive sentiment. Hell, we had yet another major story about it today.
Also note, I never said "anti Google". There is a gulf of difference between being anti-something and not being pro-something. This kind of attitude brings me to say fanboism. Simply saying "I'd mod you down for being anti-Google" with no real consideration of the content screams fanboi to me. Are you seriously saying that Google doesn't fumble the ball? Are you saying that there aren't moves done by Google that don't leave you thinking "slippery slope"? To say otherwise is fanboism. There isn't a large entity that has made the front page of Slashdot that hasn't done something that's between lunkheaded to down right intentionally user unfriendly (to use a term).
Sure, Google has brought lots of positive stuff to the table. So has everyone else for the most part. It doesn't mean that companies that I think are bringing something positive to the community are beyond reproach. That's just blind dogmatism and, frankly, it stinks.
You may have a dim view of me after this post but that's simply the way I see it. No one and no company is 100% solid. The bias on Slashdot makes it very hard to bring the failings of these entities to light and for a supposed scientific community that's not only foolish but also dangerous.
With only hiveminded thinkers left, like any monopoly, this site has stagnated.
You God damned shill!
Seriously, I agree with you. It's getting old that you can't post an honest opinion that isn't pro-OSS, pro-Google or pro-Apple without getting the beat down with the overrated mod.
I'm sure my protest falls on deaf ears but it really has changed my outlook on how and what I contribute to Slashdot. I've noticed a couple of stories recently that I thought would make good Slashdot material and I simply will not submit them since I think the site has lost so much value. Not to mention that I also lost my mod points for not doing the Slashdot goosestep.
I don't blame the trolls anymore. Sometime I do a bit of the trolling myself since honest and well thought out posts end with the same moderation in a world where not being dogmatic makes you "just another shill".
My guess is that you're not the target audience. And considering the number of people who have gone on to make a career of it my guess is that they have enough of an audience to worry about it.
And that's not to be rude but let's face facts, MST3K (for all it's brilliance and majesty) simply isn't a serious contender for a two hour slot on any of the larger stations today. It's an extremely sad statement but it's all too true.
I will agree with whomever that Sci-Fi and Comedy Central did their best to kill the series by playing it for 8-10 hours a day but if the viewers were there they could have continued to do it. There simply isn't enough of an audience that can't ingest this much MST3K and still be happy about it when it comes on the next day.
The worst of it all is considering the kinds of shows that have lived and thrived on these same two stations... I don't demand high entertainment 24-7 but Jesus, it's getting really bad out there. I can't even remember the last time I had an original Comedy Central show on and I can't recall the last time I had Sci-Fi on at all.
Just like the article in question, all reviews are an opinion and nothing more. Are you really going to sit and dissect someones opinion to make you feel good about yourself? If you are you need to step away from the keyboard and get a life.
In my moderate-gamer life I can think of a few 100-score games but I don't get in a huff when other people come by and tell me that "American McGee's Alice blows" or "The Thief series is overrated".
Why do we have to have this eternal debate over whether a quantifiable score can be applied to an opinion? If you don't like it simply don't use it.
Not to say that the experience offered by games isn't worthwhile but I find myself doing a lot of reloads too since I like to see if I can do stupid stuff and get away with it.
When the next administration (or the next one after that) starts committing really outrageous abuses, I hope like hell it's a Democrat so I can listen to the Republicans screaming their heads off.
Thank you for buying into party lines. When will you see people as people and not a party member? As long as you keep buying into this ridiculous two-party culture nothing is going to really change.
And if that is too much to ask of you, what are *you* going to do if the Democrats take office and the abuse doesn't stop? Are you going to see it as something going dreadfully wrong or just shrug it off as being justifiable since it's sponsored by your little political crutch?
Not only have a lot of posters, thankfully, come in on the side of common sense as to why it shouldn't happen but I also ask why should it even happen on this level?
There are going to be a ton of asshats who are going to make plenty of promises that if we elect candidate X, or worse yet anyone from party Y, that the sun will come out, the flowers will bloom and we'll all since songs of joy as gold coins fall from the sky. The truth of the matter is that no single person in the seat of the president is going to be able to make the kinds of changes that most here seem to want even if he did have a strong understanding of the science behind the agenda. And this isn't even on the party level. Assuming that the single best human on the face of the planet suddenly was president for the next decade he or she would be so bogged down in the crap from previous administrations and the simpler side of political corruption that there would be little forward advancement.
Overall you're probably better off worrying about the state and state-held federal office seats in your little corner of the world as those votes count for more and will probably have a wider influence on your daily lives. And this isn't even to mention my own outlook on it: this is where the third parties need to get a foothold first.
