It truly is like diablo 2 as has been pointed out before.
All the checks are there except for the massive.
Doesn't mean it ain't an intresting game. BTW you are aware that the game developers themselves don't claim it is an MMO either are you?
You are going to run a Sony piece of hardware as a linux machine. You think that might not make Sony very happy. Now think a little bit further. Who might not like it as well? Does the word Wintel mean anything to you?
Cause you would be running a IBM/Linux desktop NOT the everpresent Wintel setup. I think Sony would like it because MicroSoft would totally not like it.
It is offcourse unlikely that this will have any effect but at least something is being tried.
Not having access to specs never stopped homebrew before. Just check what is out there. Oh sure it takes time but that is because usually you got to fight the system first. This time the system is "open".
No it may not be documented but if "amateurs" can emulate consoles from scratch and put homebrew software on hardware that tries to fight them then I don't think this will be too much of a problem.
What I wonder is not the access to libraries but to the hardware. Will the Cell really be fully available?
I think Sony is experimenting. They know MS owns the PC and they can do little about it but perhaps just maybe sometime in the future all of a sudden another OS they do not have to develop themselves might just make inroads.
If it fails, then they lost nothing. If it succeeds. Well who knows what might happen.
If PS3 sells like the PS2 AND it does become a viable linux computer then that would give MS the serious jitters. You can't tell me Sony wouldn't like that.
Remember MS siding with Nintendo against Sony? Might be because they too think Sony has designs other then on having the best selling console.
We will just have to see what really happens but for now lets keep an open mind. Whatever sony is trying it is way more then the other console companies have done to allow amateurs to develop for their machines.
I don't think so. The page loads in links and gives you the option to download. So google for the win!
Yes the in browser player is flash and is indeed evil and mean and nasty and kills puppies for fun.
But you can also just download it in several other formats. As I pointed out already. If you can't play any of the available movie formats. Well then that sucks. Serves you right for having a fancy CPU.
Both use flash (wich opera has a problem with at the moment at least under linux, something to do with how flash requests the video) but google also allows you to download the file in several formats.
So you can play it in a decent player with some filters to make it look good. The difference in quality (at least on linux) is staggering.
Youtube has the tagging wich makes it easier to find stuff.
I think they only care as far as needed. Do a search for Morning Musume (a jpop girl group) on youtube or video.google and you will find a shitload of vids most of them copyrighted.
So they definitly ain't removing the stuff on their own. Granted the japanese do call Music Videos Promotional Videos instead and who would object to the freehosting of ads but still.
I think this stuff is too new for the copyright owners to have woken up yet. Just wait for it.
It is very hard to get across the difference between a properly coded site and one made by some kid who knows some scripting language.
The simplest is browser compatability. Does the site owner care? Well yeah if you can get their head around the fact that if the site is IE only they will be losing a percentage of customers. It is very odd. Supermarkets understand they need an extra wide register for people with special needs. They know they need staff on hand to help disabled people because no supermarket can afford to turn that tiny percentage of people away who need help. Most brick and mortar stores would be horrified to learn that their to narrow door would loose them say 5% of visitors. So why is it acceptable on the net?
Then their is the proper use of standards. It ain't just that you got to use CSS but more that you got to choose a standard way of doing things. Use font tags if you want BUT then ALWAYS use them. Not some horrid combo of font tags, inline css, external css and included css. Makes it a pain to figure out what the fuck is supposed to affect what.
Finally there is the coding itself. Every damn time I get called into to fix a site I find that some kiddie has hacked it together and totally forget to do any kind of error checking let alone proper security. Most just take values straight from the user and insert them into sql queries. And why does anyone create a login page for the site CMS without https being enforced?
I seen code that would make you weep. Yet the site works doesn't it. Well no that is why I am called in but it then is very hard to explain why you need a week to upgrade the site before you can even start fixing things. (Note that the sites are generally so poorly designed that the original builders are no longer willing to support it wich is when I get involved).
But how do you explain to the customer about the difference between bad code and good code.
Recent page had a simple form for the usual add, update and deleting of a record. The code contained no functions and had the most horribly arranged IF/ELSE statements you could imagine (IF(user_logged_in) {ALL THE CODE} else {error_msg} EWH!!!!!
Worse it had the HTML/FORM 3 times for each type of action. Except that they were practically the same. Just an empty form for add, a filled in form for update and again a filled in form for delete. 3 Times the same HTML all because the idiot never grasped the concept of functions. (He didn't use them anywhere in the code).
