You just don't get it, what made the Arduino so popular is that you could do things with it straight out of the box, without first having to solder on pins like the cheapest Teensy. Just put in a led, write some simple code and the Arduino ran. That is what sold it. The arduino is something a kid could take to work for show and tell and that I find an amazing idea in this day and age when most kids are raised with black boxes.
All the experts and people that knew what they were doing could already buy all the electronics they wanted and put it together, the Arduino filled no gap for them, it was for all the people who aren't experts that this kit exists. For all those who want to try their hand at it but don't have the patience and/or knowledge to start messing about with setting up something completely from spare parts. The Arduino is a kit just a tiny bit under the electronic kits sold in toy stores. The teensy would be sold in a hobby store. Different level. Some devices help people cross over. That is why Lego is so immensly powerful, sure, you can make far better stuff with raw material and a toolset but it helps people get started.
And it doesn't help anyone get started if all the "experts" sneer at the choice of starter tools. It is the reason makers areas succeed or fail by the attitude of their founders. Some can be really hostile to any newby who comes in all excited but makes the mistake of having only a 9 bucks soldering iron. Oh NO! SHUN HIM!
Meanwhile the maker area's that welcome people are exploding and running out room.
The Arduino was never about price or performance. If you really want a led display, you can get fastly more powerfull and usuable device by simply buying a dedicated device. Same for a remote control robot, even programmable ones.
But with an Arduino even those NOT blessed with a background in electronics could make it work. There are even interfaces for it where you program it completely through a icon interface like this http://www.electronics-lab.com/blog/?p=5865
Yes, there are more powerful devices out there, there are cheapers devices there are even more powerful AND cheaper devices out there. And they ALL didn't succeed to even come close to the support Arduino had. Even if you have no programming experience and never messed around with a battery and a led, the Arduino community is able and willing to give you a hand.
It is the difference between Ubuntu and Debian, between Linux and BSD, between PHP and Python. Sure, the "experts" look down on it, but the first are the stuff that gets used by noobs who might or might not become experts (if they even have a desire too) while the second are the stuff people TELL you you must use before they even consider talking to you.
I know some people who never coded anything yet messed around with Arduino after buying a kit and did some silly little projects that won't amaze anyone bit it was fun for them, not unlike the electronic kits you could buy when I was a kid. Sure sure, if you all did it from scratch with a soldering iron, you no doubt ended up a much better kind of human being but us mere dregs had to make due with simpler tools. And get things done.
When it comes time for you to move on, as you outgrow the Arduino, you can go for the more specialist tools and hopefully overcome the lack of manuals and guides. But some people need the training wheels and sneering at them is only get you complete and utter contempt from all the non-pricks in this world.
Like I have utter contempt for a person who lists as an alternative a board that isn't available at the stated price anymore and another board that has a shipping time of anywhere from a week to a month depending on what the supplier feels like and neither has anywhere near the 3rd party support.
Let me know when I can give away an arduino kit and have someone make something immediatly even if it is as trivial as a led lighting up to a light sensor but THEY did it, themselves and get that makers spirit burning in another product that is both as forgiving AND as flexible, THEN you can come back.
No doubt people like taktoa scoff at childrens books too because for less you can buy great literature, in latin!
For those of us who are old, or read a book once, it is also true that science has been abused and suffers from bullies where going against the norm is seriously discouraged. It ain't just the church that cries heretic.
Once upon a time, there was no proof smoking was dangerous with PLENTY of scientists willing to proof it wasn't dangerous either and the scientists that did show proof it was dangerous? Quacks, nay-sayers, etc etc.
Real science has no absolutes, things are thought to be X until further research either gives more evidence that X is the case or that it has to be rethought and Y is the case.
There have been to many cases where a wonder material/drug/tech was thought to be oh so safe by men in white coats and now we know that just hearing the name can kill you and your kitten! DDT, Asbestos, diesel (once it was thought diesels were better for the environment) fine dust, 1 glass of alcohol a day.
Is holding a microwave to your head dangerous? I am pretty sure if you taped a cellphone to a mouse and had it ring all day, you would have a very cross mouse. But is it dangerous to a human? We can eat some poisons very happily as long as the doses isn't lethal because we flush it out but things like lead aren't all that dangerous immediately but stay inside so what is the "truth"? Can I safely eat "drop dead where you stand" puffer fish every day if the dosage is tiny but if I eat it with a leaden spoon I will die of lead poisoning (the yakuza plugging me for non-payment of a rather hefty restaurant bill).
People who claim we receive radiation of some sort all the time aren't showing great scientific understanding. We breath oxygen all the time too but if I upped your dosage for just 1 minute by say 50 percent, you would still not like it very much.
