The promised implementation of upscaling in that old ps3 article has already been done like two months ago. Both DVD's and older ps2 games are upscaled.
While the ps2 had 1,000,000 units it's first weekend the ps3 had a few thousand and it was shared with oversea's buyers and the homeless. In addition to that online auctioneers. The result, actual japanese gamers and american gamers didn't really get their hands on it to spread any hype. Everything seems to have been botched.
THe "worldwide launch aka u.s./japan" just meant retarded shortages at launch since they didn't make enough. The ridiculous price. The lack of good games at launch to justify the price. Horrible marketing (zomg scary baby, oh ps3, wtf mate). The nintendo wii's massive hype and the 360 which has partly established itself.
With so many things gone wrong the only way to resuscitate this is a major price drop again + hot games + renewed marketing blitz. Somehow i doubt all three of these will happen simultaneously this year.
Unfortunately for sony i'll bet that number is shipped. The sam's club i work at has a prominent display for the ps3 (for the last week or so) and i don't think we've ever had a display for the wii of any kind (home office sent us a full pod of displays but we've had it racked forever). We've received at least 50 wii's in the past month and 27 ps3's at some point within the last few months.
IN any case all the wii's sold out and we still have those 27 ps3's we got probably two months ago. One week after the price drop and our database show's zero sales of the ps3's.
Thats my prediction for end of life cost of the ps3. Too many extra components in the ps3 like wifi, more video encoders/decoders, blu-ray, and most of all the hard drive which will always have a near fixed cost to the end. As platters gain in data density the lowest cost hd's cost as much to manufacture as higher density ones. I think thats the primary reason sony is gonna increase hd size over time (surprised ms isn't doing it).
In any case that alone adds like $30-$40 over the ps2 which still retails for $129.
Ugh, the European PS3's rendered in 720/1080p (I forget which but I definetly remember that it was rendered) massive difference from just upscaling. It was found out last year that the U.S. ps3's couldn't ever render higher then the original resolution and I've been wanting a software version ever since. Mostly since sony also continually updates their emulation software to add more and more titles, 88% is well over a thousand games.
IF any other manufacturer had a defect rate of 30% (slightly above that according to the largest game retailer there is, being EB) mostly due to heating dissipation design and were getting as many complaints as they were I don't see any other choice. The press has gotten really bad in the last month or so on this issue.
Had they not made this press release, it would have probably adversely affected sales.
Speak for yourself, i'm not anywhere near a "pro" starcraft player but watching some of these games played by top paid players is definately extremely interesting. The amount of strategy and speed involved is massive. Also it wasn't just dumb luck as you suggest. Other great and free to play online rts' came out at the same time. Age of empires (had a good online presence as I played that as well), Command and Conquer, civ (to a degree), and their sequels.
To this day i still turn on starcraft with its' 2d graphics and it's fun. It's not dumb luck which causes it to win in a sea of competition. It was excellent refinement in the gameplay, cool settings/units, fun factor, and finally strategy. Tactics and strategy that is remeniscent of older board games like chess. Based on what i've seen I have a gut feeling that starcraft will outlast even starcraft two which just may too many differentiating units (yes, i believe a game can always become too complicated--the oldest and most interesting games are usually somewhat simple with the flexibility for numerous strategies like Go and to a lesser degree chess). But this is early conjecture of a game that has yet to come out.
As far as dumb luck and universality of games is concerned, on the flip side, SMB came free with Nintendo which had no competition until the genesis came out. Most people haven't even heard of the other systems including the genesis' predecessor, The Sega Master System. It to contrary can be argued had the luck of timing and lack of good competition (during the time of starcrafts release there were numerous RTS' that could be considered great).

