  1. ...better than ATI on Fedora's OpenGL Composite Desktop · · Score: 1

Well, I've used three laptops with ATI mobile chipsets and none of them have worked properly. Two AMD64, one Pentium-M. On the other hand, my own laptop with an NVidia-based GFX card has worked fine. I'm wondering what made Fedora move towards RedHat as opposed to NVidia... although perhaps it's just that the full open-source ATI drivers (reverse-engineered) have been better than the NVidia ones.

  2. Games industry VS gamers on Games Industry Gains Lobbyist · · Score: 1

It should be noted that the "games industry" doesn't always have interest that coincides with gamers. More particularly, the industry's interests don't coincide well with industry employees.

While it might be nice to see the anti-gaming crusaders put in their place a bit, the possibility of employees taking a hit and more attacks against those who make anti-CD cracks (or more promotion of Starforce or other such evils) doesn't necessarily make this a good thing.

In other words, it's better than nothing. There's nothing to indicate that the man didn't spend time with his family, but rather perhaps he and his family are now some distance away, which means at times he would be otherwise unable to see/talk to them in person.

I chat with my GF on MSN and webcam almost daily. On weekends when I can I drive 4h to see her. Neither one is exclusive of the other, but as she lives 4h away from me and goes to school, whereas I work here, weekday visits in-person don't really work out. No reason the grandparent poster couldn't be in a similar situation.

Where I worked we wwould still install "office 2000" at locations that buy licenses for "office 2003", etc, because that is the current organization standard. Mix+match would create problems with incompatabilities etc

They're still making use of the 2003 license though, just with a previous version of the software (which is allowed, and sometimes the only way to use software that is no longer sold in the older versions).

  7. Bullshit on CIA Secretly Reclassifying Documents · · Score: 1

The "American Public" could remove the CIA from existence in the next pair of elections if it wanted

No, the "American Public" could vote in another candidate. Actually, they could pretty much vote *the* other candidate. Do you honestly think that given what's pretty much a choice between two candidates, voting one way will bring "peace and prosperity" whereas voting the other will bring "tragedy and despair?"

The chances of somehow getting a truely good candidate, managing to get him elected, and having him right-away use sweeping power to clean up decades of corruption and idiocy are pretty slim indeed.

The bottom-line here is that there are certain things worth keeping secret

Do you get the gist of RE-classifying? That means those documents were declassified, and for most intents and purposes therefore already viewable outside of classified channels. Now they've decided to make them secret again.

Nobody doubts the need for classified documents at times, but there's a difference between making something classified initially and classifying (or re-classifying) docuements that have been until recent publically viewable... especially when doing without proper process is breaking various laws.

  9. Ah yes, the almighty site block on Being School District Admin? · · Score: 1

I love the "in case" blocking of various sites. At a district I previously worked for, I was told to block "deviantart.com" because there was a section which contained semiclothed/nude pictures. Well, that section is well marked, contains warnings beforehand, and isn't so simple to get to that one could accidentally click on.

I know many young people with artistic talent whom use (or could use) DA as an art repository. Despite my arguements against censoring it I was ultimately forced to blacklist the site.

Chasing around sites that offer some mixed content or chat capabilities seems to be par for the course. Instead of having to add a block for ever new one of a gazillion chat/etc sites how about you deal with the few students that are abusing them.

  10. Fan size on Silverstone ST30NF 300W Silent PSU reviewed · · Score: 1

This doesn't work very well for the small-form-factor people, but what I would rather see are cases with larger fans in general. A larger, lower-RPM higher-air-displacement fan is generally a lot quieter. In many cases, there is at least room for a slightly larger fan at the bottom of the PSU, but the best best is a side-mount casefan.

Some of the newer server machines here at work have larger-than normal fans to the rear of the case. They run slow, steady, and quiet.

er, As you might notice, this doesn't apply specificaly to power supplies, though they probably could have a slightly larger fan in many. However, the PSU fan does often contribute to overall air circulation in a case, so having better case ventilation would mean you could probably ease up on the RPM's etc of your PSU fan as well.

  11. Different market on Silverstone ST30NF 300W Silent PSU reviewed · · Score: 1

Probably not, and as a gamer you've probably got 5.1 Surround and big speakers anyhow. As the old adage goes "if you can hear your fan or drives, you haven't got big enough speakers"

However, this would do fairly well for office machines, especially places with rows on rows of noisy machines (of course, a silent-style CPU fan would also be needed, and a lower pricetag for most offices).

  12. Pens and pennies on Being School District Admin? · · Score: 1

I've worked two school districts thus far...