And with all that background radiation, we still die. Do we die BEFORE regular background radiation has a chance to have a noticeable effect? Could it be that X works to slow to kill us before we croak but X+Y works faster?
I just remember and have read about to many cases were everyone thought something was safe and then it wasn't. Including such gems as seatbelts being unsafe because they kill you if you hit water. I can see how that might worry the Dutch but how does that affect people who live in desserts or even deserts? But the scientific results are published as facts.
Fact: The band of radiation used by cell phones in high constant dosage is dangerous to small animals.
The above statement has been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt by people trying to dry dogs in microwaves.
Of course, you cellphone isn't a microwave, isn't on all the time and has a fraction of the power. So, some scientist, usually being payed by an insititution who favors continued unrestricted use off cell phones, claim it is harmless (a dangerous word that doesn't mean that something is not having an effect, just that its effect shouldn't cause you to worry) while those working for people who want cellphones banned claim otherwise.
Gosh, some scientist claimed smoking was harmless (again that word, they didn't deny that if you injected the ingredients in large doses you wouldn't die, they just claimed a cigarette wouldn't kill you (while saying nothing about 3 packs a day). A single cigarette indeed won't likely kill you were you stand and who is to proof that the cancer you get 50 years later started from the single molecule of smoke from THAT cigarette?
And those who claimed smoking was lethal were attacked.
So... I don't know. Our society needs radio communication and our life span hasn't dropped since it was introduced. Or has it but advances in medicine have hidden it? Would we be living to a 100 on average if radio had never been discovered? Not likely.
But part of "believing" in science is to keep an open mind. I can't even keep track of how many truths have been discarded in my life time, just the ones on dinosaurs alone would fill a large pamphlet and nobody can keep track of how much alcohol is "ha
You must be fun at the watercooler with your facts and logic and reasonable thinking.
Anyway, the Brits cut costs on their rail network and it resulted in lots of people dying when infrastructure collapsed and years of totally disrupted service around the country. And the US rail system is a joke with also many many deaths thanks to lousy infrastructure.
Corruption is indeed a problem in China but at least they are dealing with it, and not with leisure resort prisons but with death penalties. It ain't perfect but the west is hardly any better. It is one of the reasons health care is such a problem in the west, turns out that the more money you put in, the less the nurses get and the more managers you get with paychecks totally unrelated to the worth of their work. But hey, it ain't in brown envelopes, so everything is alright or so says the party of managers (Tories, VVD, Republicans) and they are trustworthy surely.
Oh wait, no, VVD Senator turns out to be corrupt was in the news yesterday, what a suprise. And this week, top managers of health care insurers in Holland make salaries closing in on the half a million euro's, far more then was agreed upon, not that the right wing government did anything to check of course. Nope it is a total surprise to them...
Hydrogen emits clean water when you use it. This petrol emits all the same harmful crap as regular petrol. Petrol is dense but using it is very inefficient, a car is lucky to use 20% of the energy in a useful form. But it emits 100% of the carbon and other crap regardless.
It is an intresting hybrid solution, if it works but I think you are going to see an energy conversion ratio that would make a SUV user cry and all the same polutants.
I am not an expert on radiation by any means.... but... the head, legs and arms (and the crotch when walking) look awfully exposed to me. Or does white cloth reflect radiation?
Yes, I do know that nurses were aprons made of lead and are not fully encases in a lead lining but they are dealing with a small radiation source coming from a single spot. Anyone going into a reactor would be dealing with radiation coming from everywhere, constantly, for a long time. So the lead shield banging into your balls protects you, from radiation from the front, some of the time... WHOOT! Sign me up!
Oh and any radiation from the top, goes straight through the entire body. This is about as usefull as a bullet-proof vest, against a spear coming out of the ceiling.
If radiation were to come from only a single spot and didn't bounce around, you could simply use a lead sheet mounted on wheels between you and the radiation source and work faster and in greater comfort, since that is not an option apparently (surely someone tried this and discarded it as being the product of a deranged mind), I fail to see how what is essentially an expensive sieve is going to keep you safe.
Use it as a drop-and-forget device to give to those members of your family/friend circle who can't be trusted/don't need a full window install.
I know it is hard to believe but for some people, all they need is something that runs a browser and then a browser on a OS that isn't vulnerable to all the malware and other crap known to invest the Windows.
As for it being always on and peoples complaints the carriers are cutting data plans... there are lots of people who have no need for a laptop everywhere, a laptop is used NOT to carry around but for easy folding away when it isn't used so it doesn't clash with the rest of the room. Small, safe device that can be taken out and put on the kitchen counter for catching up with email, see pictures of the grandkids on facebook, play an online browser game or two and then stores away again. All for a price that won't break the bank and won't require constant support from ungrateful grandkids.
