First of I am not an american. I am dutch. The reason I still care is that because no matter how stupid, idiotic, moronic, braindead and anal americans attempt to be. Give us 10 years and we will improve on it. Calefornia privatised the electricity and now got brownouts? Ha, we did that in 2 yrs time. I have had more brownouts in this year then in the entire rest of my life and I am old.
Okay given that, a big reason for voter apathy is often that people can't see any difference between the candidates. In holland we got about a dozen parties withabout half of them big enough to make a difference. In america it is only 2. However in this election you have a couple of dozen candidates and not even the greatest cynic can claim they are spouting the same old lines.
Also a cause for voter apathy is said to be that the voter can't see what the goverment is doing. Well with all the brownouts and the enron/worldcom trouble I should this could have woken the voter up that they need a good goverment to represent them.
Nonetheless on youre weblog you say that you expect the turnout to be oven lower then when gray davis was elected. If all this can't get the voter intrested then what can? You now got superstars, nutcases, pornstars and (sorry about this) you and yet you expect even fewer people to give a damn. Is democarcy ultimatly always going to go down to a minority voting or is it perhaps time to introduce mandatory voting?
of course, however for accident type identification the first thing that is done is to request medical details of persons believed to be involved in the crash. Something like a heart transplant is hard to miss in a medical history especially since transplant patients have to keep swallowing medicine to keep their body from rejecting the transplant. Also it must be a pretty horrific incident for something like the heart/liver/kidney to become a seperate part that is the only thing wich can be used for identification. In real life accident identification it is often a case of scooping up the bits, determining if all those believed missing are indeed among the bits and no bits left unaccounted for, then to divide the bits into the number of victims and bury them. We got a war cemetery here that just has a number of monuments with skeletons in them, if future researchers ever find them they must think WWII was the first mutant war.
For criminal identification. Almost all transplants are on the inside. Again it must be pretty nasty crime scene for a suspect to leave traces of internal organs. Skin transplants might of course leave false dna, so could a wig for that matter. But skin transplants are meant to be replaced by youre own skin and people are unlikely to commit an offence while recovering from whatever that required them to get an alien skin transplant.
But it doesn't really matter all that much does it? If this is a large enough occurance then you simply must match blood found to blood from the suspect, hairs found to hairs from the suspect. Or am I missing something here?
So, anyone here skilled enough to write a trojan that
automatically installs kazaa
Generates semi randomly a list of music to download.
Sorts the music into directorys sorta like most of us do by default.
Set all file creation times and accesstimes to a random date
Hides itself a bit so you can claim "I didn't know it was there"
Anyone then faced with an RIAA lawsuit can just accidently install it and claim that the virus did it. Am I missing something here? And why isn't there any mention of wich virus did it?
You are presuming that downloading/buying child porn is a victimless crime like say growing weed. Quite how you seem to arrive at this conclusion is a bit of a mysterie to me.
Anyway there recently was a case against an american who run a huge hosting network for the purpose of selling childporn. I forgot the names involved and googling for "child porn" is not that enjoyable. He was sentened to over a 1000 years. What however apperently a lot of people saw was the profits he has made.
There are now a great number of sites hosted and created in russia that make and sell child porn to western customers (since they are the ones who got the money). Childeren are being molested raped and killed to generate these images. This is being done because people are willing to pay for them. Wipe out the customers and the suppliers will go away.
Personally I think a few years in jail for a child porn collector causes a bit less grieve then a child being raped and killed. Apperantly you don't.
Tsk, commie. So yeah you can compile an awfull lot of the tools you find on youre terrorist build linux pc on say something like the red china zaurus. Or maybe one of youre pinko friends is right now porting it to run on its tainted hardware while under the influence of drugs, depriving many many americans from earning a decent living.
On a more serious note, I have worked for O2 the netherlands. In that role I had to develop a site for the XDA a pda/phone developed by MS. Slight problem, I didn't have one available. A few weeks away from launch the bloody thing was nowhere to be found. I had had glimpses at it but building the site was pretty much guessing how it would work with the pda.