In the former, our kids loved to stick pens and pennies into the drive. There's also a significant problem at several schools with theft. Workplaces may have issues with theft, but replacing the ball-mice with optical-mice in a lab only to have one dissappear 15 minutes later is somewhat disconcerting.

Food issues include massive wads of gum under desks, chip wrappers, rotten bananas, etc.

In the current distict, I've heard stories from co-workers about teenagers caught copulating in the back rooms when a technician comes in to work early/late, some kids have no shame!

Add to that that teachers seem to think they know everything, but rarely know enough not to install webshots, spywarefuntime, and various other fun things... well it's not exactly a recipe for joy.

If you want to talk about patches, try getting the same system to work stably and without constant patching on windows.

But, looking back, I think that the vast majority of people claiming success with WineX were company shills. Either that, or people didn't want to admit that their $5 a month was a complete waste.

What exactly gives you that impression? If you're worrie, check my comments and see that I'm a longtime poster, no Transgaming employee/shill. While a lot of my games didn't work wonderfully back in the WineX days, I generally had luck with the popular ones (Warcraft III was big at the time). Nowadays, I tend to use it more exclusively as my windows hardware drivers like to lock up. On my laptop, BF2 ran better in Cedega, though probably due to issues with the NVidia drivers not updating right in windows.

My biggest complaint is that there are a lot of what appear to be minor issue that *could* be fixed, but since the bigger money is in newer games, there's little support for fixing the little things that make older games work properly.

With the former, the point at which love might be reached is when you know you would sacrifice of yourself in such a way, were it ever required of you. For those that think they are in love, consider... would you sacrifice a kidney, or other bodily organ, degrading the overall health of your body in order to assist or sustain that of the one you love?

When I moved to my new job, and got a better laptop, a lot of people here were running KDE, so I switched over. Here are some of my opinions/impressions:

    a) The "K" spellings of everything are rather annoying
    b) KioSlaves are the shiznat: Fish, FTP, and other integration simply kicks ass
    c) File browser is very nice, the ability to hover-preview documents has actually done rather well by me
    d) Sound system=annoying at times. System notifications are sometimes useful, but I wish there were a way to "suspend" it while running apps that need my soundcard resources (without timeout) without using eSound. Actually this is partly a linux sound issue though... OSS/ALSA apps tend not to play nice with multiple sources
    e) Some eye-candy features are rather nice for me. I enjoy a nice desktop wallpaper, and rather appreciate the ability to have it autochange at various intervals. This should please those 'webshots' windows users as well. One request: Let me point it at a directory so I can just delete/drop files from it as I wish without adding them to the wallpaper rotation

As I've been using KDE, I've slowly traversed versions. Generally I've been impressed, though as a user of Debian/Unstable I've sometimes met clashes with the 'unstable' part of things:

    a) My touchpad simply died in KDE for a certain period of time. Could not be reconfigured, and worked until KDE loaded
    b) The hover-over descriptions are rather nice for some windows, such as my IM client
    c) Pager window previews are useful
    d) Brushed stell look is very appealing (from KDE in debian/stable to unstable is a big leap)
    e) HalD+Storage Media config=Joy or pain, depending on how well configured

    f) Would SOMEBODY tell me a good system for input of Asian characters (Chinese, etc) in the GUI, similar to the many windows apps that exist???!

The universe is a pretty f***ing big place, for us to claim we understand even the most miniscule fraction of how it works is sheer arrogance.

That's not to say that we shouldn't try to understand more, but rather that to make any such "scientific" assumption that there could not be a God is simply for lack of facts either way. Science doesn't disprove God, it just doesn't prove either way.

By the same token, religious zealots who attack perfect good science or even somewhat grounded scientific theories are just as arrogant. True science does not exist to prove or disprove any religious theory, but rather to enhance overall knowledge. Since the workings of the universe at large is the ultimate question, and by religion God is the ultimate power, one could state that in a form God is the ultimate knowledge, and by knowing more we're simply learning more about the grand design of things.

Personally, I'm not big on the whole omniscient+omnipotent thing. If I could know everything, always, then I think I might just do a poke here, a poke there... set certain tracks in certain directions, make certain events a sure-thing, but otherwise let life occur as it may. By religious standards, we're talking about a being to whom time is not even a consideration, and the universe is pretty damn old already, so trying to state that within a period of X lifetimes we have most of the answers is less useful than a 5-year-old who things he knows everything.

In short, Scientists should try to make any certain claim about deific existance because they don't have any true evidence either way. Maybe about particular relgious items, but not the overall concept. Religions shouldn't make any assumptions about scientific theories clashing with divine plan either, for the same damn reason (what man could know the mind of God).
