While you were painting in primary school (which, apparenly wasn't that long ago) you were using an additive color model - 100% of Red, Green and Blue will make black. This is the way CMYK printing works - 100% of C, M, Y and K will give you black. Actually, 100% of all those colors will give you a great gloppy mess and an angry pressman, but that's not the point.
RGB, when used on a monitor or by our eyeballs, is an subtractive color model: 100% of R, G and B will give you white. Now, when printing, you start with a blank substrate and add colors to it: in other words, printing is ALWAYS an additive color process. There is no way in commercial printing to start with a fully saturated substrate and remove color to get what you want. In other, other words: you can't pring with RGB or with any subtractive model.
That's why Gimp can't work without CMYK support. And, if Gimp wants to be successful, it will also need full ICC support (something Photoshop does better than almosy any other program this side of dedicated RIP software) and the ability to channel calculations.
So how come Linux is going onto the desktop of all the film production companies?
Because it's not.
Linux is used on the desktops of some film production companies. I have friends who work in the bidness, and at most film production companies (a very general phrase) you will find a mix of Windows, OS9/OSX and various *nixes. ILM actually does a good deal of their pre-rendering on Macs, but can't say so publicly because of their deal with SGI. Take a tour of Skywalker Ranch someday and you'll see what I mean.
90% of the people out there could use MacPaint and not notice the difference. For the remaining 10% there is no substitute for Photoshop.
There is one answer to this question: RAM. When I first installed X I had only 256 megs, which, with the application load I run, isn't enough. I installed a Gig and it made all the difference in the world. No more waiting for windows to open, no more hitting the disk.
On a 500 MHz G3 with an 8 meg Rage 128 I find the lag is almost all about the graphics card and, as it's a laptop, I can't upgrade it.
I actually find using OS X to be faster than, because it can do more than one thing at a time. No more sit-there-while-Mozilla-loads. Now I can switch to something else while those big pages load.
Then apparently Coca Cola and Powerbars are highly hallucinogenic when taken together, cause my 500 MHz G3 is zipping along in 10.2 as we speak! And I'm playing mp3s! And watching hits bounce of my firewall!
With a standard combat load a MiG-25 can hit Mach 2.8
And then immediately land to refuel. The MiG-25 and 31 are/were both plagues with engines which, while powerful, were horribly inefficient. Hitting anything over Mach 2.5 with a decent combat load almost exhausted fuel supply. Engine technology is the main reason the USSR was never able to combat the SR-71.
Mac zealots are no different from Linux zealots, or Porsche zealots, or [insert brand name here] zealots and and on and on. This is just a local expression of a generalized phenomenon, i.e., the projection of one's ego structure onto an object for the sake of narcissistic self-gratification: see how cool I am because my Mac is Titanium or my Porsche is fast.
You think this shit is whack? Take a look at the cycling world. I know people who won't ride bikes because of the material the frame is made out of. "Steel is the only material for a frame," or "I won't ever buy a bike that's not titanium."
Everyone has their toys. Some people need to think they have the best toys, tho.
The various fundamentalist sects of Islam are a very small, very vocal minority. One of the core beliefs of Islam is that Mohammed was the Seal of the Prophets - he was the last, and there will be no more. The Koran is the last divine revelation of God. There will be no more.
Even the most radical of Muslims will agree with this. When Islam gets radicalized, it is the politics that change and not the core beliefs of the religion. This is the reason that, when Farrakahan and his followers visit Muslim countries they are not considered Muslims.
The only excuses for not learning the command line are laziness or (misplaced) intimidation. Anyone willing to put forth a miniscule amount of effort can learn enough command line to accomplish certain tasks faster than with a GUI.
Bullshit.
The vast majority of computer users on the planet want nothing to do with CLIs, grep or awk. They want a computer which is easy to use, does what they want when they want, and doesn't give them too many headaches. For most of the computing world, Windows and Apple have provided this. The percentage of people who want to use grep, awk, mkdir or netstat is very small.
I am not debating the relative merits of Windows and OS9/X. I am, however, making a point about the myopic view of some Slashdotters. Most of the computing world plain doesn't care about the things which are the touchstone of much debate and argument here, because computers are no longer the privelege of an elite, technologically savvy clique but are commodities, like microwaves and refridgerators. Want to know why Linux has almost no desktop penetration? Cause it's a pain in the ass for Joe Average PC User.
This debate is akin to me saying that anyone who can't shift a straight cut racing gearbox without using the clutch is plain lazy. Although the fact that I can do this is probably indicative of the fact that I am a better driver than 95% of the people out there, but this helps me not one bit when I am stuck in 5 mph Manhattan traffic with the rest of the world.
I have been seeing an enormous number of netbios (port 137) hits on my firewall over the last few days. I usually get a few here and there (in between ssh and ftp hits from Asia. ..) but it's been the majority of stuff over the past coupla days.
And no one has mentioned the lack of Tom Bombadil yet? My favorite hippy-freakout character excised from the movie. I was planning to laugh my ass off.
Of course, this may have been discussed in one of the previous umpteen LOTR threads I have completely ignored.
Without NYC New York State is another Vermont.
Run!

You can not print RGB. Lemmee say that again
YOU CAN NOT PRINT RGB!!!!!!
RGB is an additive color model, which means it won't print. No matter how you print, everything ends up CMYK. Everything.
And GIMP sucks so bad it isn't funny.
Yeah, I knew you did.

And, apparently, almost 23 minutes of battery life.
He said, "dsl," you egregious douchebag.
Actually, if you want the real thing, find one before they tamed the trailing throttle oversteer. Separates men from boys in a hurry.
Stop holding back.
Who wants a hit?

As for renaming large numbers of files, we are in agreement.
Bullshit.

A modern F1 engine also costs in the range of USD250,000 a pop. For somone who wants afforable performance, there's no substitue for cubic inches.
Now things are suddenly clear.
And most probably to people who require some sort of home computational device.
Or perhaps the world's most bitchin' iPod.
Wait a minute - let's not jump to conclusions.
For me it's as funny as people complaining that 10.2 cost $130. I haven't paid for Apple system software since, well, since ever.
