Well, actually there has been reported to be a can of spam travelling at near light speed somewhere past the asteroid belt. Although to someone travelling with the spam it would only appear to be a couple of years old, it appears to be thousands of years old to us on Earth...

The only question now is... how long until the MPAA comes after slashdot for this? Yikes!

This reminds me of an Avengers episode I saw once (you know Avengers, the great British show with Steed and Mrs. Peel). I think this episode was called The Pos-Neg Man or something like that. Anyway, these scientists were researching wireless electricity (they called it 'broadcast power'). The bad guys drove a creapy blue van around and beamed power to this guy with rubber boots and an insulating power on him, and he walked around shocking and killing people.

Well, I doubt this is really as dangerous as all that, but just made me think back to fond memories...

I would really love to see any of these Matrix movies, even the 1st one, in an IMAX theatre. It would just be totally intense! (Unless you are prone to motion sickness...)

The problem is, the only IMAX theatre in my area is the one at the zoo. I somehow doubt that they will be showing the Matrix up there.

Let's see- coming up next is Dolphins Unleashed, then The World of Rainforests, then Monkeys on the Move, and then, ooh the Matrix! Mommy I want to see that one!

Has anyone on /. got the Doom III demo to run smoothly? My friend has a relatively new AMD Athlon XP 2100+ with 512 megabytes of RAM on an ASUS nForce 2 motherboard, and he was getting like 2 frames per second or something ridiculous. The zombies were mawling him before he could even move his gun!!! It was funny, because in the intro we would here scary monster noises, but the graphic of the monster wouldn't be displayed until about 1 minute later. That is how far behind the graphics got behind the sound! But I must say that the graphics were beautiful.

ps this is on Windows 2000 with dx9.

  15. Hotmail on Spam Research Six Month Report · · Score: 2, Interesting
I think if the government or something was to just do a raid on Hotmail servers and shut them all down, this would cause a heavy reduction on the amount of spam. It is amazing how much my Hotmail account receives. If I don't check the account for a whole day, the account will reach the storage limit and bounce incoming e-mail.

PS if anybody needs some good spam to help Mozilla Bayesian Junk Mail filters learn, just set up a Hotmail account and copy those e-mails into Mozilla :)

  21. piracy on Office Depot: Windows XP Apps Must Be Microsoft-Approved · · Score: 2, Interesting

Won't this just increase the rate at which software is pirated? Although the change would be small, any means of restricting the legal purchas of software will lead more people to pirate software. If someone who wanted to buy a legal copy of a piece of software that wasn't "Designed for Windows XP" (whatever that means) and they couldn't find it at Office Depot, they may just say "oh well I tried" and pirate it.

I have always found this type of game to be rather odd. Isn't social interaction what you are supposed to be doing in real life? Why would you want to play a game of what you do in real life? Now blowing up aliens or shooting up Nazis... that is cool, because you can't do it in everyday reality.

After these incidences and others, Sony got a very bad reputation in my eye. One day, the 3.5" floppy drive in my computer broke. I was like, wtf, that never happens! Sure enough, I open up the case, and it was a Sony floppy drive! Hah...

  25. Good in the long run on Mozilla Project Hurt by Apple's Decision to use KH · · Score: 2, Insightful
As far as I am concerned, this will be a good thing for Open Source and the Web in the long run. I think that Open Source is all about the choice to use the program that does what is best for your needs.

Mozilla is great, but the kHTML project is also good and definitely worthy competition to Gecko. The competition, and even a rivalry to some extent, will cause make developers for both projects work harder to maintain "an edge." Just as the competition between KDE and Gnome promotes a better windowing environment, hopefully this competition will improve the rendering capabilities of open-source browsers.
