On windows you would use acdsee to browse your porn. On linux? Pornview, I kid you not.
On the other hand nothing beats OS-X for porn. The capability to have audio volume per program rather then a global volume level makes it very easy to set the porn volume low and the mp3 volume high to hide your activity.
When you see someone buy an Mac Mini you know what they are going to be using it for. The perverts.
I can only conclude that people at PC World ain't got a clue about PC's. Since when can.avi.mp3 etc etc contain virusses or malware?
If it only deleted.exe.bat.com etc etc then I could understand the logic BUT deleting media files does not protect anyone.
They almost touch on the simplest explenation. Vigilante. Believe it or not but there are some individuals who feel they have a need to stop others from downloading via p2p.
They would be intrested in deleting any media files you downloaded via p2p. They would not be protecting you but making your (in their eyes illegal) activity worthless. So that explains why they delete harmless files.
It also explains why they try to disable security programs, yet another punishment. That way you are far more at risk from using P2P by being infected. The logic being that pirates do not deserve to be safe.
Vigilante seeking to punish p2p users. Not the RIAA and not some guardian angel. The RIAA would have to have some extremly bad lawyers to have allowed this and a guardian angel would only destroy files wich put you at risk and not disable security software.
Vigilantes have done stuff like this before. It falls in the same field as those "jezus loves you" posts in porn usenet groups. Or so I been told. Not that I would know anything about that offcourse.
And that is indeed very similar (says the owner of an early zen and the latest iPod).
Granted it also happens to be very similar to how I arrange music on my PC but that is something I hope you will keep between us or I might get sued.
In away though the zen and the ipod are very similar. Although the zen uses a scrollwheel and the ipod that touch thingy the end result is the same. You scroll through lists and then select items with a button press.
There probably ain't to many different ways to present the files on the device then in this way. But hey, this patent business. Common sense needs not apply.
Nintendo invented a long smooth stick that vibrates. I thought this company was about kids?
Exactly how long do you think it will be until we find pictures off women inventing whole new games with it?
Men may be perverts but at least we don't use gaming hardware in ways it was never intended. Then again have looking at the PS3 controller... what exactly are those rounded pointy bits supposed to be for?
I see it a lot nowadays mostly as an indicator someone doesn't agree with something. That doesn't mean it is FUD. Anymore then someone having a different opinion is a troll or someone having an argument is flaming.
Nintendo consistently builds better products? WHAAAAHAAA. Yeah right. That is why Sony took them for a ride with the PS1. Sorry but no. Nintendo screwed up badly in the past and had to pay the price. But then you mention apple. So I get my own word that lost all meaning to rebutt your fud.
Some western rpg's allow you to do some really nasty things. Apparently. I think, sometimes you read about them in forums. Apparently in Neverwinter nights you can at one point sell a baby.
Never got the option myself.
Did the game force your kid to shoot his own mates to get their ammo? No? Then what made him do it? Possibly the way he was educated?
I am sick and tired off people blaming their behaviour on games/movies/music/books/cave paintings. If you are an asshole that is because you are an asshole probably raised by assholes.
I often go out of my way to keep the NPC's save just as an extra challenge and because it is so fucking rare to not be the only person around. Apart from the enemies but they don't count since they never stick around for long. Your son aparently doesn't see them as company but as disposable ammo carriers.
Tip, lock your wallet in a safe and make sure he doesn't know the combination or he might just decide to increase his allowance on his own. Yes, over your dead body. After all, those FPS taught him how to shoot and all didn't they?
You got a proper alternator and a shoddy one. Right. Okay. How about this test. LOOK AT THE BOX!
If one comes with the logo of your car brand and the other comes in a plastic bag with chinese instructions. Easy choice.
I only know a bit about mopeds (50cc limited bikes) because there as a huge industry for cheap parts but they really sucked donkey balls. Very poor quality and it showed.
Easily.
Perhaps alternators are different but I can tell the difference between a shoddy muffler and a good one in a second. Mostly because the good one does not have pieces falling off.
But it is made even easier. If cars were the internet it would be very easy to spot the fake spare parts from the real ones because the real ones DO NOT EXIST!
That is how you tell a fake request for your account details email for a real request for your account details. Because the real ones DO NOT EXIST!
This is a not about cheap alternators. This is not even about people buying 10 dollar rolexes from a guy on a street corner. This is about people paying 1000 dollars for the Mona Lisa.
EVERY serious site has a disclaimer stating they will NOT ask you for your details by email. EVERY scam involves them sending an email asking for your details.