Not every new device is intended for consumption by nerds.
Freenet makes use of the darknet, the bit of the internet that doesn't light up routers when it goes through it....right.
Darknet is a website that isn't on port 80 and google hasn't indexed. in the west, nobody gives a fuck so the kiddies in the west think, YEAH they can't find us! This will work in North-Korea and if you are caught, they can't proof anything because it won't show!!!
In Korea, you don't have a PC. If you do, it is monitored and ANY signal not understood will be cracked by the process of hammer on fingers. There is no darknet.
Some kids have high IQ's but zero sense of reality.
One thing you can use BitCoin for is to buy drugs on Tor. You basically send BitCoins to someone you don't know with your order in an electronic record which includes your address so the drugs can be delivered... its anonymous!
Bitcoing is a good idea only if you are drunk. Lots of ideas are. Pity the rest of the world is sober. And spinning.
You don't go to the Apple stand at your local retailer looking for a bargain, you want the perceived best and the perceived best carries a price but it is worth it. It is how Sony grew big, they were never the best or the cheapest but they had this image that for the price you got a decent piece of hardware and not some japanese crap like say Sharp. Yeah I know it doesn't make sense, people often don't.
Once price starts being used other then for reasoning that "if it costs this much, it must be good" you start competing with Samsung and Archos, the also ran display stand were all the devices are side by side with price the biggest print on the display cards. The devices are ordered by price and you go to the part of the stand that is in your range, then look towards the high end to see what you can't afford but want anyway since more expensive means better.
MS will be there, at the far end, with a logo people so far have shown zero attachement too. Of course, I know over a decade of abysmal Phone and indeed Tablet sales say nothing of the future. Haha, I just couldn't keep a straight face saying that.
The worst indication is that MS ordered only a couple of million of the device, launching just ahead of Christmas, clearly they themselves don't expect to be breaking any records.
All the perceived advantages listed in the rather ridiculous article HAVE BEEN THERE BEFORE. Every generation of MS Phone has had native office support etc etc. there have been full windows (not RT/Arm which won run any of the windows programs you use on your windows desktop) tablets and they DID NOT SELL.
Meanwhile, the Tablet with no windows compatibility at all, outsells everything and the largest PC maker sells PC's without windows. Could it be, horror of horror, that people don't NEED Windows? Nah... inconceivable.
That will work about as well as Microsoft "get the facts" campaign which just was free advertising for Linux and good advertising, because Linux must be really good to have MS so worried about it.
The top dog NEVER does negative advertising on its smaller competitors, at best you just look pathetic and at worst, everyone will check out your competitor to see what got you running scared.
The xbox made right... yeah... that is why half of them have to replaced and the circle of death has brought the blue screen to consoles.
And as for people WANTING MS products... who actually BUYS MS? They buy a Dell, that comes with MS software pre-installed with no choice to remove it. And gosh MS goes out of its way to report the number of installs but not the number of de-activations, every PC pre-installed with windows that got wiped and had linux installed, still is counted as a MS install.
And if MS has such a good image, explain why its phones simply do not sell? Because the moment people have choice, they choose everything BUT MS.
And linux based PC, does the linux based phone and tablet market count? Then last week.
MS tried tablets before, they didn't sell. But hey, people LOVE MS products... they just don't buy them.
Why was he in the emergency room yet capable of deliberately bringing a laptop for the long wait?
Because he was using the ER for something he should have gone to the doctor paid through his insurance rather then the ER which is free if you don't have insurance.
And he wonders why hospitals have no money to spend on IT security.
Genetics duh, with a dad like that, how can his sun become anything but a liberal arts major. Lets hope for the kids sake his mother cheated.
The reason for giving all kids a basic set of education is that you can't say at the age of 6 what a kid is going to be good at or wants to do, so you give a change to do a bit of everything and then they can narrow it down as they grow older, themselves by choosing how to continue their education and/or career.
The kid might indeed choose never ever to use chemistry again. And that will be his choice BE he was given the choice.
The simple way to test if subject A should be dropped is to ask if that means B could also be dropped. Those who heavily favor the soft sciences, well if chemistry should be dropped, then we also drop arts. Right?
You ask, why those at school, presumably in her class didn't have the insight of a fully trained shrink and could diagnose her as having issues and offer support?