The crap thing turned out only to support an ancient version of IE, no CSS for one. This of course was a bit of a bummer. It also crashed repeatdly, well no suprise there, even so terminally it had to be send back to the supplier for repair.
I also had the delight to work with the zaurus for a short while, after the XDA it was like having the difference between being kicked in the nuts and a blowjob.
We have come to expect our pc's to crash. It seems to be just a thing they do. But how often has youre tv crashed after years of working non-stop? Youre cd-player? Youre washing machine? I am currently testing 2003 of windows, it has crashed repeatdly on a intel rig. MS just can't write crash proof software. It is the price we pay for the wide choice of hardware and uses we get on a pc. On my phone, thank you but no thanks.
I recently played C&C Generals. It looked great. It played, well it played like the original C&C. The same idiocy of having to build a production center right near the frontlines. Still being asked to fight a war and a mining operation. Okay so the americans could build a structure wich actually seemed to give you money from the home country. But the units was the same rock-paper-scissors mix. And the AI seem to have all the faults that date back to dune.
In Dune, you had ornicopters wich went in and would fly damaged vehicles back to base for repair. This is the only time I have ever seen intelligent behaviour in a westwood game. It really helped out as you could launch an attack and then depend on the choppers to rescue the most endangerd units. In the C&C followups you can't even count on units in front of an endangered unit to join in the fight. Hell most often the unit underfire will just stand and take it.
Now enter Close Combat. It scaled down the units and grouped them together, but most importantly the units seem to react to things going around them. If you order a unit to cross a field and it came underfire it would seek cover and return fire. Other units you held back to cover them would supply covering fire.
It even went so far that units with nothing to do would advance on their own or seek better positions to fire from. It gave you the idea that you were a commander not a babysitter.
But AI seems to be the most difficult thing to code. We can generate graphics that would have dropped our jaws a few years ago. But has anyone of us seen the same increase in AI? I at least have not.
Sure in vietcong the enemy seems slighly more intelligent then those in say Doom but youre own team mates seem not able to keep up.
Sadly I don't think anybody cares. The sales figures for the more realistic wargames are pityfull next to the C&C and AoE franchises. Apperantly people like sheepherding braindead units.
The GBA SP is not the original GBA. I know some people that seem to collect them and 1 guy even has them in all available colors. I am not like that. I am not going to buy what is essentially the same piece of hardware twice.
I did however buy the afterburner and installed it easily. It made a huge difference. Previously it was next to impossible to use on a train. Now I can and do use it anywhere.
If nintendo designers had a brain then they could have looked at what the most bought third part extra. The external light. Would you buy a phone without a light for the screen? Calling it a design decesion is just a cop out. They goofed and they goofed big time. The sales figures of the GBA SP a two year old hardware platform prove it.
Oh and yes I do use the headphone. I use the sony earbuds, I prefer them since they keep outside noise out and the music in. I think that people whose phones/walkmans/games you can hear in public transport should be shot in the ears with a crossbow.
Oh and I do not own any other consoles.
The link to the addon is a good one, but really proves my point. If third party developers think they can make a selling something to a fraction of youre customers, then perhaps you could make a killing on it.
Lufthansa Systems gehort zu den weltweit fuhrenden IT-Dienstleistern fur die Luftfahrt.
Lufthansa Systems belongs to the worldwide leading IT-serviceproviders for the airlines.
This means that the customers are the airlines not the passengers. I would have thought this was pretty clear from context. But perhaps you do not know how the airline industry works. They typically split up different activities up in companies so you have "Airline AAA catering" "Airline AAA maintenance" "Airline AAA luggage losing". Then it is not unusual for these sub companies to provide services for other airlines. After all if you have 1 line flying into a destination it makes more sense to use the services of a rival then to setup youre own company.
So anyway this is just a normal line said by almost all big IT suppliers. That more and more customers are asking about solutions that include linux as opposed to the other Unixes and Windows.
Right show me any of those with full documentation, all the necessary gear, tutorials and current support for $99 in one package.