WTF?
As for regular spam, how hard would it be to spot a car part if it said r3n@ul1 instead of renault. If you would fall for the badly spelled one do you mind if I kick you? In the nuts so you cannot spread those defective genes?
Scams and spams work because people don't stop and think for a second. It is not asking people to spot gold plated from solid gold. Or even glass from diamonds. It is asking people for a second to think if this deal makes sense.
You can't cheat a honest man and you can't phis a person who thinks.
Play any video that comes your way. Okay, lets put to the test, linux and mplayer vs Windows Media Player.
The first divx or xvid or theora or mkv or ogg file that comes along and windows bites the dust.
Thank you for playing.
Oh you downloaded and installed all the needed codecs on windows. How old fashioned. On linux you just do emerge or apt-get and that is it. All codecs in one. No spyware problems either wich apperently exist with a lot of windows codec packs.
On forums where vids are posted it is a constant topic where I am asked wich codec a vid uses since they can't play it and I am forced to reply that I don't know. I use linux, it just works.
Video playback is the one area linux beats windows handsdown.
First off, where is the config file? Is it in the program directory? Is it in the registry? Is it somewhere in your "documents and settings" dir?
Good luck you found it. If your in luck it is an.ini What do you open that with anyway? Why ain't it associated? Why isn't the.cfg?
Oops it is in the registry. What do those extremely long random strings mean? Why do I need to write stuff down in hex?
BRING OUT THE CAR ANOLOGIE
We have had cars now for well over a hundred years. All that time there has been a need to unlock the hood and a need to lean over a often still hot filty engine to do extremely basic maintenance.
WHY isn't the fill point for water, window washing liqued, perhaps even oil in a more accesible place?
Because people have learned to deal with it and so nobody in his right mind complains about it. But think about it for a sec. WHy do you have to come that close to the engine of your car to tip up the window washing liqued? After all the access point for the fuel isn't under the boot hatch is it?
But at least under linux there is some logic. Desktop program got two config files. A generic one that is just for everyone in/etc/ and a specific one for you in your homedir. How to find it? Well find the name of your program and 99% of the time the config file will named after it.
It really ain't that hard provided you are just willing to experiment.
Just like real life. I sometimes build stands for exhibitions. There is always time to check out the rest of the stands. Then you have two kinds of people. Those who wonder what something is/does and those who ask/push the button. Yes I have had an entire stand flash up and sirens go off at me but at least I knew that those displays of sirens and lights really worked. Nobody minded because the security guard had been wondering what it looked like himself.
Same with computers. JUST TRY!
Windows is for people that wonder how deep sea divers take a leak. Linux is for the kids who ask and learn they were diapers.
Mac OS-X? Probably for the people that fancy sailors.
Replicators are good sci-fi and bad writers hate them. They ruin storylines. Check how many Star Trek stories have the crew facing limited supplies. How can that be? Replicate some more.
Same is true with greed story lines. No federation level race can have any desire to gain precious jewels because they can be easily replicated in any amount you want. So none of this gold pressed latinum nonsense.
The true concept of the replicator was rarely if ever used. In its full glory it would create a world without needs or wants. There would be no scarcity. Not of essentials and not of desirables. You could feed anyone and feed them on the finest foods.
99% of writers could never accept this. They had to introduce limitations or else their story telling techniques could not work. What is the point of sharing a rare bottle with someone. Rare? Just upload its pattern and anyone who wants to can have it.
So they introduced limits, like that it never tastes as good. HOW? Since replicators and transporters are similar technology either they create a perfect copy (and we been told time and time again that transporters do exactly that) or they do not and transporters would be useless.
In Star Trek the true replicators would ruin a lot of the stories because there would be no limit on resources, there would be no value to rare metals and precious stones, there would be no scarcity. Now check how many ST story lines respect the original vision of the replicator.
That is your clue as to the effect it would have on real life. All the current systems would collapse.
Good question, very good question and one that needs to be answered. But not by the police on the street. They need to find stolen cars and arrest the thieves. But ask this question from the parties wanting your vote and test them about what they are going to do about it (stay away from the ones that say things like "deport" unless sooner or later you wanna be deported for not being the right "XXXXX")
I agree with you about half way through your story but then you go into a fantasy land of how the world should be. The police has to deal with the world as it is.
It is not the job of the police to create a better social and economic system for all. That is up to goverment and the people who vote them into power. The police is faced with cleaning up the mess.
