  1. The Only Non-Classified Paper on 50th Anniversary of the Starfish Prime Nuclear Weapon Test Today · · Score: 4, Informative

    On this date in 1962 my father recorded the detonation and the resulting pulse from a "laboratory" he had set up in his suburban house in the San Fernado Valley {Northwest Los Angelews] The resulting paper "Distant Electromagnetic Observations of the High-Altitude Nuclear Detonation of July 9, 1962" was the only non-classified scientific paper which was published in The Journal of Geophysical Research about the pulse see: http://www.agu.org/pubs/crossref/1963/JZ068i006p01781.shtml

    Some where around here I have a 35mm Strip chart negative of the detonation as recorded by the oscilloscope camera... I would donate the film to a university library for preservation but I have no idea who'd be interested in it. At 89 years old my dad now suffers from dementia and does not remember much about his days as a pocket protector / slip stick using Space Scientist / Engineer

    Actually no it wasn't [at least for me]... I was more concerned with malware, Spam, and viruses.

    Yahoo has the dubious distinction of having been subverted several times with login scripts which downloaded malware to unsuspecting users.I had to clean up a few of those messes... I don't use Yahoo mail nor to I recommend using it [it also had the quirk of leaving traces of mail sessions in the local browser cache... Never use Yahoo if you are trying to do something underhanded... [Your soon to be Ex will find out.]

    While Hotmail was in its time king of Spam and email viruses who needs that?. I've used gmail for 10 years and have not had one piece of malware get through and not many pieces of spam escape their spam-trap. Yes the new UI sucks... but then again its UI is more likeable that WinRT/Metro [Windows 7 forever!]

    Haven't used Hotmail since '98 or '99... after they made some funky rules about usage... I got tired of having to re-enable my account [and kill the viruses]... For a while I had my own mail server but when I got the invite to gmail in '01 I put my request in on the domain beta and moved my domain. Smooth sailin' ever since. Who needs Hotmail?

    Obviously a Troll from the 1%... I'm an experienced network admin in a small crappy southern town where they want pay $50K, crap benefits, and want you to work like a dog... but I could afford to accept that kind of wage here because the COL is lower if they'd here me... but here experience is unimportant -- cost is everything... being "old" is a disadvantage...

    months back I was reading a NYTimes article [See: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/29/us/bay-area-technology-professionals-cant-get-hired-as-industry-moves-on.html?pagewanted=all ] about of the number of experienced tech people in Silicon Valley that can't get jobs because the big companies like Google, Apple, Oracle, and so forth are interested in young and cheap --- that's how the execs afford to pay themselves so well...

    Of course I'm sure that since you are willing to save $45K it's covering the cost of your housing or Cadillacs at the expense of the guy you'd hire who has to live in a roach infested closet in Castro valley

    So the reality is if you are an old tech professional and get fired or laid off you are not likely to get re-hired... The H1B program is a corporate welfare program. It should be eliminated as Pork. Yes I can hear the squeeling--- that's pork too...

    Unfortunately for the teacher SC is a right to work state... which means that an employer in SC has the right to do things to their employees they would not do to their hunting dog-- and get away with it! If "dismissed for cause" a lawyer cannot charge more that $326 for representing the discharged employee before the SCDEW... Also understand that it is also an employment "At Will" state... means you can be given the boot at any time.

    There will be no wrongful dismissal as no lawyer here would take the job [it might interfere with future work -- the 'good ol' boy network' is alive an well here... you screw with the powers that be and they will screw you and make sure you stay screwed.]

    OTOH I find it ironic that Card's work [a self described homophobe] is being called pornographic.

    the GNU license is about freedom... Where as Closed Source is generally all about slavery: for the user and for the programmer... the only person that's free is the one that is pocketing your money
