The ribbon crap is beyond worthless and at best eye candy. I despise it and Microsoft for forcing it down my Windows workstation and I certainly don't want to see it on my open-source software.
They may not be unique, but it certainly is not common. I have had to move for 3 jobs and and had interviewed for at least 3 jobs. None of them offered and all the jobs for outside my immediate area stated it up front. It was a rare company for me(I am a programmer) that was willing to offer moving reimbursement.
I had a job with a company that had a problem with management. They went in two waves, the first was when the deadlines for a new system were unrealistic and he said he was going to fire people to get on track. The manager got fired but 6 people left for new jobs within two weeks.
The second wave occurred when the new manager decided to change the from Ruby to.NET in mid-project. 6 people left within two weeks of that decision and all of them had found work somewhere else.
So in the course of 8 months, 12 out of 15 developers had left for immediately greener pastures. So I would consider it a very realistic threat.
In other words, help your manager do their job instead of you doing yours.
That is why you do employee evaluations, to see the good, the bad and the ugly. All your talking about is self-promotion in the guise of productivity. It may make your managers job easier but it is has nothing to do with productivity, competence or effectiveness.
His advice seems to be "If you are a great programmer, you still have to get out and market". Jesus freaking Christ, can't companies do employee evaluations at all? It is like these guys think marketing is the best way to do everything.
Got a crappy product, market more; Sued for incompetence? Create a press release.
So your what you are saying is that one of the largest web service companies cannot figure out how to design a web architecture to support database sessioning because it is hard? How long have they been doing this stuff?
For them to complain they cannot do it is like GM complaining their cars suck because they don't understand how to make a cars. The reality is both companies know what to do, they just don't want to spend the money. It is must easier to fix the blame than fix the problem.
I don't understand, if you skip all the text referring to someone "smoothing out her split riding skirt" you could have probably saved a couple of volumes.
Quality is a perceived value which can be hard to attach a price tag too. This applies especially to individuals who don't necessarily have a long term base line to guess what that quality is worth. Fashion on the other... You either in the IN crowd or your on slashdot cursing how expensive and out of touch Apple users are.
If the costs were the only thing that matter then you would have a valid point. However, amount of work that is contributed by someone should also be taken into account. If a healthy skinny person lives 10 years longer than a smoker, how much does that person contribute to society?
To put it more plainly, a person who costs $417,000 in health care but contributes $200,000 more over the course of their life is more desirable than the smoker who costs $326,000.
my boss would show up in my office (effectively destroying the block of time I was saving), and then he'd tell me about 5 more projects brought up in the meeting that were automatically approved
I started showing up at meetings pronto to "keep the company on track with IT and software projects".
I hate to point this out, but is that not what your boss is supposed to be doing, keeping track of projects? I sounds like you are the manager and you report to a putz who gets too large a paycheck.
Your not risky the life of a pilot who can take hundreds of hours to train properly
A modern plane can do more than a pilot can physically handle so are better vehicles without a pilot
Don't require a full scale airport or carrier to land/launch from. Landing on an aircraft carrier is one of the most difficult tasks a pilot has to accomplish regularly. A drone can be launched from a small ship and who cares if it lands intact again.
Fighters are needed less and less now a days, if we want air superiority we can just put up dozens of cheap drones with Air-to-Air missiles with remote pilots. I am pretty sure they would not cost $100+ millions each either.
The question is whether they learn anything or not.
Some people will repeat the exact same mistakes if they are unable to self-evaluate. They not only have to identify mistakes but also the proper way to do something. It does not have help if they try something different at the next job and that is wrong too.
The fact is, most places are replacing the story with special effects. Why? I think it has to do with corporate types who like to be able to see and understand what they are working on.
Special effects? You can show these guys a clip of this great looking water for 10 seconds and there will be ohhs and ahhs all over.
Try to show them the story line for a game that will make a game last for 20 to 30 hours? That means they would have to pay attention for a certain length of time.
While they are referring to pron in the article, I believe this also applies to games. I prefer games where there is some sort of progression or storyline, which is why I have not bought a new computer game in like 2 years.
Ah! Project Managers, the turd polishers of the IT world.
Don't know enough to collect business requirements, and yet unable to write a "Hello world!" program. Yet they still manage to slip themselves into the middle and get paid more than their customers OR programmers!
There is also, no implicit promise that the company that purchases the information will NOT sell it to others. Just that they are in the same business.
The worse thing you can do is move some place realize you don't like the job after a few years and your only option for finding a new job is to move again. If you are not happy working for Wal-Mart in Bentonville, or you get laid-off good luck finding another position there for someone else.
I worked form one of these stock photography companies and I would completely agree with this statement. Photographers are paid 30 cents per download per customer. On the other hand the stock photography company charges anywhere from $1 to $50 for that same image.
Considering the technology is relatively simple and they are not generating the product, there is a lot of money that goes into management, marketing and sales. Of course these are the people that create the illusion that they are needed to sell this product.
I blame the baby-boomers, they were raised on idea of continual gain of benefits. Whether it was from capitalism, increased government benefits, or lower taxes. They continually have driven everything out of total self interest an screw society.
You say I am crazy? It was not my generation that,
Came up with sub-prime mortgages and issued them to people with no money
Speculated on do nothing on Internet companies in the hope of easy money
Bought and sold under funded financial derivatives
Removed bank regulations that were intended to prevent the current financial crisis
Exported ALL manufacturing from the US to other countries
Have greatly increased executive pay WITHOUT a corresponding increase in profits
Paying the lowest tax rates in the last 70 years
Issued the highest amount of government debt in 70 years
Sharp cut social programs, especially for the poor
I may be generalizing about baby boomers as a whole, but the leadership from my generation has not become CEOs, congressmen or senators, the baby boomers have.
Please god NOOOO!!!!!

Yes, this crap bothers me.

The first set of explorers are to seed the planet with their corpses so that the next wave will have something to eat.

Don't believe me? Here is a nice article on the subject.

And considering the available men, it is unfavorable to women too!

New Achievement: Style of the Time Age 60+ while wearing or talking about wearing an onion on your belt.
Correction, "money TODAY wins".
Any business that relies on 'Sales' making business decisions about other departments is one of the first signs the business is starting to fail.
I used to get high on life
Me too, but then I registered on /. and discovered I had no life.
get rid of kdawson and ScuttleMonkey
Now that would be an Achievement worth going for!