Price taken from the FAQ
Oh you can't? Geez, I am suprised.:)
I would have agreed with you perhaps if they weren't upfront, unlike any of the consoles you mention about what hardware is inside. It is clearly mentioned that the cpu is a 16 bit 25 mhz ancient motorola. Anyone with a brain can see this is barely going to compete with the gameboy (the original) it comes with more stuff but seems to lack a screen.
Then again for $99 it is clearly in the same price category as the ORIGINAL gameboy, not the same as a modern console and certainly nowhere near a pc.
Unless I completely misread the article it is like those kits you can buy to make youre own radio. Sure for the same money you can usually buy an already finished ones. That is not the point!
Sure you can do this with existing platforms like the C64 mentioned but you will then have to do an awfull lot of research youreself. Here you get in one package everything you need to learn and thinker with a computer.
Oh and for those wining about the power of the processor, do you perhaps think this could have something to do with A: price B: power C: Documentation D: Cooling? How about all of the above?
This could be a nice learning tool for those not already familiar with how computers work. Now all of it is going to depend on the following things.
Documentation, is it going be clear enough to read by anyone who has an intrest without offending those who already know a bit?
Price this is at least partly a toy, lets hope they choose for ancient tech to keep the price down.
Availabilty, if they can get this in to hobbyshops it could work.
Nice to see someone dare to create a hacker learning tool. Pity most/. have their head so far up their ass they can't see the fun of a product like this.
Not just storage, it is perfectly feasilble to download say a the complete "hitchhikers guide to the galaxy" over a 9600 modem as long as you choose the book version. Try doing the same thing with the TV series and you will be spending a few months online.
The radio play will probably take you a few days.
Oh intresting side note perhaps. The book is widely available, the tv series not, and the radio play you can just about forget about. (I am talking normal stores here, no internet crap)
You think? This is IBM the company that did computers before anyone knew what computers were.
Exactly why do you think early pc clones where labeled "IBM Compatibles"? Sure they made some slips in that market mostly because they failed to see the huge potential of the humble PC. Compared to mainframes at the time pc's where very very humble indeed. Hell in some ways they still are.
The bit about four vs four seems to be spot on and shows that just because you are a billion dollar gorilla you can still have a sense of humor.
Now if only the big blue ape would go into highgear and do the bit where sco goes splat. this is like a mosquito in youre bedroom that just keeps buzzing. It is going to get splattered but damn is it annoying until you do.
Does it really matter? If I go into a race with say Micheal Schumacher and he finished the lap in 1.32 and I finish in 1.34 then I have lost to him but can still give myself a pat on the back for coming so close to the worlds fastests driver.
If I come in say 30 then I am still in the same place. I don't that then I deserve a pat on the back. I am then a complete and total loser. In a real sense there was no race.
If you compare the sales of X-box/Gamecube with the PS2 then yes they are in second and third place. The distance between the winner however is so great that there really is no contest. Coming second in a two horse race means you finished last.
You say forget the console hardware race, just make games their games for the other platforms so they can maximise the potential of their great games without the hassle of having to compete with two giants with deep pockets?
Then perhaps focus their hardware into the one area they are the supreme almighty ruler, the handheld gaming market? Perhaps make the next gameboy a truly excellent piece of engineering and marketing without such obvious ommissions as a backlight or a headphone jacket?
Perhaps realize that a fair proportion of gameboy owners are adults and make more adult type games for it?
Put a technology like bluetooth on it with easy matchmaking capabilty?
Extend the battery life by realising adults can hold a heavier device then a 8yr old and can pay more for both hardware and software?
Realize that the iPod has shown their are plenty of rich bastards out there who are willing to pay top dollar for true excellence? (archos is way way way way cheaper and offers the same base product)
That is crazy talk mister.

Walk-thru Fog Screen
·
· Score: 2, Insightful
Well the fog now is shaped by air being blown down. You could in theory use finely controlled airflows to keep the fog in a certain shape. It would not be totally dissimmilar(?) to how a glass blower shapes glass. Of course glass is a lot more solid then fog:)
For now probably only very simple shapes would be possible, like say a pyramid. Then again maybe with multiple projectors you can create the illusion of something being inside the fog?
