Half-baked port of.NET to Linux w/ large licence costs.
That would be Mono then. to allow Linux to be a node in network managed by XP.
And that one would be Samba! New 'Services for Linux', half-baked Linux layer for NT.
Or how about Services for UNIX? Already up to version 3.5. Apart from that a very reasoned out comment.
I have written a story about an embittered ex-Microsoft employee who now works for a company related to raising funds for non-profit organisations and complains about the fact that his job is made harder by his ex-bosses not contributing enough! Oh... you beat me to it.
Actually the allied powers made extensive use of the Axis research projects after the war. One example was Unit 731, responsible for the research and development of biological weapons through human testing. Not only were the perpetrators not prosecuted for war crimes, Shiro Ishii, the commandant was given a job by the US military! Makes you wonder what that fight for decency was all about really doesn't it?
Erm... just did a search on the Dell web site and got this, seems like Dell do alternative OS platforms, even if they don't promote them quite the way they should.
Especially in a world where the most popular portable music player (iPod) doesn't even support the format!
And I would guess that an analysis of numbers of media servers out there could well find that there is a reasonably even split between QuickTime, Windows Media and Real (Couldn't Google any stats on this, so feel free to correct me!)
I know that Real's complaint was actually about the fact that they felt people would prefer their product given a level playing field (erm... yeah), but a lot of people I know that run Windows still have all 3 main players installed, just for access to media-based web sites if nothing else, so I guess having just one of them pre-installed didn't make that much difference to their habits. BTW, I don't know of anyone who has actually PAID for a media player for a long time now.
I would guess that the crucial word in the decision is "interoperability", nothing there that says they have to let another OS run their software, just connect to it.
Th proposal in the article is that every body that is rounded by it's own gravity (apparently this happens at a few hundred kilometres) should be considered a planet. Actually sounds a reasonable definition to me.
When Jesus says "believe in me and you shall be saved", he is condemning non-believers to hell.
This is a false syllogism. It is no more true than me saying "if you follow me off that cliff you will die", it is true, but it doesn't mean that if you don't you will live forever.
Nowhere in the phrase you quoted does Jesus mention what happens to people who DON'T believe in him, only what happens to people who do.
Not sure this makes much difference either way, just my $0.02.
In that case they should be falling over themselves to pre-install Linux instead to get the 100% discount that would give them.
The reason that they aren't is that they know (at the moment) that the marketplace is still demanding that Windows be pre-installed on their machines. All you really need is someone with the guts to make a stand and say "OK... no more Windows" (stands back and waits for the rush by Dell, HP, IBM et al......... hmmmmm)
I actually doubt that even beating OS X will dramatically improve hardware support:(
Apple produced their own, very restricted, range of hardware (in terms of graphics cards etc) and then persuade (pay?) manufacturers to produce drivers. Look at the latest ATI cards... out of the entire 9x00 range of Radeon cards only two (9800 Pro and 9000 Pro) currently have official drivers produced for them, compared to five for Windows (and that isn't including the Pro, XT versions etc.).
I suspect that at some point the Linux community may have to compromise and accept greater use of binary-only drivers in exchange for their hardware support being stronger than it currently is.
I am sure that there will always be those members of the Open Source community who would shun this and quite happily stick to cards that are possibly a generation behind in order to have open drivers. Unfortunately I don't have the strength to follow those principles, I just want my computer to do it's job and if that means compromise on whether I can see the source, then so be it (not that I would understand the source anyway you understand).
On the otherside, Microsoft creats C#, sells it for a hell of a lot of money
I assume you mean apart from the freely available command line version or the fact that the language is open (as demonstrated by MONO)? As for a developers network how about MSDN??
The UK weather sucks, it rains more and is colder than in Belgium.
Not according to here, where you can find statistics stating that Brussels is on average both colder and wetter than London.
I can't comment on transport, I've never needed to use it in Belgium.;)
The UK is insular compared to the cultural mix in Belgium.
Having lived on a street where there were no less (and probably more) than five first languages spoken I would doubt that Belgium is any more culturally diverse than the UK.
Belgian girls are way cuter than British girls
Personally, I've found cute girls in just about every country I've been to, in around the same proportions.
There are some good beers in the UK these days but they're largely inspired by Belgian brews
I'm sure if you looked round you could find plenty of British "real ales" that AREN'T inspired by Belgium.
Brussels is 1.5 hours by train [snip] from London
Journeys work in both directions.
Belgium has a relaxed attitude to soft drugs
A policy that is being rapidly adopted by the UK at the moment.
We do not believe it's our moral obligation to topple foreign dictators just because they pull faces at us.
Not according to the hardware you sent to Iraq in the last gulf war.
Can I get this straight, the main reason the MS Update shouldn't be done through the web browser is purely because other operating systems don't do it that way? Interesting call!
"SunnComm's management feels you need to understand these very important facts prior to making a decision to invest in the company's shares, and you should also be totally aware that you run the risk of losing your entire investment should you make the decision to purchase shares in SunnComm."
They said it....
Nobody will ever need more than 1 Gig of RAM!
Hmmm...Sounds familiar!

Sorry, I responded to what you said, not what you were thinking. :D
Actually (assuming you are on about PC World in the UK) they sell 5 different varieties of Linux from SUSE and Mandrake.

HA! That's where you are wrong, you lousy venusi......SPLAT!
apologies for the above, ignore me, I am an idiot and waaay too tired to be bothered thinking straight!
But drunks would have breezed through it :)

Try http://www.interopsystems.com/tools/warehouse.htm. Not only PostgreSQL, but a load of other stuff too!
Or even worse, the alternative to popups, where Clippy jumps up and says "it appears you have a sexual disfunction, can I help you with that?"
try...
