Fair points. Wave may indeed be successfully used in collaboration products like Pulse, and that would be good. But for me that would still be a very disappointing outcome and is what I had in mind when I wrote 'languishing in obscurity'. The great promise and potential, which sadly won't be fulfilled, was for collaboration and communication across broader communities beyond one company or group of friends.
There's nothing stopping someone from setting up a service similar to Google Wave using the open source implementation. Let us get version 1.0 out the door and we'll see what happens:)
The protocols themselves are open and yes it allows distributed servers. Wave In A Box, the reference implementation is one such project and there are a small number of us who are running testing versions of this server.

You have looked at the US government lately haven't you? Just wanted to make sure you weren't looking into some sort of alternate universe US, where things like imprisonment without trial and warrantless phone tapping are considered "bad things" by the government.

What we have is an 800kg gorilla in the shape of the previously state run telco sitting on a tonne of dark fibre as well as the existing network saying that unless the government lets them price their competition out of existance for access to their network, they're just going to do nothing.
They let the Vista team design them and it takes em five years to release something only to realise that you're going to need a small nuclear reactor to provide enough power for it and that no body really wants it.
What about how Chimps hunt and kill Colobus monkeys, and even engage in warfare with other groups of Chimps?
Hmm, they beat up on weaker groups, fight for their territory and have been known to kill for the fun of it. Combine that with their ability to learn sign language and communicate basic abstract concepts, sounds pretty damn human to me.
See the problem with this approach is it doesn't deal with those who are running sans desktop.
dist-upgrade has always been a valid tool and the fact that its broken in the later editions of Ubuntu is something that needs to be seriously looked at.
