    2) Claiming to be cynical about "geekdom" indicates you were never a geek in your life and only hang out in places like /. to make you feel like you "get" technology and that "science like stuff." Apparently you don't.

    3) The open season on "facts" is proportional to your actually understanding the hard data and not what someone telling you the hard data means. So far all I've heard is a lot of yammering of "this side says this" or "that side says that". Seeing media conspiracies or business conspiracies is not science it is politics. As far as the issue at hand I'd say that Clarke's first and fourth laws apply:

Who's to say at some point in the future that the web sites of selected political parties, news sources, belief systems, or technologies will be blocked?

"Freedom of access" is the heart of the internet. It is not a right I would give up for my child. Your "free laptop" (like software) is not free when you impose these "arbitrary, but politically expedient" restrictions.

Users of Word 2007 should also be aware that equations created with the default equation editor included in Microsoft Word 2007 will be unacceptable in revision, even if the file is converted to a format compatible with earlier versions of Word; this is because conversion will render equations as graphics and prevent electronic printing of equations. Regrettably, we will be forced to return any revised manuscript created with the Word 2007 default equation editor to authors for re-editing. To get around this, please use the MathType equation editor or the legacy equation editor included in previous versions of Microsoft Word, which can be accessed from "Insert Object" from the "Insert" ribbon in Word 2007." Some of you may even recall that MS issued a "post-uninstall" registry cleaner for the Office '97 that cleaned up left over keys and registry associations after an uninstall... if you did not use the utility, a re-install of the application would fail.