Yet how do you make this clear to the customer. If you know the answer please tell me.
For the price of an iPod I can buy a cheaper MP3 player AND have money left over to buy music.
For the price of a BMW I can buy a lada AND have money left over for gas.
For the price of an armani I can by a C&A suit AND have money left over rent.
The only thing that matters is IF the PS3 will be considered worth the price. ALL the consoles have been expensive at launch and you could always buy a cheaper console.
By your logic the gamecube should have done much better. Even today I can buy that one and games for the price of its competitors.
So why didn't the gamecube do better then? Because price don't matter. Ask iRiver why their cheaper players (some would even say better players) not sell as well as Apples offerings?
Because people consider the iPod worth the extra money.
Check for a moment the price of the video iPod and now check its specs vs something like the PS3. Price don't stop people. Never has, never will. Oh people will rant about it being to expensive but that is all good. The only reason you care something is too expensive is if you want it. That means they will have you when the first price cut is announced.
Just check the price a DS Lite goes for. 2x the price of a gamecube. Yet they can't keep the damn things in stock. People WILL pay.
Not very tolerant it seems, you don't seem to tolerate the rich at all and their ideologies at all do you?
So why should they tolerate you?
You remind me a bit of the homeless guy ranting about people being slaves to their jobs but also expecting handouts from them. One thing or ther other dude.
A revolution works or not depending on wich side the army takes. Do you really think even the best armed civilian has a chance against a trained soldier? Think again.
Check all the big one, the army joined the side of the citizens. The one I know for certain that had just the citizens fighting was the polish uprising at the end of WW2. They gave the germans a though fight BUT they were doomed to loose the moment it become clear the soviet army was not going to help them (nor the western armies for that matter).
Enjoy your false believe in the fact that owning a pistol keeps you free. An unarmed man shot down by the state is a freedom fighter. A man with a gun shot down by the state is a terrorist.
For people with a reasonable income 600 dollars just ain't that much. Yes it is a shit load of money for kids still living with their parents BUT the newest systems have always cost a shitload of money. If you adjust for inflation how much did home computers like the C64 cost in our youth? Way more then I could afford as a kid that is for certain. In my memory in fact just as unreachable as 600 dollars would be to a kid today.
Yet if I look at my computer now. Well, this is an old dual P3 kayak. Second hand but still set me back 400 euros and that was a steal. My gaming rig however has components that cost around 500 dollars a piece. Have you seen those quad sli cards? check their prices and all of a sudden the PS3 seems a steal.
Remember back when widescreens tv's started to appear? They cost easily in the range of 10.000 guilders (5000 euros) at the time. Did they have trouble selling? Not really.
The PS3 is a gamble. It is going to be clearly the most expensive system on the market. The question is only if people are willing to pay it. Is the system going to be worth it for the early adopters (cause you can bet the price will drop within a few months).
IF Sony can deliver some killer games then people will fork over the cash.
The only caveat is that people must still have the money. If the rumors are true that it is going to launch AFTER christmas then Sony might just learn that the first months of the year are very bad for retail as everyone spend their money on the holidays.
That I think is their biggest threat. They need to launch in the west before the shopping season. That means as early as the 5th of december for holland. Don't and people will already have bought their kids a different system.
What follows below is a long boring comparisson of the DS and the PSP. Why? Because I think at the end it shows exactly wich company will have the best console to buy for you. Oh alright, I will save you reading my drivel. The best console is the console that has the games you want to play. I think Wii vs PS3 will be just like the handhelds. You can discuss hardware all day long but in the end the games are just going to be too different. It would be like comparing how good a ferrari is at racing vs a John Deer at tractor pull.
Since the DS Light ain't out yet in europe I had it flown in. This made the price just 50 euros below the price of a PSP (The price of PSP with a 1gig memory stick that in retail value is worth the 50 buck difference). So lets do a side by side of the two systems. I own both of them for a while now and both are good. Yes I did get that nice plague from the society for consumer slaves, don't be jealous.
Size
The DS Light is the smaller of the two. So win to DS? No not exactly. First of it is the light that is smaller. I never compared the regular DS but if the Light is the smaller version then the regular must be pretty close in size to the PSP. Second is that the DS Light doesn't have enough body to fully accept GBA games. So they stick out. UGLY! The DS Light is a delight for playing my GBA games (the screen is just so much better then previous gameboys) but it makes the unit far less handy.
