HP is actually one of the worst offenders of this behavior. If you ever do a restore from an HP recovery partition or see one new, they put an incredible number of crappy little things on it (and last I checked, even weatherbug). You can run Spybot on it and find like 25 or 30 items. That shouldn't happen out of the box.
But, as someone else mentioned, it's really the manufacturers choice to put whatever they want on it. Although if it gets too bad, I'm sure someone will step in and say something.
It should be noted I think that, for Antivirus, some companies (Dell in particular) give you a choice of which AV program you want installed, you can even tell it to give a trial or pay full price for the real version. That's not a bad start at choices.
Now if they'd just let you NOT put crap like realplayer and musicmatch on there (aside from the XPS systems, which you can say no to most of the software).
"nerds, cad engineers, and some servers here and there" ??
You make it sound like linux is only available to those who go out and look for it. What about those people that go and buy their small business PCs from Dell with RedHad installed? What group do those people fit into? Most small businesses (and others) usually aren't "nerds," some might be "engineers" and most desktop PCs don't really get used for servers...
"It's just one of the nice little things the station has done for me," said the 61-year-old newsman.
Really? Who is paying for this then? Is there money that the station is spending to send you there? Or to set up your studio there? When that money could be used to... I don't know... make the station better?
I understand that he may be good, and that by having him at all, it may improve the station... but really, how much is this "two studio" thing costing?
I just love how it's so small. Apple should market these babies and do another commercial with Yao and MiniMe (don't remember his name), only this time for the G5 instead of the PowerBook.
And yes, the buttons being in English was slightly odd.... But the guy has some serious skillz... yes, skills with a 'z'. Even the little power button added.
But what if many people read that and don't see it as just a "story"? What if people take it for what he wrote? (Essentially saying Mac is "as bad as" Windows based on this one vulnerability he mentioned).
While this new article does take maybe too much aim at the original author, it should at least help clarify what is really going on.
I'm far from a security expert or anything, but I would be far more apt to trust Mac OS security out of the box than Windows security...
I don't have "parents," plural. I will go live with my mom and her fiance. And my little brother and sister (3 and 6 respectively). Neither my mom, nor her fiance have a job at the moment. My mom is taking nursing classes though and her fiance is "looking" for a job.
Sorry to burst your bubble. Life isn't perfectly peachy for all college kids. We don't all come from perfect, upper-middle class families to "sponge" off of.
Ya, it's the different ball of wax I'm sort of looking for. I mean, I don't have to have a pefect job I love or anything, but having a livable wage would be pretty cool. I could easily get restaraunt work somewhere as a server or otherwise (not listed on my resume cause it was a while ago). But that's not something I'd rather do... Oh well though.
Wow, where are the mods when you need them... I mean really... (+5, Insightful) here! Thanks for the heads up.
In seriousness now though, even if a GPA is low, it's usually smarter to put it right on the resume, otherwise, some companies could think you're hiding it. At least this way you're honest with them up front. Sure, it should be higher, but it's not. That's just how it is.
Right, but then you usually can't update it. When you try to install a service pack on a machine with an illegal key, 9 times out of 10, it will detect that and tell you such. Thus, no updates for you. WindowsUpdate does the same thing. Although you could go and download every individual update from the WindowsUpdate catalog, the service pack is something that is almsot necessary now. Some things I've seen even require it (usually other updates).
Does this mean that every "cracked" version of XP is not updatable? Na... but it's usually worthless to do it, since security updates and patches are generally a good thing to have.
You do realize that all of the links on the Google cache versions still use the same server right? And I'm pretty sure they use the same images from the server too. So if you point to a cached page that the server doesn't have images for, you won't get them. So it's still trying to pull all of these images from that server... you know, the one that isn't working.
Unless dell is changing their policy, they don't have a "recovery" cd. They have an XP install disk and as other people have mentioned, the drivers/applications/etc discs are seperate. And yes, once you install the XP cd, the drivers need to be installed seperately (stupid broadcom NIC drivers too). Seeing how they seem to be changing a few things though, this might change as well.
They wouldn't be the first to give spyware preinstalled though. HP/Compaq has been doing it for quite a while. If you've done a restore from the recovery partition of an HP anytime recently they come preloaded with an insane amount of crap (including weatherbug and any other program that a company would throw at them).
This may be a hasty reply, but I never liked "analyzing" poetry as it is. I can't imagine what would happen if they tried to get students to read this stuff in school.
I wouldn't want to get this as a homework assignment...
lioness? what lioness? is it the soul of the lioness? is the lioness a model? wtf?
That car kinda reminds me a little of the Porsche Cayanne for some reason. You know, minus the enclosed back and all. I think it's just the hood/front end design.
It's missing the two tow hooks though... "you see those two tow hooks there... they look like tusks!"
Oh, and I can't wait for my RvB DVD to finally freakin send! Those guys rock.
A little while ago (11/11) I was reading a blog of some girl who lives in NYC and she had these pictures of where someone had spray painted over tons and tons of iPod ads in NYC.
I thought nothing of it, seeing as how I could understand how some stupid people could take something the wrong way and do something stupid about it. Now... there's a slashdot article and a little movie about it...
I like it! Looks just fine in Safari 1.1.1 on Panther.
I love the option of giving the users a choice too! Using the CSS import option would be great. Just create 3 or 4 color schemes and give people a choice (at least for the "main" part of it).

"The Apple zealots are worse than Linux'es own!"
:-p
Do you mean linux in general? Or are you talking distro zealots? Cause I think those might get a bit more hostile...

Seems more like flamebait than insightful to me... who let the monkey moderate?
If you really wanted to get to her, you should have just put ME on it... ;)

You sure? Loads pretty fast for me...

Well... a lot better than: "Security!"
;)
Good luck with that drug test...

Ya, got me. I wasn't trying to be "funny". Just saying I wanted a job for christmas.
And just what is "tentative conditional" employment anyways??

So far anyone that has asked me what I want for christmas gets the same answer as everyone else:
A Job.
Graduating sucks when you don't have a job. Then again, I still have two finals left.

No no...
Lego my SERVER!

We're now a color level of um... well, we should probable make up an asteroid color warning scheme for national security. SOMEONE GET ON THAT!
So wait... then is my mini-DVI only go to VGA? That would be kind of dumb then, wouldn't it?
;)
My bad on not totally reading the description
Is the one I have a "mini-VGA" then? I thought I saw they had one of those too.
I'm so lost and disappointed now...