It is probably not nice to be black and have everyone assume your a criminal. BUT what can the police do. Ignore crimes because they would have to arrest a black person for it?
Racism is bad but the reverse can be just as bad when you can no longer say the truth. Look at this story, everyone is fighting over how the police is arresting 49% black people with this system and how it must be racist. NOBODY dares to say "fuck we got a HUGE problem here and we need to fix the problems in black communities to get them out of crime".
Ignore it, pretend it ain't there. It is safe and nobody can call you a racist.
But the problem won't go away. We got a disease in our society and until we dare to name the symptoms we will never find a cure. How would you get programs started to get rid of social injustice if your unwilling to admit those injustices are affecting the rest of society. Claim that blacks are not criminals and you don't have to spend any money or time in adressing the social injustices that turn them into criminals. Handy eh. Not a racist and saving money.
There is a HUGE difference between second class, first class and private rooms. I am not talking your normal commuter train here but international trains.
They got "regular" seats for cheap tickets where you spend the entire journey in a seat maybe a bit larger then the one in a normal train. And then you got your cabin train. Watch a movie like Orient Express or Silver Streak to get the idea.
If they got private rooms in airliners today I am flying the wrong airlines.
Ain't it the classified section of your local newspaper. You know that bit where anyone can put up an ad?
Been around for how long? Ever since someone invented the newspaper and realised that a load of penny ads still pays for all the costs just as good as full page ads with the advantage you can stick those tiny classified ads anywhere you got a spare space.
Right above the parent is a post asking for exactly this feature. Now what is a developer supposed to do eh?
As for there being no reason not to give both options, well there is plenty of reason. The two most significant, it ads complexity to the project to support yet another feature and it asks the user yet more question about how to configure the browser.
Personally? I like it the way opera does it. On the tab. More logical.
They never can seem to give a single example about privacy invasion that doesn't involve the person who has his privacy invaded doing something that ain't nice/proper/legal/right.
Really, each and every example you give is just off assholes being found out. Should I care about that?
Geez. Give a decent example. "Yes we saw you give free medical aid to people without insurance doctor, we terminate you as a registered doctor with our insurance company". Bit more contrived but at least the person "caught" is sympathetic.
That is the entire point. Is it your business that you are in the pub during working hours? You boss might feel that it is his business too.
Is it your business that you are mugging this person? The person might feel that he wants everyone to know about it especially the people in blue with dogs that will tear your arm off.
Is it your business you are putting your tag on this shopfront? The shop owner may feel that it is his business as well.
Is it your business you are walking down the street on your own time doing nothing to harm nobody. Yeah sure. Pity that all those other assholes ruin it for you.
The simplest problem is graffiti. A tiny handfull feels the need to spread it all around, a small group doesn't give a damn but the largest group doesn't want it.
Democracy is the dictatorship of the masses. Put camera's up they say to catch the taggers. Yeah pity you are filmed snogging harmlessly with your girl. The good suffer under the bad.
But what is your solution? You are going to pay to have my wall cleaned every week? No didn't think so. You are going to walk the streets at night to keep a personal eye out. No didn't think so.
I hear everyone talking about privacy but no-one offering to pay for the costs of it. Odd that.
We all know how crime was handled in the old south. Arrest the nearest black person. Worked especially well in rape cases cause everyone knows those niggers just can't keep their hands of white women right?
To combat this you have to have a legal system wich is "blind". It is the reason that justice statue has a blindfold.
The problem is that every police person can tell you it is a load of bullshit. If you see a group of black people in a poor area of london in an expensive car you know it is stolen.
Note here that the figure is that 50% of ARRESTS involve blacks. NOT stoppages. The only way people are arrested after being stopped is if they have been found to do something illegal.
What the story is effectivly saying is that the police shouldn't arrest so many black people. But how? Let them run because "oh yeah he done it but we are over our quota off blacks for this week". Arrest white people on made up charges?
Cause the horrible fact is that blacks just seem to commit more crimes or at least be caught more easily. But you can't say that.
This system is impartial. It just looks at the facts and flags a vehicle as suspicious or not.
In fact at its simplest it checks wether a vehicle has been stolen and then tells the police to pull it over.
if then it is found that in 50% of the cases the driver is black what the hell can you do about it.
In holland we got a similar case. Suriname (former colony with a largly black population) is a known traffic route for drugs smugglers. So customs check passengers on flights from Suriname more thoroughly then from other countries. Is this racist? Well yes and no. Obviously the majority of passengers from Suriname are black. Why aren't say asian passengers from Japan searched as well?