At this point removing the drive at most will save $60 off the production cost (specific drive related components--was $125 during the shortage and launch of ps3). Everything else required for the player is redundant in the system. The cell is a powerful processor that can handle any codecs without any extra specialized decoding chips. The video output hardware (any digital to analog converters as well) are also redundant.
Olevia 37 inch (good enough unless you have a fairly sizeable room) 720p for $700, used 1200 watt 7.1 surround from ebay $250. Thats 950 for an excellent tv and sound system and it's a hell of a lot better then the sd tube i used to have.
Plus i have a ten foot vga cable for it so i can make it a secondary demonstration monitor. The resolution/quality difference as long as you are within 6-7 feet is massive.
If you have $2000 dollars you can get an excellent DLP or a 47inch LCD. I don't see how this is not affordable for most american's.

For my current sprint phone I cancelled net features because it was barely used on this type of phone but it's much cheaper and faster. EVDO type networks (Verizon, sprint, etc.) are far better then what AT&T are using. My greatest disappointment about the iphone was the carrier. Hip internet phone with the worst major carrier (digital broadband wise).

EVERYONE in our family knew that it would be chaos if the military stayed in iraq for longer then a month. That pretty much made the war unfeasible.

You keep on saying the word pc laptop as if all makes were of the same quality. It's true you have to put in more work to find a good manufacturer and a good product line for them (like going with compaq's business line of products vs. their dreadful presario line a few years back) but for a lot of people a little research on quality reviews is worth the few hundred they can potentially save.

I chose isuppli's data because they get component costs pretty accurate and often from suppliers for the components themselves. And no sony does NOT make everything in house. They maybe a large electronics manufacturer but they are outsourcing a lot of chip production and motherboard assembly. During release Sony had asustek make a lot of the PS3 boards. I believe they've added another OEM since then but I don't recall which one.
Last I checked (a few months ago) the quality of Apple releases were substandard. Amazon's ubox (or whatever) used a much higher resolution and a cost of file size. Apple's were below way below that of even dvd's. At the time i just ended up going to the store and picking up a box set of the series i was downloading from them (which was actually cheaper then $2 bucks and episode as there were 24 episodes and the box set was $39.x.
Until apple's quality increases there is no reason to go with them unless your movies will only be played on something like an ipod.

At release the components themselves for the system alone was $300 over retail (search isuppli's data on next-gen.biz). Add in packing, controller, cables, manuals, etc it was probably closer to $350 over. They priced the ps3 at $499 and $599 because that is what they believed the limit would be for consumers to except such a system. How do we know sony would still take such a hit without blu-ray. They may have still decided that consumers would be willing to buy their system for $499 and $599 and just minimized their loss by a hundred dollars.
Blu-ray components at release was $125 dollars. It's safe to assume that dvd components are at least $20 so at most they'd have saved $105 and if they kept the same price point they'd still be losing more per system then they have for either the psx or ps2 (both were slightly profitable on the sale of each console after about on million units).
Plus thats onyl a short term money savings, bleeding edge technology goes down in price the fastest.
What's your point? Just because some random people are used to shitty broadcast doesn't mean anything. Give them a properly formatted 1080p picture right next to it and then ask them to go back to whatever format they were watching previously. The quality of the picture does effect peoples enjoyability. If this were not true we'd be playing games in the lowest resolution possible.
In any case there is no way you can get me to go back. I have a 32 inch 720p TV i watch from about 5-6 feet away usually and there is no way i'd go with any smaller resolution.
You cna put movies into the memory card if i remember correctly. Assuming you want to format it yourself. Although burning your onw mini-dvd discs would have been far more awesome.

I do disagree onthe ps3 though, they've never taken such a hit with the ps2 or psx on hardware costs plus sales are weaker then the ps2. I wouldn't call it the same situation.
They are combining more chips and trying to make a more efficient circuit board (65nm cell announcement, the fact that now the number of ps3 components have been halved from 4,000 components to 2,000). During launch a few months ago the ps3 cost $300 more to manufacture then they sold it for (not to mention cost of boxing, shipping, advertising).
Price is at the top of their concerns but they can't just downgrade the current components or subsidize it further. They are just going to need more time for a price drop. They may have dug themselves into a hole but it's not one you can easily get out of.
