  1. Dreamcast on PS2 Controller Suit Goes Badly For Sony · · Score: 1

Had an absolutely phenominal list of launch titles and a year on the ps2 (might have even been more) along with a promising amount of systems sales. The graphics on the Dreamcast still look comparable to that of many ps2 games today.

The one year headstart, and the "100%" marketshare on nextgen isn't that big a deal as it may seem.

To get blu-ray approved as the (or a) next home media for hdtv Sony will need the blessings of more movie studio's then their own. If it was a simple matter of their own games or movies then it wouldn't be much of an issue. They'd easily push the system out.

Back in the olden days when I was still a teenager in the year of 1999. I was obsessed with playing japanese rpgs with my psx (the first ps used to be abreviated as such!). It fell down a full flight of stairs (messed up younger sister :( ).

My obsession also incurred the wrath of my parents. Particularily my father who was not happy to see me gaming over 6 hours in a row and proceeded unto ripping the psx out of it's home on my desk causing all the plugs to go off, hurled it onto the wall which caused the cd thingy to pop open exposing my precious Xenogears disc one to pop out onto the ground.

I mouth was wide open in shock but alas my father was not satisfied he grabbed the psx once again and slammed my psx toward the very spot my xenogears CD was resting at. I witnessed the something I did not realize occured with cds, it was as if it had shattered like glass with many small particles along with the bigger chunks.

The most important thing is though, after the situation cooled down I plugged in my psx tried another game and to my surprise it was still running! Hooray i would play with it for another 3ish years at which point the ps2 replaced it (psx is probably still okay, just resting on the shelf).

I'm so sorry i got a ps2, why I only got to play games from my favorite creator Hideo Kojima--Metal Gear series. Numerous obscure but fun japanese rpgs along with mainstream ones like FF, Xenosaga, Dragonquest. How about gran turismo, being able to recreat an old ae86 and tuning it to hell is so shitty. But i guess those and all the other games I've played and the genre of games I play are just mediocre altogether. Why i should have bought a gamecube to play mario party and metroid or something. Why not! I should buy the revolution so i can play Mario Dance party and mario fishing with funny controller thingy (thats not a goddamn revolution in gaming it's a different type of control and it's nothing new in comparison to arcades). I'm not gonna buy a ps3 no matter what. Even if i dislike colorful cute little kiddy oriented games i'll still have a grand total of 4 mature titles to look forward to during the revolution's lifetime.

  9. Not at all on Sony's PS3 Strategy Brilliant or Insane? · · Score: 1

Ugh, your exaggerating the cost of the blu-ray... The actual pure drive components cost will be bumped down to probably around $30 bucks after Sony ships off their first million or two since it's their factories and their own tech no licensing required for the technology to other companies.

All the expensive chips required to decode the hd stream and convert the video is already there. Sony can probably just design some software to run on their cell to decode whatever mpeg stream blu-ray runs on and they've got other chips already to handle tv output.

Xbox360 isn't doing so hot in japan because their barely moving any units there at all. Sony is like a national brand to them so no matter what the hell they charge people will buy it. For example, for big games companies charge almost 2x as much as average games over there. FFXII will be out for about $90 USD in japan.

Here's a sample of XBox360 sale data in japan

    Even the launch was horrid:

I really really doubt that Sony would intentionally break a game you've already downloaded unless it was free with a time limit. With this much cutthroat competition that would be like digging their own graves.

The drm in all their other hardware is due to the pushing of music/movie studios. I'm sure sony's hardware division wouldn't give a rats ass about drm in blu-ray if not for these studios (including their own).

Okay, how in god's name did the parent get modded up? All his points were proven to be false in previous article's comments on slashdot.

His first point was proven false by myself and a few others. The ps3 does not cost $900 to manufacture. I'd rather not repeat what's been said so many times so here's a link as to why:
    http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=177857&cid=147 53299

In addition to whats in that link, IBM has recently stated that they've gotten costs of fabbing the Cell for ps3 down to $75 per chip (the ML article estimated a cost of $250 per chip). It should get cheaper over time. The rest of the hardware information and manufacturing is talked about in the link.

Third, I'm not sure how the nvidia chip was in anyway an afterthought. The very first mention of the ps3 that I know of as a full hardware unit included the nvidia chip. They learned that they had no choice but to have a separate graphics chip during the design of the ps2.

The one thing most of us did not doubt was the delay in japan. Most industry insiders felt that the console would probably be delayed 2-3 months. Or as some developer mentioned, a "very hot spring." Signfying that it would be closer to a summer date then the spring date sony has been touting.

The U.S. release will be in November which will be perfect for the thanksgiving -> Christmas buying season.

  21. Sony is a Hardware R&D Company on PlayStation 3 Not So Much Delayed? · · Score: 1

While, microsoft buys almost all parts of their console from different vendors (whom are all trying to make a profit from each piece). Sony by and large is fabbing their own chips and making their own ic. The only piece of hardware that sony has no plan to manufacture themselves is probably the nvidia chip but i wouldnt' be surprised if they ended up fabbing that themselves.

IBM says they've been able to get the cost of fabbing the new cell chip down to about $50 bucks. Sony not only helped fund the fab ibm is using in their fishkill plant but they already have plans for making their own fabs for the cell chip with toshiba.

Sony is also making the Blu-ray drives themselves and since it's their standard they aren't paying any royalties for the hardware. If i can buy a full featured dvd player for $30 bucks @ retail then surely it costs no more then $22 for the entire player for the manufacturer. The pure drive components are even less, closer to $12 or less. Blu-ray is newer and more expensive but it's sony's baby they will be making the hardware in their own factories. The most expensive cost for sony is gonig to be the cost of setting up the factories for making the drive components.

Sony isn't a loss leader, just like with the ps2 they've got a plan. They know when they've reached a sale of x million consoles any loss they've had on hardware up to that point will be gone. For the ps2 i believe it was 1 million. Which was easily reached and sony hasn't sold the hardware for a loss since then.

If you had the knowledge that a pirated version of a disc would give you a higher quality then the legitimate version would you even bother buying the real disc? At least now with dvd's your going to get the full quality of the video that is offered out of the box.

  24. My First Thought on HD DVD to Screw Early HDTV Adopters · · Score: 1

My first though was, hell i'd rather download a torrent at this rate. If they keep this standard then down the road after blu-ray or hd-dvd discs mature i'll probably download a torrent and burn it in my home. I win in convenienc, price, and comfort (knowing that if my disc gets scratched i can easily make a new one).

The movie industry has a few choices either get with the program or see a massive increase in piracy. VHS had zero copy protection and movie makers were still able to make a nice profit. DVD's were much more painful to copy and the new discs are just gonna be pita to play and copy.
