The outcry is not so much that they are cybersquatting. Well some are but that is not why the geeks are rebelling. The problem is that you used to be able to do a lot of usefull stuff by checking if a domain existed or not.

Now thanks to this you can't well not without rewriting your code. grrr.

I can only guess that nobody ever used a .museum url anyway :)

But yes it is exactly the same thing. Except for the scale difference. I guess you can't check against spam being send from a .museum domain either.

Good for finding this and pointing this out.

However later on the stress levels dropped markedly as the animals could rely on each other. Sleep time showed the most drastic drop with heart beat and such going way down.

Perhaps in fit of sanity lucasarts realised that one of the most bitched about parts of the original full throttle was the bike fights. Sure it was original. Sure it was new. Sure it was kinda fun. Until you got hopelessly stuck at that point.

Hybrid games rarely work. Mixing adventures with anything is sure to fail miserably. I am wrong? Prove it. Adventures are slow by nature. Hell in Lucasarts adventures you usually can't even die. To then suddenly add elements from other games, rarely works. Answer me this. Wich did you thought was more fun. The fights in Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis or the ones in the original Monkey Island? Right thought so.

Battle of britain and Secret weapons of the luftwaffe were solid flight sims coming with thick clear manuals that even gave several run downs on the war the games were set in. Good solid manuals that told you everthing thing you need to know and a lot more.

Their adventures based on the excellent scumm engine were topnotch. X-wing was amazing.

Then something happened. I don't know what but I will give you the clues. Maybe you can figure it out.

    • Afterlife. If you never seen it be thankfull.
    • X-wing vs Tie-fighter. I am not 100% sure but around this time a logo started to spring up when you loaded the game. It was amazing bright and cheerfull. It also was glaringly out of place. What is it with all these fucking logos? Why did they outsource the development or something? I buy a lucasarts game. Not just something rebadged.

Missles in later x-wing games. X-wing is a dogfighter. Laser against laser with the odd protontorpedo against heavy targets. Later on in the game however you couldn't start a run on a capital ship without dodging endless missles. What joy.

Minefield in x-wing games. Clear 1 gazillion tiny mines. Whee. Are you having fun yet?

Monkey Island 4 control system. (it may have been grim fandango that did it first don't know) UGH. One of the bad points of click and play adventures has always been pixel hunting. Now you had to pixel hunt by moving an other pixel across the screen with cursor keys. Yikes. Whoever made this one is an enemy greater then Gates and McBride put together.

    • Manuals. Anyone notice manuals and general goodies like keycards have becoming rarer and rarer these days? From the thick binders (handy for putting the manual open on a certain page) to the well the sheets of copy paper you get now. Yet the price of games has gone up, but the media price, floppies vs cd's has come down. Rip off?
    • First episode. Ugh, what did they do to star wars. All the games based upon it have been total dogshit.
    • Consoles. Lucasarts made it big on the PC. It has made good money from a loyal fanbase. So what does it do to reward us and continue the good relations? Develop console only games. Grrr.
    • Crap buggy games like rebellion and what was that RTS called again? Ewh.

So valve is familiar with how to write code for linux and they use it to make money. Bioware didn't but they did support linux, sure it took them time but they did it. Thanks.

So is it really that stupid to expect a company like Valve to give something back for all those linux machines that have helped make their game great?

Remember that the the cost of the engine, the bit that would need porting, is minor nowadays to the cost of creating the world, the art, wich doesn't need to be ported.

So the real problem the poster has is not that valve like the fast majority of game companies ignores linux. They made gratefull use of linux by running their game servers on it. Is it then really that odd to expect that they would this time also allow all those linux users who helped made their game great to be able to play it as well? It is not like the cost of porting is all that big. They know how to write for linux and considering it comes out on x-box they know how to port.

Sure 10 AA batteries is bad. But that is because this company probably did not have to capacity to use a better battery pack. Sony has.

So lets not say that because others did some silly stuff (why use AA batteries at all, how many quality walkmans do use them? Not that many am I right?) doesn't mean Sony has to do it as well. If they are smart they make the console rechargable. You know, like all the HD-based diskmans, PDA's and telephones people use. Swapping AA batteries is something a cheap company like Nintendo does.

So if they make the PSP a quality product, along the lines of the iPod then they can easily put in some quality batteries. If they then give 3 hours of uninterupted play before having to be plugged in again I think that will be more then enough for most users (people who commute) and long car journeys. (powered via cigarette lighter)

Of course for your flight to germany it probably then won't last. Well guess what. The fast majority of people do not make such trips on anything like a regular basis. And of course as I pointed out Sony has been known to make to it possible to attach an external battery pack just for those occasions.

But here is the real question. You do already own a gameboy right? Why you should you then buy a PSP if it is just going to offer the same kind of games?

The claim is that the 3D performance will be closer to the PS2 then the PS1. Zing. Compare this to the GBA who while a nice console is hardly what you would consider a power monster. Have you seen some of the 3D games on the gameboy? The GBA has pathetic power. Doesn't mean it makes for bad games. It doesn't. But it does mean that anyone going to compete with it better offer something different. Like say more powerfull games? You don't compete by doing exactly the same thing (please pay attention KDE developers) you compete by offering something you hope will be considered superior. Now ask youselve this, how many people who usa a gba really need 10 hours playtime between recharges?

So they are putting it with HIGH end performance items like laptops. Sure you mobile phone easily has several times the battery life of youre P4 Radeom mobile laptop. On one you play snake on the other you play Quake3.

You are basically complaining that the McClaren F1 is not as fuel efficient as say a Smart. Duh.

I for one hope that sony goes for power and options. And simply does what they did with my mini-disc player. Make it top-notch with the simple option of affexing an external battery pack for those occasions you need more battery life. (it is a two AA cell plastic container that screws on to the side. and supplements the encased rechargeable battery)

Go sony. Go for the high-end market. It is there. I know plenty of gameboy fans who got every color of the bloody thing. They wouldn't think twice about buying a device 2x 3x the price if it gave them performance. Oh and please. Proper lighting this time right? Oh and screw battery life. Just include larger batteries and give us battery packs that can be easily charged and exchanged.

And while we are at it. Please realise the nature of gameplay on these devices. So no games where the only way to save is writing down a huge string of characters. Save anywhere. It is possible.

Oh well no doubt the product will be ruined by focus groups who will never even buy it because they got the time to be in focus groups while those of us who can and would buy it are at work.