In all honesty, being more in tune with state politics is going to get you more bang for your vote and the occasional session of letter* writing to your congressmen is probably more powerful of an influence than your vote for president ever will be.
* BTW: No, e-mail doesn't count. Buy a stamp you cheapskate.
I think you are making the mistake of comparing them when they have added value (content such as music and movies).
Not even. At least not on the DVD vs VHS aspect. I remember when 20 bucks for a video tape was the bargain bin price. Today you it's the norm for a new release DVDs.
It's the people hysterical about not being able to drive Hummers whose passions are being challenged most.
Everyone likes to think that their "side" of an argument is right and clearly thought out and they also like to think the other side is a bunch of raving idiots for not seeing things their way.
I agree with this. If he still thinks the data and the conclusions of that data are correct why would he pull it? If anything it gives creationists a stronger foothold in their argument.
If science can prove that creationists are wrong it must do it at all points or it provides a loophole for the creationists. The divine will of God is a harsh enough hurdle to overcome. Why are people cheering for a guy who is only making it harder for science to stand on it's own?
I really don't see it as off topic and maybe some people will ponder it. Sadly, the ISPs being of a limited number and thus easier to blow off the customers concerns (much like the two party system) will be solved much sooner. People are going to have to go through some very serious times to see why the political system needs some real competition before it changes.
We may be going through just such a problematic time when Britney, Paris and American Dance-A-Thon (or whatever the hell it's called) occupies less space on the front page of most "news" sites. I think we're a long way off.
It's so sad how badly the US Government is addicted to corporate contriubtions and Congress is too inept to actually do something about it.
Inept? That would be biting the hand that feeds!
You show me the elected politician who got to office on a state of federal level who didn't spend more on their campaign than they have been paid. You may find a couple but I doubt even that. As long as the American public keeps voting for the guy or gal with the most commercials on the TV this will not change. Grass roots movements have helped a few politicians get some support in the face of big money but I can't recall the last one who was able to go the extra mile on home made fliers and word of mouth.
it's ridiculous that we continue to desperately grasp for a few breadcrumbs from an administration that's blatantly in bed with big business.
I think you need to put your political affiliations aside if you simply want to point the finger at this administration as far as their track record on rights.
Sure, it's worse now than it has been in the memorable past but it seems that with each new administration, regardless if they be the jackass or the elephant, sells their candidates on bringing new change about instead of peeling back the layers of crap that the former administrations have done.
My question to the Democrats: Even if you get someone in the Whitehouse during the next election what are you going to do if they don't start repealing all of the crap that's gone on in the past 6+ years? Are you going to keep drinking the kool-aid?
The American political system simply does not have enough competition in it to provide real changes. Especially the changes we keep hearing people talk about on here.
I'd rather see a government that is hampered with infighting instead of one side of the fence simply pushing on the other just because they can.
The current political situation we find ourselves in goes back a long way. The big two parties are enjoying every minute of it regardless of wins and losses since you suckers keep coming back and buying more. The boycott of both parties by voting third party is the only way to send a clear message.
The powers that be have application needs that Linux simply can not duplicate. Not to mention we have a number of home brewed apps that would need to be reproduced. That in itself would take years.
Can't expect much from someone with an slashdot id of nearly a million.
Are we to expect more from someone without a UID? Or at least someone who can't be public about it?

Is this anything like The Last Starfighter?
*Ducks!*
There is no save-reload in real life.

Apple may not be a monopoly but they certainly act a lot more like one than Microsoft does.

Well, it is the truth. What did you expect? You're all vocabulary with no substance.
Because only corporations and Republicans are evil. The average guy on the street is honest and law abiding.
Are you new around here or something?

Both sides are normally wrong.

The amount of confirmation bias that people can exhibit when their passions are challenged is incredible.
Are you talking about the "humans caused global warming" crowd?
Where in the bible does it state that the earth is 6000 years old? Can you please quote this?
Well, let's see... oh! there's a notify of updates before installing option. Nice try though.

Um...quote me the post where he said he is running WSUS. Maybe another poster did but I think you got the wrong guy.
So that's why it's going to be cloudy over my area for the foreseeable future?
Never fails.
They just gather data, and when they find your 'how_to_make_a_bomb.doc' be sure it will phone home.
Care to tell me anyone that this has happened to or are you just putting a whimsical spin on things?