Because they are 12 year olds! And her teachers? Over-worked dealing with hundreds of students each with their own problems. A quiet shy girl who isn't noticed, doesn't get noticed. The bullies get the support because they make a lot of noise, the quiet ones who commit suicide of the bullies, they don't appear on the radar.
And the bullies blame their victims for being weak, see countless comments so far on this subject. It is the way of the world.
And you are supporting it because you blame the world and the victim more then the bullies.
An asshole thought he could do anything on the internet without consequence, so did another asshole. There are consequences to your actions, suck it up.
I am not a dreamer, I don't believe it worth letting a million criminals go free to save one innocent man from jail. Because the reality is that countless criminals go free and STILL we end up with innocent people going to jail.
Revenge might not solve anything but it sure feels good and doing nothing doesn't solve anything either and makes you feel lousy.
So, unless you can offer justice, I go for revenge.
You do understand that the whole concept of anonymity is to have no identity? Anonymous isn't a group of individuals because you can't be certain who is or isn't a member because they are all anonymous. The moment they get an individual identity, they are no longer anonymous.
Last weekend, a video was posted threathening dutch ISP and the dutch content mafia with a cyber attack by Anonymous, it turned out to be a kid who had no relation with them but there was no way to know this because you can't call up anon and ask them if anon, no the other anon, not that anon, you know the anon who knowns anon is really an anon. Well you could but the poor sap you end up calling randomly probably will hang up on you.
MS constantly reverses its opinion on Windows Gaming, then it pushes it, then it neglects it, then it forgets it even has it, then it is the next big thing.
Games for Windows is a prime example.
And MS KNOWS damn well that the only reason a lot of us haven't gone to Mac and/or Linux fulltime is gaming. But it has this multiple personality syndrome were it tries to have all its cakes and eat them to and hug them and squeeze them to death and ignore them because ignoring a girl you like is the best way to show you like her.
Saying MS has a policy on gaming is laughable. it has brain farts.
A lot of people seem to think this is a good result because they don't think hacking should be outlawed, or they hate the US or think the US has to harsh a penal system.
The real fact however is that because a person claimed that Asperger would cause him to commit suicide, escaped facing trial a healthy person would have had to face for his actions.
I don't like the idea of 'get out of jail free' cards. I remember a case were a woman killed her husband and claimed temporary insanity because of her period. Fine, so her cycle makes her insane, so let her out of jail for murder. Just lock her up every month to prevent any more murders.
Oh wait, your disability/insanity/illness/bad drug use effect ONLY applies the once, not for the rest of your life? I see.
In Hollland we got something called TBS (Ter Beschikking Stelling/To be made available) it is sentence given to crazies on top of or instead of a prison sentence and it is basically forced mental care. And where prison sensentences have a fixed time (we do got real life sentences in Holland) TBS can last until a doctor says your fit to be returned into society. It is NOT a nicer option then jail no matter what people think.
If you suffer the disability of being blind in one eye, you can't drive a car. Plain and simple. Disability you can't help nonetheless has a permanent consequence to protect yourself and others.
If you are mentally unfit to make financial deals, you are protected by being able to have contracts undone BUT society is also protected from you by the consequence of you being placed under supervision of a caretaker so you can no longer enter into contracts on your own.
Action => consequence.
But this guy did something and now wants not to suffer the consequence. He is saying "people with asperges shouldn't be sent to America". Not people in general, just not him, because he is special. Not so special that his Aspergers should have any consequence for him, like being barred from using a internet connection, not his disability should only give him a get out of jail free card and nothing more.
And that don't sound right.
If nothing else, it is a slap in the face of everyone with far more serious issues who don't go breaking the laws. I just don't like twats getting away with things because they throw a hissy fit and all the cry babies rush over to sooth him.
Simple sentence, community service and supervised internet access until he can prove he won't be acting like an ass again. No doubt this will be protested because people with Aspergers shouldn't be forced to have supervised internet access to ensure they behave. It should just be used to stop them from having to face the consequences of their actions.

If C'thulu was running for president in 2012, he would be the lesser evil.
Have you spend any time reviewing the history of the candidates? Not what they promise but what they have done so far?
Their antics would disgust even a pope.
Happy?

And everyones penis is 10 inches too. Even the girls. Or maybe that is just the bars I visit. Good coffee though.
Right?
No? Then we keep it as it is.
Ah! Home sweet home, I do miss it sometimes but the journey back is a pain in the ass.
Ten to one, you were/are a bully yourself.
An asshole thought he could do anything on the internet without consequence, so did another asshole. There are consequences to your actions, suck it up.
Revenge is the best you can get.
Anyone of any religion could serve under Napoleon and rise through the ranks. Good luck doing that in the British army of those days.
Action => consequence.