So only the light version is smaller and only if no GBA game is inserted. I call this a tie. Yes I know everyone thinks the DS is smaller but not if you put the two next to each other. The DS light is about the size of the PSP if would cut it off one of the controller sides at the line of the screen. About 2-3 centimeters.
HOWEVER. Pure centimeters ain't everything. The DS Light is just 3 centimeters shorter but that makes it just a lot more easy to carry. Especially for people who can't get away with wearing work pants.
Winner DS Light (DS and PSP tie).
Weight
Easy. The PSP weighs a ton it really makes your jacket hang uneven. DS Light wins.
Form
The simplest difference is that the DS is a clamshell. This makes it look safer to carry around. No I haven't scratched the PSP screen yet (Apple give them a call for what material they used) but it remains scary to carry the PSP unprotected in my pocket. The DS? Who cares, it is just the outer covering, the screens are save.
DS Wins!
Battery life
Frankly I don't know or give a damn, none of them last a long day of gaming. Both have replaceble batteries so if you know you are going on a long trip take extras. The PSP is more easily removed so PSP wins oddly enough. Perhaps I am just old and remember having to carry AA batteries with me for my walkman.
The PSP also deals better with powerloss. It attempts to save the game wich usually means you can resume where left off. It is also easier to adjust power settings (screen brightness) since the DS can't do it in game.
Controls
The PSP has an analog stick. Nice, but either mine is broken or I am to clumsy but it is next to impossible to use. A brilliant game like GTA Vice City is far harder then it needs to be because you can't properly steer. The DS has the famous touchscreen as a controller and it is truly brilliant. It works extremely well. I only get some falses moves in pictochat (suddenly a line that drops straight to the bottom) but never in game.
Game controls DS for the win! Except that there are other controls as well. Screen brightness can't be set unless in DS main menu. The volume is one of those horrible cheap sliders and the power button is far to easily switched in your pocket. Oh and the Sleep function when you close the lid doesn't work for GBA games. Compared to that the PSP has far better controls for controllin the unit itself. The only stupid thing is that the HOLD slider doubles as the power off. You can easily push to far and p
Very accurately. Ask them. "When are we going to face the disaster of the total collapse of the american legal system and democracy?"
Answer: "Anytime we want to."
Perhaps democracy is really flawed at the core. IF it is supposed to work then this is the goverment the people want and therefore they don't want all that nonsense of innocent until proven guilty and due process. OR if democracy don't work then it is all just a costly sham to cover up you are living in a dictatorship.
Anyone know exactly how do you start a revolution. Perhaps I should make some calls. Oh wait a minute, someone is at the doo..[CONNECTION DROPPED]
But did other countries also have shows on the radio that aired computer programs? All you had to do is record it on tape for the C64 (if I remember right) and you had yourselve some new programs to mess with. (This was in holland and on public radio)
Offcourse it sucked for everyone else because of the horrible noise:P

Hydrogen is a transport medium for energy. You produce energy at location A, convert it into hydrogen and then use it at location B.
Why?
Well first, the resource may be impractical to transport to B. Simple example, coal gassing plant generates hydrogen for cars. This would be far far far cleaner then running cars on coal, less hassle and you can do the coal burning on a huge scale with highly tuned filtration. Oh and you won't be burning the coals in busy city centers.
Then there are natural resources. Hydrogen can be easily used as a battery. Just hook an installation up to some remote windmill farm or hydro dam or whatever and collect your tanker full of energy when it is full. Kinda hard to do that with other tech.
This would work great with countries like greenland that have an abundance of clean energy but wich you can't easily put on the grid of other nations.
So the basic answer that has been given time and time again and that every person with a brain by now understands. You can use more efficient and alternative sources of energy production by transforming energy into hydrogen and then using the hydrogen.
It is not just that you apparently haven't yet caught onto this, that can be excused, stupid people have a right to live too. What is really bad is that with your lack of intelligence you still dare to question people who are smarter then you (everyone else in case you are wondering).
When they learned that insects wich fly over tarmac can reach speeds of up to 120km/h but tend to do a lot of travelling between cities 5 days a week and take a trip to the beach on weekends. This leads them conclude that tarmac helps dragonflys achieve great speed. As further evidenced by insects flying near the great stretches of tarmac around airports can fly up to and over the speed of sound.
Science. Love it.
Still, 1/3 of a gram transmitter. That 100 gram cellphone ain't all that hot now is it.
