Dunno, where your goin... it typically takes me about a minute to find a good hd rip of any movie that is out on blu-ray, etc. Just look at the stats of a torrent before you download it and look more closely at what your downloading so you don't get a foreign version of it. It's really not that hard at all.

  2. Free Wikipedia access on Sony Takes Aim At Amazon's Kindle · · Score: 1

Actually the only thing the kindle has going for it (as far as I am concerned) is the free wireless wikipedia access. I think that is pretty damn cool. Without that feature I'd buy it for $150.

  4. Re:Too late in the game on Sony Unveils PS3 Motion Controller · · Score: 1

I wouldn't be so sure... The ps3 is what still $300-$400 dollars (traditionally the early adopter price)? It won't even be a true mass market product until it gets to the $200 dollar phase. This round of consoles is really unique because of the disparity between the consoles in terms of processing power and also the massive cost on the higher end units (PS3 cost over $800 to produce at release). There is a good chance that the new nintendo system that may come out in a few years may be just as powerful if not a little less then the 4-5 year old ps3.

  5. Stage 6 Bandwidth on DivX Pulls Plug on Stage6 · · Score: 1

The videos on stage6 also clearly used several times more bandwidth then youtube. The latest h.264 in flash is not any worse then divx. Infact, divx has been lagging for a while now and the only reason stage6 looked so much better was because it was far more bandwidth intensive. The operating cost of stage6 is going to be much more then youtube per view.

  6. The PS3 on Samsung Sued Over "Defective" Blu-ray Player · · Score: 1

I'm still surprised to see people not buy the cheaper $399 ps3 over these players. It has far better hardware then these standalone players (hard drive, etc.). Everyone for the love of god don't make this mistake. I've been telling people to get the ps3 for the last 6 months if they want a blu-ray player, until standalone 2.0 players that come out at half the cost of a ps3 (doubtful it will happen anytime soon) there is no reason to get a standalone.

Theres also ebayers that buy up every single Wii as soon as they pop-up. Most sellers take pictures of their stockpiles of the wii system and show them on ebay.

I wonder how much the scarcity is playing into the popularity of the wii (omg it's not available it must be awesome!). That might be another reason for nintendo to not be producing any more units then they had per month. If it is true it has to be working since the hype for the system is the strongest since release.

I'll give you pricey but thats about it. Most people have the ps2 anyway so it's not too bad for those wanting the cheap unit. I'm still waiting for games.

Mod-up parent please, first accurate post I've seen here. People who think HDMI cables are immune to signal loss don't know what they are talking about. If your unsure of what you need do a little research before you head out, my favorite place to shop is still monoprice.

  13. Half-Life 2 on Bungie Explains Halo 3's Resolution · · Score: 1

Unfortunately halo 3 already looks dated compared to half-life 2 and I spent $200 on my vid card last year. I often play them on the same 37 inch flat hdtv that I play xbox 360 games. Comparing good pc games (even 2 year old ones like half-life 2) is kind of moot, the 360 doesn't even come close.

Multiplayer gameplay is a different issue but then and again it's a ton of fun playing counterstrike source with a much greater flexibility in terms of teams. However it can get hectic since you can die far too easily in a game like CS.

  14. Re:Interesting idea, but they are ignoring the Wii on LittleBigPlanet Could 'Move Consoles' For PlayStation 3 · · Score: 1

I have to respectfully disagree. Having a family game isn't enough. It needs to be on a family budget too, $299 or less. I'm sure at $399 the ps3 will move quite a bit of systems (unless that version is severely hamstrung) but it won't be for simply family entertainment. They need more enticing titles, I don't remember what is coming out for the ps3 this holiday but without a combination of A-List titles and a nice price drop they won't be moving many systems.

However if there is a price drop in japan and White Knight comes out over there this could boost sales significantly in that country.

  16. Better graphics != worse gameplay on Real-time Raytracing For PC Games Almost A Reality · · Score: 2, Insightful

I don't see why most slashdotter's think that if a company does decent graphics they cannot have good gameplay. Sure there is a lot of crap games that come out but this was true in the past too. Graphics have been going up but I can't say that gameplay has necessarily been going down completely. There were plenty of genesis/nintendo games I simply didn't find to be fun. In any case improved graphics in the last ten years has allowed for more diverse, immersing, and heart wrenching games.

PS2+ games are the same but with a slight increase in learning curve (most older games you can just pickup immediately and it was a matter of skill and timing mastery to complete, newer systems usually employ more complicated but still fun gameplay). It has great games and crappy games, just all the graphics are 3d and generally better looking. Some dev's just don't understand how to make an enjoyable game.

Also better graphics allows for different games and more complex games. Imagine if you were limited to the graphics of let's say early tetris/pac-man (i wonder why we only remember a handful of games from the era =P hint hint*) or even more primitive like the first version of pong. It's safe to say if we were limited to the most basic levels of gaming for the last 30 years the market wouldn't be as large, appealing, or diverse as it is now.

Racing simulator's, cinematic rpgs, cinematic fps's (or any fps for that matter), simply wouldn't be possible. With pong lvl graphics yo'd be limited to one dot as a target and maybe different colored squares to target. Simply not anywhere near as immersive. Imagine when Resident Evil started the survival horror genre. I remember playing it at night on my PC (RE: 2) and just being completely freaking spooked during certain parts. I don't think ultra basic midi music and little blurbs of pixels could ever accomplish that.

  17. Horrible Link on Inside the Third Gen iPod Nano · · Score: 0

I just went through that link and they shot NOTHING down with reason. It's mostly a rant by the overzealous mac owner, his only reasons were that isuppli's work didn't seem to make sense based on his preconceived notions and poor comparisons between apple's company wide reported margins and specific product margins reported by isuppli.

For example, he was simply refusing to believe that the iphone cost $286 to produce and the price of the unit was $599. Yet, the massive price cut just one month after he posted his article/rant makes isuppli's numbers seem credible. $399 for the same 8 gig iphone just months after release, damn right apple was making a massive profit.

That site makes no attacks on isuppli's methodology or process as the site owner is probably unaware of how they do things. iSuppli has a great reputation from manufacturers and they're numbers usually stand to reason.

Reading that website post iphone price drop makes it seem even more ridiculous in it's criticisms of isuppli.

Most phones even free ones released in the last 3-4 years go into a sleeplike mode called "standby" when not in active use or when you shut it closed (physically like if it's a flip phone). I'll bet your current phone is the same, it uses minimal power and can still receive calls unless you have a brick from 6 years ago.

My samsung A is the same and it takes 2-3 seconds of holding the end button to turn off.

I call bullshit, the gp was correct in stating that divx is not nearly as good H.264. Infact comparing them is ludicrous. I haven't used divx in two years for encoding but I do come across the format often while consuming content (like blizzard's starcraft two trailer). From what i remember two years ago xvid has been a slight step up from divx. Even at 1.4 gigs (two cd's) dvd-rips didn't look particularily good contrary to lots of opinions where people somehow deemed it to be almost as good as dvd quality.

XVID still can't do full dvd quality at 1.4 gigs about H.264 has come ridiculously close for me. Also it is possible to get nearly two hour films in 720p easily in a 4.7 gb disc. Trying the same thing in divx as I had in the past was horrid just like blizzard's trailer (the divx compression issues are highly noticeable).
