  1. Play the bloody game first on Realism vs. Style: the Zelda Debate · · Score: 1

I've played a fair number of games that had good graphics and still had darn good gameplay and plot etc. Gameplay and graphics are not mutually exclusive, it's just that too much compensation tends to occur between the two.

Play the game first, then if it sucks, complain. Chances are while you're busy whining I'll be enjoying my good gameplay and awesome graphics, because the series has yet to dissappoint me...

  2. Civil can be in ways punitive on Intel Replies to AMD Antitrust Lawsuits · · Score: 1

There are cases where families sue the bejesus out of offenders after a loved one was killed. It doesn't compensate the loss, but rather is in a way financial punishment on the offender (see OJ).

  3. Partly true on Intel Replies to AMD Antitrust Lawsuits · · Score: 1

Intel chips "were" faster and more stable... on software compiled with the intel compiler (see previous articles). This is one of the reasons AMD is sueing intel... because they made the compiler product AMD-unfriendly code.

  4. Relief funds? on Technology In Katrina's Wake · · Score: 2, Interesting

I'm not really sure about donating to any things like 'relief funds' for the very reason that many helpful organizations are burocracies (sp?) that tend to get very little capital to the end recipients (the victims).

That's bad enough, but add to this the scamming bastards and others (gas companies anyone) taking advantage of this disaster... and I wish I could pay somebody to break the knees of these scammers. I hope that the government pays very close attention to the popular scam sites, and makes a very, very strong example of them... like maybe dropping them in the middle of New Orleans survivors and letting everyone know about their scammy websites...

  5. Taxes? on Apple Is Accused of Violating Software Patent · · Score: 1

How about the take them away from the so-called "war on terror" and focus on fixing things like the broken USPTO and many others. Taxes don't need to be increased because money is lacking, it's because it's being spent in the wrong places.

  6. If you break the law on Intel Replies to AMD Antitrust Lawsuits · · Score: 1

Does it matter who (if anyone) gets hurt? Granted penalties might be lesser, but a law broken is still a law broken, and Intel should be held responsible.

  7. AMD has their own circles on Intel Replies to AMD Antitrust Lawsuits · · Score: 1

It's not like AMD is a cheaper-and-suckier, they do make a good-quality product. In many cases their product is as good as, or better than Intel's, but they lack the production and PR. Also, AMD has nailed 64-bit technology, and when more take advantage of it (specifically servers needing more than 4GB of RAM) AMD will rise.

  9. Crappy theatre on Blizzard/Vivendi 2, bnetd 0 · · Score: 2, Insightful

If this were the case, then one of the major reasons for starting your own 'theatre' would be because the main theatre is full of whiney, disruptive assholes, is ill-maintained, and is not always available.

Despite the proliferation of other uses, bnetd was beloved by many because it was convenient, private, and oftimes more reliable than the public servers. Certain other games allow for private servers that authenticate to the primary... why can't Blizzard just make this a requirement to keep out the hacked CD-keys but allow private hosts?

  10. Timeouts? on Blizzard/Vivendi 2, bnetd 0 · · Score: 2, Insightful

Well, I haven't been on bnet much in the last month, but frankly about 1 in 3 or more games (warcraft III) tend to have at least one player time out because of bnet lag or server issues. It's wonderful that blizzard supplies bnet for free in most games, but given the lack of stability sometimes an alternative solution would be better.

  11. Compiling source modules on Vanilla Kernel 2.6 Stability vs 2.4? · · Score: 1

The biggest problems I have with using a very-recent kerenl is that sometimes some of the not-included modules which I need to compile from source just don't seem to like my newer kernel. At the moment I'm having a bugger of a time getting 'unionfs' to compile with a 2.6.13 kernel, and I do remember at one time that my NVidia drivers didn't like certain 2.6 kernels either.

Once something compiles though, I generally don't have kernel problems with common hardware.

  12. Digital security on Mazda Switches To USB Keys · · Score: 1

Except in the case of my keys it wouldn't do much without the chip embedded in the original that enables the ignition... and lots of newer cars support this.

With this, all I need is a laptop or similar usb-enabled device, so it's not just cost but ease-of-copying involved here.

  13. Regeneration time on Australian Science Makes the Regenerating Mouse · · Score: 1

If regeneration occured a-la-Xmen wolverine-style, yes. But I'm guessing that the regeneration, particularly of large organs, is still a process that takes time. In this case it could be used to help wounded soldiers recover, but not more so than anyone else with a major wound.

  15. Isn't anyone getting sick of this on Microsoft to Launch "Skype Killer" · · Score: 1

New technology comes out, becomes popular. Microsoft tries to implement their own version of new technology, but usually incompatible with other products. For OS-based tech, MS becomes popular as it is integrated into the operating system... competitor loses ground not because of lack-of-quality but simple lack-of-recognition against MS integration.

This is a little different than MS-vs-Google. In that case, most browsers have already been configured with a start page, and new machines usually have their manufacturer's website as the start page. Google is already a phenomenoa in itself as well.

In many ways Skype and VOIP are still establishing themselves outside of certain circles. Having a big "you can call long-distance-for-cheap" feature come blazing in through messenger would ensure much faster recognition/visibility for the MS product.

Wasn't this part of the issue in anti-trust? Yet MS continues to steal other people's good ideas, flatten the original companies, and not come up with much of anything new on their own.

  16. Poison, etc, etc on Nintendo Patents Insanity · · Score: 1

Indeed... simply seeing bad things and thus going insane is rather unusual to implement. However, doing a similar thing as an effect from being hit by say a poison or neurotoxin (cumulative hallucination as you are hit by various toxic enemies) would be rather cool, make sense, and not be covered by the patent.

I'm sure if you wanted to go to the trouble you could do a lot of things. You could borrow an audiobook and copy it on loopback without the DRM too, the DRM is not there so much to prevent copying in this case as to ensure it is "returned" in a virtual sense.

I've been administrating 'nix machines in a semi-large environment for several years now and would consider myself quite competent. At my current job we (the techs) will be taking a test that asserts how much we really know. For myself I'm more experienced than many of the others, but I learned a few neat tricks from studying. However, there are also many parts to the test that look to be simply archaic or not useful to what I do. Certainly I wouldn't touch sendmail with a 100-foot-pole (there are much better replacements out there) and any exam where you have to memorize flags and other details which would be very easily available from manyfiles or a --help option just doesn't sit well with me.

  21. Dungeon Keeper on Devs Weigh In On Playing The Bad Guy · · Score: 1

One of my favorite games was DK2 (why no sequel guys??). In dungeon keeper you play as the "keeper" basically an evil overlord who controls a warren of imps and other nasty little creatures. You have to tunnel through to the "heroes" base and then capture various items or remove key players.

The heroes themselves seem like the pompous or inept types (like Farquad from Shrek), and overall the experience is that it's very good to be evil....

I can't recommend it from experience, but I would trust the advice of this particular individual.