It was the fat sailor and he wasn't listed as having any skills.
It was very blatant because I had him pinned down but was unable to get enough units in fast enough to wipe him completly out in a turn. It then becomes very apparent when he produces way more units then he has cash for turn after turn.
Even if you ad all the costs reductions in the game you don't reach over 50% reduction (he had to pay for repairs as well). I see no way to generate 1 tank 1 artillery 1 something else + repair from 8000. Perhaps it was a bug as I never noticed it obviously cheating before but usually I end the game differently so perhaps I just don't notice.
I mean WTF happened then in the years in between that explains the Star Wars movies. I recently watched a fan movie that showed the court case of Han Solo in wich it was alledged that Lucas wife left him and that she had helped him a lot.
The study starts wonky. Men are show pictures of adults and babies and asked wich they prefer. Mmmm, okay. In what context? Could be they had a bunch of extreme pedo's on their hand.
Rather then testing wich photograph someone likes better perhaps a better test to see if a male is truly intrested in being a father is to see if he is one? Baby pictures are cute. Crying shitting sex-ruining babies are not.
As for what women find more attractive. Well wasn't there another study not so long ago that claimed that it depended on the point in their cycle? So what point in their cycle where these women on?
Personally I think the result of 60% is to close to 50% wich you could easily reach by flipping a coin. Throw in a few extreme photos of men and you got a winner. Michael Jackson vs Bob Sapp (girly man vs the guy that is gonna be your bunk mate in federal jail).
Not so hard to judge the hormone levels there eh?
Did the study look at how these women that guessed right actually did in there personal lives? Any single mothers or battered women? Oh they were students. Any of them been date raped?
Frankly this study seems totally worthless. Offcourse you can tell hormones from facial features. Duh, everyone knows that it is hormones that decide your body build. Just swallow the opposites sex hormones for a while to find out.
And testing men for the desire to be a father by showing them cute baby pictures is just stupid. Ask them "It has been 8 months since you last had sex, 2 months since you last had a full nights sleep, the baby is crying and your wive asks you to get out while she has been at home all day doing shit all and you been working hard to pay for that bloody nurse that costs a fortune and need to go to work again in 2 hours. Do you love your baby now (that probably ain't yours anyway because women like guys with manly faces not saps like you) sucker?".
That would be a proper test. If women were capable of doing such a test we wouldn't have so many single mothers living of benefits. Social security is a good thing and I am willing to pay for it but only if I am allowed to think people who need it are a bunch of fuckwads.
They can't stop illegal drugs, people, weapons, animals (and their remains) from being smuggled but "Hey, those DVD's you burned are our first priority!".
Geez. The war on drugs has gone so well that the price of drugs is at an alltime low (for you capatalist that would either mean no demand (yeah right) or that supply is plenty). Trafficing in human beings is making sure that slavery is with us more then 100 years after it was outlawed. Gun trafficing needs no explenation and some sources suggest that trafficing in illegal animals is just as good a business as drugs.
But lets start checking for copied dvd's. It only fails on just few tiny details only a bastard would point out.
Commercial piracy doesn't bother with burners. They press them just like the real thing. In fact often even in the same factories because machine operators don't earn shit and letting the machine run an extra 10.000 copies is a nice way to save up for your kids education.
Casual pirates download their stuff. Sending it via snailmail would make absolutly no sense.
There are plenty of other uses for recordable discs like backups, demos and such. Yes it is odd that casual downloaders can afford to download a full DVD yet companies still insist on sending demos via snailmail but thats the way it is.
This detects only the discs. Not the contents. Reading them would be similar to reading peoples mail. Surely even post 9/11 that is still not allowed on such a scale?
Nah this is a stupid idea. With drugs dogs you at least know that if they smell any drugs that you got a very high chance it is illegal but here they just smell the container. To actually check them to see if the disc contains illegal information is like opening a letter and read the contents. Lots of loss of privacy.
So any real copyright infringement will be unaffected, it is just another way for people to snoop on you. Do you really want some RIAA goon to check your kids birthday that you send to your parents?
Am I wrong in thinking that given the last three Star Wars movies that it was Steven Spielberg who made Indiana Jones into what it is? I am willing to grant that George Lucas might have helped make it possible as a producer but that Spielberg did all the directing.
Second is that they talk about so many types of weapons. Indiana Jones is an archelogist. A universty professor. Please tell me they ain't gonna do another Tomb Raider with lots of bad shooter action because guns are "cool".
