I work in schools, so that's a government entity. I specifically took down the mailto links from our main website due to spam issues (they've been replaced with a "mail me" script/textbox combo). Obviously for many this is less convenient that just clicking and having a mail client ready-to-send.

As for SPAM, light spam filtering is capturing 7-10k spams in a month...

End result, spam is costing us resources. Resources are money, and therefore they are costing the government money. Why wouldn't gov't want to do such a thing is what boggles my mind, surely the US gov't and their various agencies is dealing with sh*tloads of spam issues as well.

While I am a strong Open-Source-Software user myself, I've found that quite often some of the biggest points of contention between the users and developers come with UI design/enhancements. If it's a programmatic bugfix the developers are happy to fix it, but if it's a UI/usability fix/change most developers seem to get their hackles up.

Developers of projects like the GIMP make a UI have long ignored user requests for things like an IDE environment, and when pushed both the developers and power users alike tend to get contentious.

Of course GIMP is just one example, many programs are like this. In the case of having something simple like an IDE, how hard would it be to simple allow an option to turn it on. It would satisfy both new and power-users, and put an end to many a flamewar...

  6. Was this compounded or what? on Online Cigarette Customers Get Bill from State · · Score: 2, Informative

I'm wondering if this had added fines, compounded interest, or something else funky. As per the headline "One pack-a-day smoker received a bill for $2,500 in back taxes."
If you look at the cost, assuming a 5% tax:

    $2500 / 0.05 = $50000

So effectively, this person bought $50,000 in cigs? That's more than a lot of people make in a year. Yes, I have friend that smoke a lot, but I have a hard time imaging any regular person being able to afford smoking that much in a year's period, or possibly even 2-3 years. So how long do these "back-taxes" actually go?

Once I see how well the AMD products (including the motherboards for the chip, etc) work with linux I may consider a switch. At 400Mhz equivilent they could do nicely for servers and the video capabilities would make them decent enough for small media units. Wonder how well they would handle DVD, etc playback and TV out... as my M10000 does quite nicely for that with fairly low CPU consumption.

While I'm a regular user of OO, I found that while working on my resume that it was nicely mangling my tables. Saving in an older word format seemed to fix that, but it was definately uglified compared to something written in actual MS-Word.

In native OO format it was fine, but since I was making this resume copy for monster.com (which only accepts text or .doc), I pretty much had to install a real copy of word to get proper results (and believe me, when you're job-hunting you want your resume to look as good as possible).

It would be nice if monster would support PDF or some other format, but for the moment if I want to submit a proper resume there I'll have to use word (and yes, my productivity desktop of choice is linux).

  10. WiFi is evolving on WiMax Technology Could Blanket the US? · · Score: 1

WiFi is still an evolving technology. Over time new standards are being developed, and speeds are increasing.

Wired ethernet is also still improving, but it has hit a point where the existing standard is fairly solid.

Given this, and the very real possibility of security/interference/etc issues with WiFi, I think that building a large infastructure around it is a bit premature. Internet isn't a necesary service, and offices can generally afford to pay for their own. Having the gov't etc pay out billions for such a tech is not justified at this point (besides, it will probably get cheaper over time).

On the other hand, I and some of my colleages feel a heavy sense of defeat when dealing with certain administrative problems. That is, we present a good solution, but those that don't understand the technicality of said solution go with another (usually cheaper) solution that ends up being a pain-in-the-butt to maintain (and often less cost-effective in the long-run). That's stress pressure though.

Another thing that gets to most people I know is the "endless cycle" of pressures. That is, when everyone has a different problem and they're also harranging on you that they issue is critical. They can actually all be problems that individually are easy to deal with and not overly stressful, but when you look at all you have to do by day's end you foresee working a little over and probably having an apple for lunch while banging on the keyboard through break...
