Have you ever spent 6 hours or more removing spyware from a Windows computer?
Cleaned a windows computer? Frequently
Spent 6 hours doing so? Nope, why devote that much time to it?
If I'm working on a computer at a clients house and it will take more than an hour I try and take it with me and let them know I'm just going to bill them for an hour and a half Once it is at my desk I stick in whatever liveCD I have laying around (I might throw in a network card if it doesn't have one) and backup the system over FTP. Then I restore the OS and return any of the backed up files that check out as clean. It takes much less time than cleaning on most systems.
I can't imagine devoting six hours to one system. Using my approach I spend maybe two hours actively with the system the rest of the time I'm working on other systems on the desk.
To comment on Open Source. I never suggest any software without being asked. At that point it's worth laying out options, explaining why things are free, etc.. Most people get used to their system being one way...even their desktop shortcuts not moving. People become highly efficient with what they are used to, the learning curve is too great even on the "simple stuff."
I clicked on your link and I found nothing indicating bias on that page. Got a link to something worth reading? Oh and please not that same tired old quote about delivering the votes for Bush
In my county our electronic voting machines are setup along these lines:
Since they are reused for every election the machines themselves are nothing more than glorified adding machines with only a 1 button.
The supervisor of elections oversees the creation of each e-ballot for each precinct.
This means the machine has no knowledge prior to the election who is running, what party they are affiliated with, etc..
The ballot itself is transferred via infrared onto a cartridge from a central machine, then onto the voting machine and after a vote is cast, back to a cartridge back to the machine where votes are tallied.
So, it's not as though these companies know how each precinct is going to layout their ballots.
The first question on my machine was not who I wanted for president but if I truly was who I'd said I was.
In any case, I find these conspiracy theories about e-voting machines being rigged for Bush entertaining. And yes I am aware of the diebold quote about delivering votes for Bush, so please don't post it again. If I really want to read it I'm sure I can find it in another comment on this story.
It's not the least bit cuirous. The Republican party had a tremendous get out the vote effort (for once) while the Democratic party had a tough time this year. Kerry wasn't a candidate people were fired up about.
Maybe the ignorant, impoverished Democrats couldn't figure out how to use these new-fangled electronic deals.
C'mon leave FL alone. We were the ass in 2000. Enough Democratic reitrees have died since then and we were able to have a reasonably fair election this time. Shouldn't we be picking on the buckeye farmers or something?
Just yesterday I had a conversation with a friend of mine from Edinborough. He had come to the conclusion that we in the states will do anything for the sake of convenience. I don't know if that is true as my perspective on this is not great. In this circumstance his point might be that until public transit is more convenient than driving your own vehicle, we in the states won't really embrace public transit.
Sure there are tons of other infrastructure issues so my comments are an oversimplification.
I'm local to Hillsborough and all day we've been hearing about this stoppage.
Sinkholes are a buzz word because they are a (forgive the pun) a money pit for insurance companies. Potholes, ditches and everything else where the ground is unlevel can be dubbed as sinkholes. That is not to say we don't have sinkholes, but nowhere near as many as are reported. It is a large enough problem that some zip codes are blocked out of renters insurance due to sinkhole problems, but Verizon hasn't been running around and draining pockets of the water table.
The real headline should be:
Verizon has morons digging trenches.
I'm waiting for an article tomorrow detailing how the slashdot community saved the world from the evils of SCO by jamming up our court system with convoluted, time-consuming cases. It almost makes me want to pursue the idea of being reimbersed for the microsoft tax.
SCO is also demanding a nickel from everyone that has ever used, thought about using or will use an electronic device since all have the potential to run "stolen code"
in other news...
SCO is happy to report that name-recognition has increased 200 fold since requiring most people to throw money at them.
wear a 15-inch flat-screen TV on his chest Hmm...maybe this can solve the expensive display problem for my wearable computer. How long until you can go hang out at the mall and the "internet guy" stops by. Well, at least they're not wearing some objectionable game like GTA3.

I love living in a country that allows freedom of belief. I believe I would like to kick you squarely in the groin!
I believe the election in FL is as fair as the Berkley analysis of said election.

This seems to backup your theory.
I strongly second that. For your particular situation wouldn't Audacity get the job done?
Damn you unique design!!! 1. originality sucks 2. be a mindless follower 3. profit
yes, and that is why I have decided to run for governor of the state of California
so how long until your birthday and you're old enough to drink?
well damn... how are we to know which server we should try and slashdot with so many links?

Had he written the same thing on Slashdot it would have simply been marked as flamebait and forgotten about.
The one that really gets me is when the option of Aetheist is listed as a religion. What's that about? Anyone else tripped out by that one?