Be honest, who of you thought that the increased amounts of pointless shooter bits were the most boring in the Tomb Raider games?
But who am I kidding. Indiana Jones has been platformer, a Tomb Raider clone and an adventure. The adventure is the one I loved the most. A lucasarts adventure "Indiana Jones and the fate of Atlantis".
So offcourse it ain't gonna be anything like that. They might slap the label adventure on it but only if it is certain to drive another nail into the genre's coffin.
How many people bother to protect their house UNTIL they been burgled? How much inconvenience are we willing to accept to avoid being mugged. (Camera surveillance, random searches, etc)
In the real world a society has only got to deal with a limited set of criminals. The criminals in that society. Not that many nigerian cat burglars who hop over to europe for a quick breakin (I am not going to touch immigration problems today thank you, it is to hot for a flamewar).
But on the net the society is 6 billion and anyone of them can try to see if you left your window unlocked.
Yes it is sad that in the real world you have to put your bike behind a locked fence and the bike itself locked and chained or be told of by the police for leaving your bike to be stolen in your own garden but that is the way it is.
Either we are willing to pay for massive more police, more restrictive laws and larger jails (and some might say freedom again a subject I am not going to touch today) or we have to live with crime.
We could easily secure our computers and the information they contain but to do so would require a lot more work on our part, remove some easy access as well as require measures against people who leave things open.
Did you know that in the real world the police spends time informing people about house safety? That there are even laws against making theft to easy? That is the reason why all shoes on display outside are either left or right ONLY (I never remember wich). Cause a shopowner that has both outside and gets them stolen will receive very little sympathy from the police.
Yet we keep runnings windows, install every flashing free program we find and open emails that promise us naked pictures.
When the user wants to do insecure stuff there is little you can do to stop them.
I was in a beta for a FPS from novalogic. It was fun until the kiddies got in but even at the best of times you had wonder if you were playing bots or real humans.
The game had vehicles including the very desirable choppers.
I like being an evil sniper. No I don't camp because that gets you killed (well only if there is a enemy player with an IQ above room temperature) so I move between shots. Or if the enemy is from america, between clips.
What happened?
Well spawns and runs to the airport to obviously catch a chopper. I don't bother to shoot at him running. I know my enemy and what I know is where he is going to be for a few seconds with his head held still. That is right. When he is in the chopper starting her up. Bam. Headshot.
Check my bearings but no enemy seems to be near. Probably to long a walk and you can't see me from a chopper.
Ooh an other victim just appeared. Yes he does get in the chopper, since obviously the sniper the shot the dead guy in the pilot seat has now gone away. Bam. Headshot.
Another arrives. Again shot on the pilot seat. It is now getting insane, the game has to drop the body out of the seat before a player can enter and that combined with the sometimes dodgy detection of you wanting to enter a vehicle means that now three people are trying to get in the chopper littered with corpses.
Bam, Bam, Bam.
This kept up untill I ran out of ammo.
I killed some people multiple times doing the exact same thing. Is this intelligence?
Not I was not spawn camping. The spawn area was out of my line of fire. I was simply denying an area wich is the role of a sniper.
Anyone of them could have gone on foot to root me out. None did.
Even in other games it was usually a handfull of players who did the sniping/counter sniping and the rest was just fodder.
The above is the choke point you describe but at least the AI has the excuse that it is a physical chokepoint. Nothing forced these players to take that chopper. There were boats and off course infantry can always just walk.
I regurly scored top rank and only got myself killed when I hopped aboard a chopper for a lift only to get my own team to kill me by doing something insane. Like flying a chopper straight in at a enemy base. Kamikazes had nothing on these guys for sheer desire to commit suicide.
SO if that is the state of human intelligence I take AI anyday. At least they can't vote.

Enjoy your false believe in the fact that owning a pistol keeps you free. An unarmed man shot down by the state is a freedom fighter. A man with a gun shot down by the state is a terrorist.
Easy. The PSP weighs a ton it really makes your jacket hang uneven. DS Light wins.
DS Wins!
Offcourse it sucked for everyone else because of the horrible noise :P
Oh and mods, Bite me.
Science. Love it.
Still, 1/3 of a gram transmitter. That 100 gram cellphone ain't all that hot now is it.
At least they can't vote.
if(player.settings.geek == true) echo "no"; else echo "yeah right who are you trying to kid";