Because it ain't about racism. IF that was the case black passengers from japan would be searched extra as well. They are not.
The problem is that political correctness has made it impossible to accept any figures that suggest minorities are more involved with crime. This is just one extreme example.
What do you mean with something stupid. Stumble over a loose paving stone? Drop your icecream? Walk with your fly open?
In that case who the fuck cares, yeah you look stupid and some extra person watching tv saw it as well. So what.
If by something stupid you mean, knock in a window, spray graffity, rob someone then guess what. I don't give a damn if your scarred for life by being caught.
There is a lot to talk about on this subject but people being caught on camera during a blooper moment ain't one of them. Do you want to ban people taking photograps on the street because they might catch you picking your nose?
Just put up a sign. "Please make your phone calls outside."
Same place to deal with crying babies and anyone who snores.
Or maybe airlines should just offer special areas in the plane for people that do not want to be disturbed. Would you pay 3times the ticket price for a private area free from the rest of humanity? It works on boats and trains. Cheap tickets you sit with everyone else, expensive tickets you got your own space.
But yeah it is an intresting social experiment, how much are people willing to annoy a group for their own needs and how willing is the group to put up with the needs of an individual.
It is nothing specific to cellphones. If you honk your car in the middle of the night to say goodbye you are just as much being an asshole.
What I think is new is that it is more anonymous. A family that constantly has guests departing in the night and making noise will have to deal with the neighbours during the day. You are going to have to live in that neighbourhood for years to come so you better behave.
This is far less the case with a cellphone. You will never see those people in the airplane again so who gives a fuck if they hate your guts.
It is a reason some companies have put up a sticker on their vehicles to provide a phone number to call if the driver behaves badly. Without it the driver couldn't give a damn since he will never face the person he cut off in traffic. With the sticker he stand a real chance of being told of by his cheff. I seen several co-workers being reprimanded for people complaining about their driving in company vehicles.
It would perhaps be intresting to see if the people that make annoying calls are themselves annoyed by other people.
European politicians have always been all to willing to roll over for the US. Just check the various extradiction threaties. The problem is both with the left and right. The right wingers think that the right wing america is on their side (HA!) and the left wingers think that america deep down is a decent country (HA!)
Result, the US can steamroll across the EU most of the time unless there is some serious money to be made (you don't think for a second that france or germany protested against the invasion of Iraq for ethical reasons do you?)
No, whatever you can say about the US at least they keep their spying internal. The EU allows anyone to spy on its citizens.
When it comes to having dipshit leaders we still rule the world in europe. You think outsourcing is bad? Try outsourcing jobs to countries and then getting the unemployed from those countries into your own. Brilliant! Export jobs and import unemployed people. Only in the EU.
There are some right loonies on slashdot and they always come out of the woodwork during discussions like this.
The simple fact is that the issue of taking DNA samples from criminals has been discussed ages ago. It is very old news indeed.
It really does help police to investigate crime just as fingerprints do. Especially crimes like rape wich any normal person would consider worthy of prosecuting.
Offcourse over the years more and more people have had to give up their DNA. The reason is simple. ANY police officer can tell you that where there is smoke there is fire. If a person commits one type of crime they are very likely to also have done other things. You would be suprised how many "heave" criminals are arrested because they were stopped speeding. Not that every speeder is a criminal and not that every criminal speeds but often enough for it to make sense to check a criminal convicted of say drug abuse for being involved in other offences.
Like it or not, the "public" has voted in favor of it every single time.
This case is not about the collecting of DNA but about the donation of blood. He objects on religious reasons.
Offcourse slashdot spin turns it into something else but the simple fact is that criminals have no rights. It is one of the rules of prison. You do it their way. No or about it.
I am sure this has come up before. Nothing like jailtime to bring the religious nutter out in people. Guess what, the rule about donating blood still stands. BEcause in the US criminals ain't got rights.
The public wants it that way.
Don't like it. Run for goverment. Make it your agenda to give more rights to conviceted criminals. Good luck.
Then fossil fuels are solar power too. After all they come from the remains of plant eaters (or plant-eaters-eaters) and plants themselves wich grow from sunlight.
On the other hand nothing beats OS-X for porn. The capability to have audio volume per program rather then a global volume level makes it very easy to set the porn volume low and the mp3 volume high to hide your activity.

Good luck.
Next time you tank remember, it is all natural.
A good conman would make the victims feel bad if he was arrested.