Then again you can bet your ass that the engineers at places like disney will be researching this very very thoroughly. So who knows.
Not really, most technologies used to display things are used to advertise something. A flashing redlight on a car for instances advertises that this car is an ambulance. I fail to see anything disturbing in that.;)
Anyway there is indeed probably no immidiate hightech use for this. I imagined something like a screen in an operating room to give the surgeon information, but without blocking movement like a normal screen would. You know put the screen over the chest if the surgeon is working on the head, but then if the patient goes into arrest he can work on the chest without loosing a single second in removing a regular screen.
Answer, there isn't one, and there isn't going to be one. The reason, well you pretty much mentioned it youreselve. The two commercial desktop makers each have their own codec they want to sell, with the MS being sorta "free" just as long as you buy it with their OS, and the Quicktime codec being free but reall jobs wanting you to pay for it.
A bit of an outsider is Realplayer. Since it A runs on all major OSes, it doesn't have an OS to leverage users into accepting it as the default and C its player is hated by everyone.
So the best bet for someone like you? Multiple encodings if you got the space. Or link to the codecs for mac, ms and linux users. Remember it is all about service. See it as what flash does. If youre flash carrying page is loaded on a machine without flash installed it will instead link to a place from wich the flash codec can be installed. Why not do the same for video?
Oh and flash can be used as a sorta wrapper for video, so if people got the latest flash installed, they can play youre flash embedded movie anywhere.
I hope this is a case of "Preview before you post" or else you are one of the most extreme liberaterians I ever saw.
what right does anybody else have to tell them what they can and cannot say, do, smoke, eat, drink when it does affect other people.
With the DO bit you seem to say that people should be free to kill, rape, mutilate other people since no one should be allowed to say they shouldn't.
So I really really hope you meant to say
"what right does anybody else have to tell them what they can and cannot say, do, smoke, eat, drink when it doesn't affect other people.
This sentence is significantly different. It could for instance be used to outlaw smoking in public but not in private areas or areas that are setup for that purpose. It can be used to allow people to have whatever sexual preference just along as it is between consenting adults. IE freedom but responsible freedom.
Youre statement wich I think very few people would agree with would create anarachy.
Actually the bit about cities being designed around it is not that strange a notion. In holland where we the bicycle is used far more then it seems to be in the US, there is a city called Almere. It is a new city build in reclaimed land. During its initial layout it was decided to seperate car and bicycle traffic with the shortest routes being given to the bicycle and often the right of way as well.
It worked very well, if you were a cyclist as me it sure as hell beat the standard approach of just try to fit in between the parked cars and speeding cars.
Of course it is hated by all the car drivers who want to park their cars 1 meter from the front door even though they choose to live in a city designed around bikes.
Just because most cities are now designed around the car doesn't mean there isn't room for communities designed around smaller forms of transport.
Erhm well I think they are just about going to far with this. TIVO is a Philips product, the company that dared go against the RIAA in defending the CD standard from being deluted.
Also Sony is closely involved with tivo (as a dutch person of course the sony involvement is negliclble and of no importance). Perhaps now SCO is really going to be stepping on some major toes here. Not just a bunch of powerless geeks. IBM is hardly threatened so far after all, to them all this is just one of the many many IP battles they have fought in the past wich they can easily just let it run its course with no adverse affect on their bottom line.
I am sorry, I hope I am misunderstanding you but are you saying because something allows some people to make a living it should be allowed regardless of what effect it has on others?
Perhaps you wanna make it illegal to throw trash into wastebaskets? After all throwing it on the pavement means it has to be cleaned up by someone who can then support his family.
I can think of a thousand more examples each more insane then the other if youre logic is applied.
Okay given that, a big reason for voter apathy is often that people can't see any difference between the candidates. Until someone shows me the program or I get a report of it from a real cop, I won't believe it. Sounds to much like those temporary insanity pleas.
